by Guest Nicole- 0 replies

Barley can be added into soups, stews, salads, served as a side dish, and now used as a way to lower appetite and improve overall health. Researchers from Lund University in Sweden examined the impacts barley-rich bread could have on improving a person’s risk for heart disease and diabetes. Their findings, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, reveals barley's ability to “rapidly improve people’s health.” Researchers focused on a blend of bread that contained 85 percent barley kernels, which had been boiled and mixed together with wheat flour. They asked a group of 20 healthy, middle-aged participants to eat the barley-rich bread at breakfast, lunch, and din…

Is chocolate good or bad for health?

(CNN)Who doesn't love chocolate? Even if it's not your favorite sweet treat, you can probably agree that the confection conjures thoughts of love, pleasure and reward. But in case you need one more reason (or 10) to celebrate chocolate, just look to science. Studies of chocolate lovers -- and even some self-proclaimed "chocoholics" -- suggest that it could lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, help control blood sugar and slash stress. The list goes on. Research has even backed up some of the more bizarre health benefits that have been ascribed to cocoa. The Mayans used chocolate powder to relieve the runs, and in the last decade, research…

Christianity and the Use of Blood
by Guest Kurt- 0 replies

Jehovah is undoubtedly the Supreme Owner of all things. As Owner he has placed certain things within man’s prerogative, sometimes under certain conditions, such as withholding something for Himself. (Genesis 1:29; 2:16, 17; Psalm 115:16) Scriptures consistently teach that blood is a sacred substance, and one that he has withheld for Himself. (Genesis 9:3-6; Leviticus 17:11, 14; Acts 15:19, 20; cf. Ezekiel 18:4) It is important that we first understand the sacredness of blood and the fact that it is regarded as God’s property, for all other considerations must fall under those two guiding principles. “Abstain from Blood” – Noachian? Jewish? Christian? Or all of the abov…

To Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer’s, Eat Fish
by Guest Nicole- 1 reply

Eating seafood is linked to a reduced risk of dementia-associated brain changes in people who carry the ApoE4 gene variation, which increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Eating seafood was not linked to similar changes in those who carried other forms of the ApoE gene. The study, published in JAMA, looked at 286 autopsied brains and also found that eating seafood was linked to increased mercury in the brain, but that mercury levels were not linked to brain abnormalities. After controlling for age, sex, education and other factors, the researchers found that compared with those who ate less seafood, ApoE4 carriers who had one seafood meal or more a week had…

A brand new all terrain 4WD military vehicle has been unveiled that can drive on water, snow, swamp, snow, ice and land. Four-wheel drive, 4×4 ("four by four"), 4WD, and AWD is a form of drivetrain capable of providing power to all wheel ends of a two-axled vehicle simultaneously. It may be full-time, or on-demand, and may be linked via a transfer case to provide multiple gear ranges.A four-wheeled vehicle with power supplied to both axles may be described as "all-wheel drive". However, not all "four-wheel drive" vehicles are "all-wheel drive", as vehicles with more than two axles may also be described as "four-wheel drive" regardless of how many axles, so long as two axl…

Here’s some scary news about seafood: Most of us are not eating nearly enough of it. A whopping 80 to 90 percent of Americans do not get the recommended minimum of 8 ounces weekly, according to a recent USDA analysis. That means the vast majority of us are not reaping seafood’s health benefits and are probably worse off for it. Eating fish dramatically reduces the chances of dying of a heart attack, improves children’s brain development, slows brain aging, lowers the risk of depression and mood disorders, can help with weight management and more. Then there are seafood’s culinary attributes — it’s one of the quickest-cooking proteins, there is an incredible variety to cho…

As the mosquito-borne Zira virus monopolizes the attention of Brazil's government and media, adding to the burden of the dengue epidemic, researchers are offering a method to blood banks that wish to screen transfusion blood for pregnant women and in cases of intrauterine transfusion. There is a suspicion that Zika could cause foeatuses to develop microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with small heads and brains. The initiative is led by São Paulo's blood bank Fundação Pró-Sangue/Hemocentro, with support from the research foundation Fapesp. Headed by molecular biologist José Eduardo Levi, it is making available a method that uses real-time polymerase cha…
