Following a highly informative discussion at the ISS R&D conference, Elon Musk revealed that the updated, leaner version of SpaceX’s Mars architecture would likely have a diameter of around 9 meters. Possibly the most crucial keystone of this economical update relates to the launch pad or pads that will be necessary to launch a rocket as large as either ITS. An oft-overlooked feature of the current LC-39A launch pad SpaceX leases and operates in Florida is that it and its LC-39B sibling were developed with a far larger and more powerful version of Saturn V in mind, known as Nova at the time. SpaceX is well aware of this, and is also painfully aware of just how ex…

Just as quickly as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg went from casual acquaintances to full-on foes, 2017 is more than halfway over. Tesla had a lot of lofty goals for the year, and made some big moves like the release of the Model 3, but there are still a few ideas brewing that Musk would like to execute by year’s end. Anticipated Model 3 Release Source: Tesla As mentioned above, the Tesla Model 3 graced the world with its presence this year, and its rollout is in two days at a company handover party. As we previously reported, production is expected to kick into a higher gear and Musk’s processes and logistics will be tested following the off…

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Instagram late Tuesday evening to demonstrate The Boring Company’s newest car elevator. The serial tech entrepreneur posted a video showing what appears to be a driverless Tesla Model S being summoned onto a platform, before being lowered into an underground tunnel. This is the first time we’re seeing a working proof of concept by The Boring Company, which comes less than three months after Musk first revealed details about his futuristic tunnel-boring project. Speaking at TED 2017 in April, Musk gave the audience a visualization of the project that would enable a car to be lowered into the ground, and transported on electric skates throug…

An update yesterday on NASA’s Commercial Crew Program has confirmed SpaceX’s current schedule for its first launches of Dragon 2 in February and June of 2018. Previously discussed here, meetings on Monday and Tuesday offered more detailed information on SpaceX’s Dragon programs. In Monday’s NASA advisory meeting, Sam Scimemi discussed ISS operations between now and the end of the year, and went on to discuss SpaceX’s upcoming CRS-12 mission. Currently slated for no earlier than August 14th, CRS-12 will mark the final “new” Dragon capsule to visit the ISS, with all future CRS-1 launches from SpaceX to be conducted with reused capsules. Including CRS-12, SpaceX has nine mo…

After so much waiting it is finally here – the week of the deliveries of the very first Tesla Model 3 vehicles! Whether you waited in line to plunk down a deposit on March 31, 2016 hours before a prototype was unveiled or recently got caught up in the madness, it’s hard to deny just how hooked some of us are on the Model 3. Pretty amazing for a car that isn’t technically for sale yet and that many of us will not see in this calendar year. Here’s how you know you’re a little bit of a fanatic: You have waited what feels like forever for this final reveal, and now that it’s almost here can’t focus on anything else You wake up knowing how many days are left until th…

The Tesla Model S has been restored as the top-rated ultra-luxury sedan by Consumer Reports after the Silicon Valley-based electric car maker released a software update that increased its automatic emergency braking (AEB) upper limit to 90 mph. The Model S and Model X SUV were both downgraded in April because vehicles produced after October 2016 did not include AEB at highway speeds as part of the “standard” package. Consumer Reports said that it “awards extra points to the overall score to vehicles that provide automatic braking as a standard feature across all trims,” due to the feature’s tested ability to prevent accidents. The difference between models built…

BMW challenging Tesla with major EV strategy: “All brands and model series can be electrified”

BMW group has joined the likes of Tesla and Volvo in bringing more EVs to the world’s streets. The company announced that all brands and model series can be electrified, and will offer a full-electric or hybrid plug-in drivetrain as an option to internal combustion engine vehicles. The company predicts that electrified vehicles will account for 15 to 25 percent of its sales by 2025, according to a company press release. The announcement by BMW is a signal that international car manufacturers are reacting to the EV movement spurred by companies like Tesla. Volvo announced earlier this month that it’s aiming to have 1 million EVs on the road by 2025, and Volkswa…

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has constructed a pedestrian bridge to knock down on the number of traffic collisions near its Hawthorne, California, headquarters. The SpaceX bridge comes six months after two traffic collisions injured company workers in a crosswalk from the SpaceX HQ to its parking garage, according to The Daily Breeze. The prefabricated pedestrian bridge will link the two structures. Railing and siding will be added to the bridge skeleton over the next few weeks. It was erected over the weekend by two cranes, about three stories above Crenshaw Boulevard. Crossing guards will direct traffic in the bustling business corridor around-the-clock as construction conti…

New photos of Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 taken Monday, July 24 and obtained by Teslarati reveal continued expansion taking place on the north end of the massive battery facility outside of Reno, Nevada. To date, Tesla has accrued over $1 billion in construction costs which include construction projects on a new “Section G” that adjoins the main building. When complete, Tesla’s massive factory is expected to cost upwards of $5 billion and support close to 10,000 jobs, up from a previous estimate of 6,500 jobs. CEO Elon Musk recently said when speaking at the National Governors Association 2017 Summer Meeting that Tesla looks to build two, if not three, more Gigafactories in…

