As widely reported yesterday, SpaceX and Elon Musk have confirmed that the launch of BulgariaSat-1, initially scheduled for June 19, is being realigned to Friday or Saturday to allow SpaceX to replace a leaking valve inside the payload fairing. Musk reiterated that the second redundant valve was functioning perfectly, but tempered that fact with an abundance of caution. BulgariaSat-1 was initially scheduled to launch on June 17th, but was delayed while the pad continued to be prepared after the launch of CRS-11 fourteen days earlier. With a public acknowledgement that SpaceX is even willing to consider two launches within 48 hours, let alone officially schedule …

Tesla CTO JB Straubel spoke at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Annual Energy Fair over the weekend and shared a summary of Tesla’s progress to date. To put the scale of Model 3 into perspective, he shared that “the Model 3 alone, when it’s at half a million vehicles per year, will use the world’s entire lithium ion battery supply.” The clarification builds on previous statements by Tesla CEO Elon Musk several years ago that the Gigafactory would produce more lithium ion cells than the entire world’s capacity at the time. The statement by Straubel provides an updated perspective on the scale Tesla is pursuing with Model 3 and with the Gigafactory. It a…

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed today with a tweet that Tesla has no plans to use its new 2170 lithium ion cell in the Model S and X. The news flies in the face of past assumptions that Tesla would convert all of its vehicles to the new cells being produced at Gigafactory 1 in Nevada. The new 2170 cells were designed from the ground up to be the optimal size and energy density for electric vehicles, balancing energy storage with external surface area to allow for sufficient cooling. Why maintain two battery standards? Tesla has partnered with Panasonic for its batteries since the beginning, and as such has existing contracts with the company that may come …

JB Straubel, Tesla’s co-founder and chief technical officer, was the keynote speaker at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Annual Energy Fair which took place this weekend in Wisconsin. While there, he dropped a few hints about an array of Tesla’s projects. One of these nuggets is that the technology for its existing vehicles is going to be upped to the level of the Tesla Semi, which is being unveiled in September. “It may not be intuitive to everyone, but the same technology that’s in the Model S can be scaled up,” Straubel said. “In fact you can just kind of double it and double it again, you can scale it to vehicles that are much much bigger.” …

Tesla has scored a victory in Arizona after a judge ruled that an existing law believed to prohibit auto manufacturers from selling direct to customers did not apply to Tesla. Tesla pursued and obtained an automotive dealer license – a standard license traditional automotive dealerships are required to hold in order to sell vehicles – from the Arizona Department of Transportation following the ruling. Tesla previously believed that a supporting law prohibited direct sales to customers even with the dealer license so the clarification from the judge that direct sales would be allowed with a run of the mill automotive dealer license came as quite a relief. The vic…

Elon Musk tweeted that progress is being made with securing political support for The Boring company after ‘promising conversations with @MayorOfLA (Eric Garcetti) regarding tunnel network’. Gaining support of leading political figures, especially from Los Angeles city Mayor Eric Garcetti, would set a high water mark for the upstart company and stimulate laggard cities that might not otherwise be as supportive of the proposed underground transportation network. Musk shared a video at TED2017 demonstrating his plan to create a multi-layer high-speed tunnel infrastructure to support mobility by way of electric skates and Hyperloop tubes. The serial tech entr…

tJust a little over three months ago, in mid March, fans of SpaceX caught their first full glimpses of a mysterious robot aboard the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY) while it was docked in Port Canaveral, Florida. Rapidly deemed “Roomba” and later heard to be internally nicknamed “Optimus Prime”, it was approximately 50 feet (15 meters) across at its widest point and appeared to be extremely heavy due to the way it was handled on the side of the docks, as well as the presence of tracks rather than wheels. The SpaceX community quickly came to the conclusion that it was some sort of robotic tool for remotely securing Falcon 9 first stages following landin…

Australian transmission operator Transgrid has announced that it will install a 250 kilowatt, 500 kilowatt hour Powerpack installation in New South Wales to better manageme fluctuating energy demand and prevent blackouts. Transgrid operates the high voltage electricity transmission backbone for NSW and the ACT which connects the generators, distributors and large scale consumers of power. It is looking to energy storage as a means to smooth power spikes caused by renewables like solar which at the grid level, creates a spike in generation at midday that does not always correspond to usage. Unlike fossil fuel fired generation which can be throttled up or down as neede…

