When the defeated Democratic nominee took the stage, some onlookers noticed the choice of color for her outfit — purple.

Clinton wore a regal charcoal suit with purple lapels and a matching purple shirt, while husband Bill Clinton matched her with a purple tie.

The color purple has several various meanings, especially in the Catholic Church. But it could also mean bipartisanship, as that is the reason purple is used to denote swing states.

“The colors violet or purple in Advent help us to remember that we are preparing for the coming of Christ. Lent, the season of penance, repentance, and renewal, also uses the colors violet or purple,” noted the Archdiocese of Boston website. The Christian Resource Institute noted, “Purple can symbolize pain, suffering, and therefore mourning and penitence. It is the liturgical color for the Season of Lent.”

In the Methodist tradition, of which Hillary Clinton comes, purple represents both royalty and penitence. That is why she is wearing it. As Boston Globe writer Matt Viser pointed out, the more likely meaning, since Clinton is a Methodist, was to symbolize royalty and contrition.

CNN journalist and commentator Carl Bernstein called the image of both Clintons wearing matching purple was ““a tableaux of the Clintons and the best of what they stand for.”

Clinton has frequently chosen symbolic colors during her presidential campaign. When she accepted the Democratic nomination, the former first lady wore suffragette white in order to honor the history of America’s women’s rights movement.

During Donald Trump’s acceptance speech early Wednesday morning, the businessman-turned-outsider-politician called for unity among Americans. Clinton echoed that message just a few hours later.

“We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought, but I still believe in America and I always will,” she said. “If you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”