Just days before Tesla releases official details for Model 3, including battery pack sizes and their respective driving range, a new rumor has emerged pointing to a new “4416” lithium ion battery cell being produced by the Silicon Valley-based electric car maker. The news comes to us from Ben Sullins at Teslanomics who received an insider tip that Tesla has produced a significantly larger cylindrical battery cell that’s roughly 44mm in diameter and 160mm in height, also known as a 44160 cell, that’s currently being used in the Model 3 battery pack. The new information goes against previous speculation that Tesla will be using it’s newest high energy density 2170 cell…

Tesla will be discontinuing the Model S 75 with rear wheel drive. A Tesla spokesperson confirmed with Teslarati that the company would begin phasing out its only remaining real wheel drive option, though no firm date has been set. The decision to discontinue the Model S 75, named after its rear wheel drive capabilities and 75kWh battery pack, comes ahead of Tesla’s highly anticipated Model 3 launch and seen as a move to differentiate the company’s flagship Model S sedan from its high-volume, affordable electric sedan. The Model 3 delivery event is scheduled for Friday and based on information obtained from inside sources, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is expected to reveal a 6…

Elon Musk is looking to add more people to his Neuralink team so that he can expedite the connection of human brains and computers. Musk’s Neuralink, which develops “ultra high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces,” has a bevy of full-time positions open at its San Francisco headquarters. “No neuroscience experience is required: talent and drive matter far more. We expect most of our team to come from other areas and industries,” the homepage of the Neuralink website says. “We are primarily looking for evidence of exceptional ability and a track record of building things that work.” Neuralink is filling the following positions: Electrical Engineer (Robotics), Hardware …

With the Tesla Model 3 delivery event just days away, Tesla fans everywhere are gearing up for the final roll out of Tesla’s high volume, affordable EV. Amid the excitement, however, Tesla shares have seen a mercurial run on the market in recent weeks. With many investors betting on Tesla’s future — and many more skeptical buyers shorting it — the Model 3 release will be nothing short of a rubber-meets-the-road moment for CEO Elon Musk and his grand automotive ideas. The biggest uncertainty that faces Tesla is its projected production ramp-up. Musk will hand over 30 Model 3s at the delivery event on Friday. From there, production will increase exponentially until ro…

Ask any Tesla Model 3 reservation holder and they’ll probably tell you how beautiful their future vehicle will be — the sleek exterior, the space-age console and display screen, the unique door handles. But as the Model 3 release party nears, there’s something far less sexy on the docket, albeit still of the utmost importance: car insurance. Tesla’s VP of Global Investor Relations Jeff Evanson said in February that Tesla will be looking to provide a seamless, all-in-one insurance policy for drivers. Tesla currently offers this option to Model S and X drivers in Asia. “We’ve been doing it quietly, but in Asia in particular where we started this, now the majority…

A new video posted by a Kawazaki Ninja sport bike owner under the YouTube channel BreakingMoto reveals yet another run-in with a Tesla Model S. Having learned the hard way just 1-year prior that Tesla always wins, the sport bike owner engages in a seemingly random street battle against another Tesla for a second chance at victory. This time, the biker is back with a larger and tuned 1000cc 2010 ZX10R, upgraded from a race-ready 2008 ZX6R that proved useless when it came to out drag racing a previous generation “Classic” Model S with nose cone. However, there’s just one problem. Their choice encounter with the Tesla this time around proved to be with a Ludicrous-enabl…

Just one tap on your phone could summon a Tesla right to your house as you enjoy your morning coffee. Not a morning person? Don’t worry about needing to make small talk with your driver—this car is driving itself. Take your coffee with you, hop in, and travel in comfort and style wherever you want to go. All that, and your trip costs less than a bus ticket. That is the future according to Elon Musk with his proposed autonomous ride-sharing “Tesla Network.” Of course, questions of insurance, liability, and use all depend on states giving permission to Tesla and others to use widespread self-driving technology first. Only a few states have any semblance of laws guiding…

Tesla’s Senior Vice President of Engineering Doug Field was recently spotted at the Fremont factory driving off in a gorgeous midnight silver Model 3 with serial number 003. However, it isn’t the sighting of Tesla’s third production Model 3, likely belonging to Field himself, that people are talking about – the first Model 3 off the production line was gifted to CEO Elon Musk – rather it’s the sighting of a Tesla-branded “key card”, leading keen-eyed observers to question whether Tesla will forego their ubiquitous key fob in favor of a simple card. Field, a VP at Apple prior to joining Tesla, can be heard commenting about Tesla’s customer base in a new video posted t…

NASA has released tentative flight schedules for the first Commercial Crew Program missions of Boeing and SpaceX, aligning with recent suggestions that SpaceX’s schedule had slipped by several months. SpaceX’s first Commercial Crew mission, an uncrewed inaugural test of Dragon 2, has moved from late 2017 into early 2018, and is now targeting a launch no earlier than February. Throughout the discussion, Elon Musk frequently and wholeheartedly praised NASA for enabling SpaceX to exist and to remain the agile aerospace company it wants to be while still working as a private partner of the agency. It is indeed exceptional that NASA’s CRS team has allowed SpaceX to upgrad…