Assistant Attorney General Rock Wood, who represented the legislators, told Judge Ellen Carmody Thursday that courts generally only lift the veil of internal communications for criminal cases and for civil cases involving voting rights and redistricting, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. “There would be no reason to make an exception for the Tesla lawsuit,” Wood said. Wood went on to say that if Carmody allows access to lawmakers’ records in such a case, there will be a raft of lawsuits aimed at harassing and intimidating lawmakers to the extent that “legislators are spending all their time on this, and can’t legislate,” Wood said. Tesla attorney John …

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 “1029” is nearly ready to conduct its second commercial launch later this weekend after today’s successful static fire at Launch Complex 39A. Static fire was initially planned for June 13th but was delayed to the 14th and then the 15th, with the launch date also being delayed by two days to June 19th. This small delay is likely a result of launch pad readiness procedures taking a bit longer than intended. Now scheduled with a window of 2-5 p.m. EST on June 19th, a successful launch will mark the second successful reuse of a Falcon 9 first stage and thus the second ever reuse of an orbital-class rocket. This particular first stage, 1029, is coinciden…

Apple is joining the self-driving car race, but may need the help of a certain Elon Musk-owned marquee EV brand to do it. As NextMobility recently reported, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the tech behemoth is working on the “mother” of all AI for autonomous vehicles. While Apple has technological know-how, it is behind competitors Uber, Tesla and Waymo in terms of having access to real-world driving data. In a note sent out to clients, Adam Jonas, an analyst at financial research firm Morgan Stanley, recommended that Apple explore a partnership or an acquisition of Tesla, according to Markets Insider. Tesla has accumulated billions of miles of driving da…

Elon Musk has published a lengthy dissertation detailing his vision for making humans a multi-planetary species in the online publishing house Liebert Pub. Musk notes that the first step to accomplishing life outside of Earth, which he envisions to be Mars, is to establish reliable space transportation to and from the red planet. Once that building block is in place, work to establish a colony on the planet can commence. To understand the process, we have to rewind the tape back to the underlying motivation behind Mars. Why do we need a colony of humans living on Mars? Musk believes, as does the greater scientific community, that if humanity remains on Earth, it…

Elon Musk has said many times that his ultimate goal is to increase the adoption of electric vehicles, a goal that’s advanced with every EV that rolls off a dealer’s lot, even if it’s not a Tesla. “The biggest impact that Tesla will have is not the cars that we make ourselves, but the fact that we show that you can make compelling electric cars that people want to buy,” he said in Revenge of the Electric Car. When it comes to making compelling electric cars, the company has succeeded spectacularly. But when it comes to inspiring the industry leaders to sell their own EVs in substantial numbers, that isn’t happening. Spokesmen for the major automakers (especially when…

A new analysis by Ben Sullins of Teslanomics has Model 3 deliveries pegged at roughly 83,000 cars delivered in 2017. The bold prediction was derived from a series of statements made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk around Model 3 production ramp, guidance from Tesla’s First Quarter results, and historic data outlining production capacity for the Fremont factory. To ground Teslanomic’s estimate in a bit of reality, Ben analyzed the production capacity of Tesla’s Fremont factory back when it was known as the NUMMI plant. NUMMI was a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors that had a total production capacity of approximately 500,000 vehicles per year. Admittedly, the fac…

Elon Musk confirmed via Twitter Wednesday that Tesla is in active discussions with the Indian government over the possibility of entering the local market with sales and manufacturing. When asked by one of his 9 million plus Twitter followers on whether Tesla’s plan to enter the Indian market has been postponed, Musk replied “In discussions with the government of India requesting temporary relief on import penalties/restrictions until a local factory is built”. Apparently, Tesla is in negotiations with Indian officials to work out a deal that would allow the manufacturer to bring its vehicles into the country without facing the steep penalties and restrictions that a…

Tesla revealed in early May that it had begun collecting short video clips from the cameras found on Model S and Model X vehicles that are equipped with the Autopilot 2.0 hardware suite. The announcement was made through an over-the-air software update, and ahead of the recent ‘smooth as silk’ Autopilot update, that prompted drivers with a new Data Sharing policy. “We are working hard to improve autonomous safety features and make self-driving a reality for you as soon as possible.” read the firmware notes. “In order to do so, we need to collect short video clips using the car’s external cameras to learn how to recognize things like lane lines, street signs and traff…

