Brazilian Peppertree May Pack Power to Knock Out Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria Fri, 02/10/2017 - 9:48am by Emory Health Sciences The red berries of the Brazilian peppertree -- a weedy, invasive species common in Florida -- contain an extract with the power to disarm dangerous antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria, scientists at Emory University have discovered. The journal Scientific Reports is publishing the finding, made in the lab of Cassandra Quave, an assistant professor in Emory's Center for the Study of Human Health and in the School of Medicine's Department of Dermatology. "Traditional healers in the Amazon have used the Brazilian peppertree for…

In recent years, astronauts have reported their vision changing as a result of long-duration spaceflight. Pre- and post-flight studies of astronauts’ eyes showed flattening along the backside of the eyeball, and scientists hypothesized that the redistribution of body fluids that occurs in microgravity could be reshaping astronauts’ eyes by increasing the intracranial pressure in their skulls. A new study tested this hypothesis with the first-ever measurements of intracranial pressure during microgravity flights and during extended microgravity simulation (a.k.a. bedrest with one’s head pointed downward). The authors found that humans here on Earth experience substantial…

neurosciencestuff: Where is My Mind? New Study Looks for the Cortical Conscious Network Our brain is a very complex network, with approximately 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses between the neurons. In order to cope with its enormous complexity, and understand how the brain works and eventually forms our conscious mind, science uses advanced mathematical tools. Ultimately, scientists seek to understand how a global phenomenon such as consciousness can emerge from our neuronal network. A team of Bar-Ilan University physicists, led by Prof. Shlomo Havlin and Prof. Reuven Cohen, used network theory in order to cope with this complexity and to determin…

Salmonella seeks out oxygen-poor regions in the body (cancer tissue), combine that with a protein that causes a strong immune response and… The researchers found that their genetically modified salmonella made its way to several organs in the bodies of mice and also into tumors. The immune system then successfully eradicated the bacteria from the organs while simultaneously attacking the bacteria in the tumors and by extension the tumors themselves. This approach proved successful—11 out of 20 mice were tumor free after 12 days. (via) Via

Myopia cell discovered in retina: Dysfunction of cell may be linked to amount of time a child spends indoors

Date: February 6, 2017 Source: Northwestern University Summary: Scientists have discovered a cell in the retina that may cause myopia when it dysfunctions. The dysfunction may be linked to the amount of time a child spends indoors and away from natural light. This discovery could lead to a new therapeutic target to control myopia. More than a billion people in the world have myopia, whose incidence is rising and is linked to how much time people spend indoors as children. Cells in the eye could be over stimulated by indoor light spectrum, causing damage, say researchers. Credit: © artush / Fotolia "This discovery could lead to …

Photo: Tara Moore/Getty Images Sure, your weekday may be on the quieter side — especially if you spend the better part of the day typing away in a cubicle, using Slack instead of your voice to communicate with other people — but how often do you experience true, honest-to-goodness silence? Not nearly often enough, as it turns out. According to a CDC report released earlier today and highlighted by the Washington Post, our lives are way, way too noisy — noisy enough, in fact, that a disconcertingly high number of Americans are losing their hearing way before old age. The report analyzed data from the 2011–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey…