Reports have surfaced that two more automotive companies are interested in purchasing Lucid Motors. While the two companies have yet to be named, the interest comes in the wake of Series D funding talks with Ford, according to Recode. Though there’s been no confirmation from Lucid or Ford on the reported talks with one another, a spokesperson for Lucid told Teslarati earlier this week that fundraising has been a “process (that) is going well.” New reports suggest that as Lucid considers other interest, fundraising offers of up to $200 million are on the table. Despite the news, Ford is still very interested in acquiring the company, as CEO Jim Hackett and o…

According to The Planetary Society, SpaceX is planning to launch Falcon Heavy for the second or third time as early as April 30th, 2018. This information was given directly to The Planetary Society by “Air Force officials”, and the timeliness suggests that it is relatively recent. This bodes well for what has been an anticipated launch date of Falcon Heavy’s inaugural launch, which has been described several times by SpaceX executives as likely to occur by the end of 2017. Musk made headlines by strongly cautioning audience members at his recent ISS R&D Conference in Washington D.C. that there was “a real possibility” that Falcon Heavy would fail at some poi…

Two Tesla Model 3s have been spotted and Tesla fans are roaring about two things: a spacious back seat and the 7th production vehicle off the line. Photos surfaced early Thursday morning on Reddit of the midnight silver Model 3 and one in blue, the same color as the one we first spotted in April. A photo of the vehicle’s temporary registration ID affixed to the lower right corner of the windshield reveals the VIN. Using the Model 3 VIN decoder, we see that 5YJ3E1EABHF000007 is Tesla’s 7th production car built in its Fremont factory. Rumors earlier this week were also sparked after a fan found a vehicle that could have been Elon Musk’s SN1 personal Model …

In response to journalist Jeff Foust of SpaceNews, Elon Musk replied on Twitter that SpaceX chose to cut development of propulsive landing for Dragon 2, and thus Red Dragon, in order to jump directly into propulsively landing “a vastly bigger ship” on Mars. SpaceX had previously delayed Red Dragon to 2020, which happens to be the same year a tentative schedule from the Guadalajara presentation pegged SpaceX’s first attempt at sending ITS to Mars. With approximately 30 months between now and 2020, there is almost no chance SpaceX could mature Raptor and develop an entirely new, massive launch vehicle and spacecraft in time for the 2020 launch window. Musk…

Rumors swirled early Tuesday morning after a series of Model 3 photos rumored to be Elon Musk’s personal first production “SN1” vehicle were captured at Tesla’s Palo Alto headquarters. US Air Force veteran Jeff Meinke, and Teslarati app user who goes by “Crush”, submitted detailed pictures of the Model 3 interior, including a close-up look at the never-before-seen mounting point for the center display. In speaking with Jeff and asking him why he didn’t take a photo of the Model 3 VIN, which would have surely confirmed whether the vehicle was Musk’s personal car with a 0001 trailing serial number, he tells us that it was just a matter of nerves and he wasn’t thinking a…

ISS R&D 2017 – Washington D.C. Answering questions from audience members, serial tech entrepreneur Elon Musk validated a large number of SpaceX rumors by confirming that the company’s Mars update at the International Astronautical Congress in late September would demonstrate a leaner architecture. Musk noted that the team has aimed partially at improving the economic viability of the vehicle, making it more applicable and useful for Earth orbit activities. This would involve downsizing the booster and spaceship, although Musk quickly added that it would be “a little bit smaller, but still big”. Video of Dragon 2 hover test from SpaceX Musk also confirmed rumors t…

Speaking at the ISS R&D 2017 conference in Washington D.C. Wednesday, SpaceX Founder and CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company plans to be able to recover and reuse a Falcon 9 first stage in as little as 24 hours by 2018. The company also hopes to finish its development of fairing recovery by the end of this year. With a dozen launches scheduled for the rest of 2017, SpaceX will have quite an array of attempts to hone its rocket recovery and reuse skills. Tesla has lost a top solar executive. Peter Rive, a SolarCity co-founder, will be leaving Tesla in search of other opportunities following the company’s purchase of the solar company. The departure comes just eight months after Tesla purchased SolarCity for $2.6 billion in a move that Elon Musk pegged as integrating solar operations to drive the Palo Alto-based vehicle company toward its goals for a sustainable future. His decision to leave was also motivated in part “to spend more time exploring the outdoors, more time with my family, and helping non-profit solar projects in the developing world.” With Rive gone, more questions surround Tesla’s solar roof develo…

Robert Lightfoot, the current Acting Director of NASA, began the third day of ISS R&D with a rousing keynote on the roles of NASA and the ISS in the future of public and private space exploration. ISS R&D’s keynote venue. (Teslarati/Eric Ralph) Lightfoot began the timely statement that those creating new platforms often completely fail to fully predict how those platforms will eventually be used. The ISS is a prime example, with an array of commercial endeavors having come into existence for reasons that were undoubtedly less than prominent in discussions of the use of the ISS around the time it was be theorized and later constructed. Lightfoot actively ask…