Graphic artist Jan Peisert of Peisert Design dreamed up his own interpretation of the Model Y, after Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the first teaser image of the electric compact SUV at the company’s recent 2017 Annual Shareholder meeting. Peisert built upon Tesla’s shadowy Model Y rendering using Photoshop. Referencing a photo of a silver Model 3, the digital artist seemingly invokes magic through a sequence of Photoshop tweaks and tricks that merged a Model X’s flared stance and Model 3’s front fascia before arriving at a beautiful rendition of a Model Y. And it was all captured in a time-lapse video we embedded below. Peisert was not willing to evolve along wit…

This story was originally published on EVANNEX. Renowned mutual fund manager and investment icon Ron Baron of Baron Capital is well-known for his conservative, long-term approach to stock picking. He’s been compared to Warren Buffett (both for his investing style and outstanding track record) and has said that Tesla “may be the most interesting” company he’s ever invested in over his 46 year career. Yesterday, CNBC interviewed Baron for his views on Tesla [NASDAQ: TSLA]. What is his forecast for the stock? “I think it is going to be about $500 to $600 next year, and I think it is going to be $1,000 in 2020.” At that time, Baron said, he expects the company to ha…

This story first appeared on NextMobility.co Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed to Bloomberg News that the Cupertino-based technology giant is interested in entering the race for self-driving cars. Cook has previously been very quiet on Apple’s exploration into vehicle technology, but recently revealed his plans for the company to add focus to autonomous vehicles. Apple initially began development of an electric vehicle in 2014, but shuttered the program after reportedly realizing how difficult it would be to scale manufacturing of cars. Apple SVP Steve Kenner wrote a letter to the NHTSA last December, revealing the company’s interest in autonomous vehicle technology. Kenne…

HBO’s Vice News unpacked details behind Tesla Energy’s recent installation of a huge solar energy plant on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Similar to the Tesla-SolarCity microgrid built on the island of Ta’u, the sustainable energy system at Kauai’s combines the use a 52 megawatt-hour commercial Tesla Powerpack 2 battery system with a 13 megawatt solar farm. Hawaii was an early adopter in clean technology due to the unfavorable energy costs at the island state. It currently relies on fossil fuels to produce 90% of its energy, while importing 100% of that energy. This means the state imports $5-6 billion per year in energy, driving the cost of household island living up sev…

A new set of Tesla Model 3 images made its way into Imgur today via the Tesla subreddit, this time giving us a glimpse at Model 3’s folding rear seats. Photos of the gorgeous blue Model 3 were reportedly taken from Tesla’s Fremont Warehouse located off of Kato Road and 1.5 mi (2.5 km) from the company’s main factory in Fremont, California. Looking at the photos, one can make out what appears to be a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat configuration similar to what’s found in the Model S and Model X. Two latches can be identified on the vehicle’s rear deck which is presumably used for the rear seats. Photo credit: almosttan Tesla recently revealed through a side-by-s…

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is taking a leave of absence from the company amid a slew of controversy over allegations of workplace misconduct that has seemingly decimated the ride-hailing giant. CNBC reports that Kalanick will leave the company to mourn the loss of his mother who was recently killed in a tragic boating accident. Kalanick will be relieved from some of his duties by an independent chair. It had been a rough year for the embattled CEO as the company recently fired over 20 employees and is investigating over 50 more in a string of sexual harassment and sexism charges. Kalanick also made headlines for dropping prices during the highly charged taxi boycott at …

Germany-based Berenberg has upgraded Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) to a ‘Buy’ rating from ‘Hold’, citing the Elon Musk-led electric car maker has a ‘near-monopolistic opportunity’ and won’t face mass-market EV competition from traditional manufacturers. The firm also raised Tesla’s price forecast from $193 to $464, representing a near 30% rally from Monday’s close. Berenberg’s Alexander Haissl explains in a note to clients sent Monday that big automakers looking to enter the electric vehicle space have ‘no clear pathway to high-volume EV production’, as they face a steep uphill battle against Silicon Valley-based Tesla. First deliveries of Tesla’s mass market Model 3 that’s seen a…

First crash test videos showing a Tesla Model X undergoing a series of violent crashes have been published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The crash tests consisting of a head on collision, a side crash, and one that simulates a side impact against a pole, highlights Tesla’s impressive safety-first design of the vehicle. Like the Model S, Model X boasts spacious front and rear crumple zones that absorb crash energy and protect occupants from harm. The vehicle’s floor-mounted battery keeps the Model X’s center of gravity extremely low to the ground, making a rollover near impossible. The crash test videos also show the effectiveness of Model…
