Tesla has begun sending emails to Referral Program winners who referred 7 or more qualifying Model S/X sales, notifying them that a personal invitation to attend the Model 3 delivery event will be coming as early as this week. “For reaching 7 referrals, you qualify to receive an invitation for yourself and a guest to attend our Model 3 delivery event. An email containing more information will arrive in the coming week.” read the email sent by Tesla last Friday, July 7. Though Musk confirmed that initial Model 3 production units would be single motor rear-wheel drive vehicles, it wouldn’t be unexpected if he also touched on future variants, including the dual mot…

A Tesla service video released Tuesday announced that the company will roll out a fleet of 350 additional service vans by the end of the year, bringing the number up from the roughly 30 it has now. The goal is to be able to offer repairs whether a customer is at home, work or on the side of the road. The EV titan will also add 100 new service centers and 1,400 new service technicians, the addition of 100 facilities will bring the total number up to just over 250 service centers worldwide. Tesla customers have been concerned about long wait times for service — an issue that is documented on Tesla forum posts. The company is looking to eliminate those wa…

The Buffalo News reported that Tesla has committed to bring nearly 3,000 jobs to the Buffalo area, and the joint venture with Panasonic is the latest step toward making good on that promise. According to CEO Elon Musk, buyers in California could see the tile…

Elon Musk has regained the rights to X.com, according to a Tweet sent last night by the serial tech entrepreneur who founded X in 1999 and later renamed to PayPal in 2001. Holding Tesla, Tesla Energy, SpaceX, The Boring Company, OpenAI and Neuralink in one spot would be a good way for the companies to be managed under a centralized resource, and makes more sense than dropping at least seven figures for the sake of nostalgia. This article first appeared on: Lucid Air just hit the astonishingly high speed of 235 mph during its latest round of testing. Lucid previously fitted one of its prototypes with a roll cage to prep for a series of high-speed tests intended to explore the limits of the platform. The prototype, the Lucid Air Alpha Speed Car, was first tested in April 2017. The car was given aerodynamic aids and a parachute for the initial tests to slow the car abruptly in case the straights didn’t prove long enough to reach desired speeds and slow down for the following turns. For this first test, the top speed was software limited to 217 mph, with the driver exiti…

The Wall Street Journal released updated data yesterday on how the elimination of Hong Kong’s vehicle-registration tax waiver for electrics impacted Tesla sales, and the results weren’t stellar. Data analysis from the publication shows that zero new Tesla Model S sedans and Model X SUVs were registered with the Hong Kong transport department in April after the tax break was discontinued at the start of that month. In May, five electric cars were registered for the whole month. Tesla sales boomed before the April 1 rule change, with 2,939 Tesla vehicles registered in March, making for a total of nearly 3,700 for the first quarter of 2017. The end of the tax …

We haven’t seen a Tesla drag racing video in quite some time so needless to say we were pleasantly surprised when we across a new video by Florida-based DragTimes that showcases their Ludicrous+ Model S P100D against a heavily modified, 1,000 horsepower turbocharged Toyota Supra. It comes as no surprise by now that even the world’s quickest supercars will fail when it comes to beating Tesla’s flagship Model S in a heads up drag race. But how does the Tesla fare against brute horsepower from a turbocharged beast equipped with racing slicks? Tesla’s technologically advanced electric drivetrain provides instantaneous response with unparalleled traction, as we recen…

As solar energy expands its presence in the United States, traditional utility companies are citing homeowner affordability and freeloading in their fight against the alternative option. According to the New York Times, solar installations declined 2 percent this year, the victim of saturated markets, financial issues at top manufacturers and a targeted lobbying effort from traditional power companies. In states like Indiana, where solar markets are just being established, lobbying efforts are making some lawmakers rethink just how beneficial solar energy is for their state’s overall power outlook. Lobbyists argue that because utility companies no longer ha…

Three launches, two recoveries, two coasts Just over two weeks ago, SpaceX accomplished its most impressive feat of cadence yet, both launching and recovering two separate Falcon 9s in approximately 49 hours. Two weeks later and two days after conducting a third launch in 13 days, residents of Los Angeles, California and Cape Canaveral, Florida both coincidentally reported that the two recovered boosters from the previous two launches had both gone horizontal and appeared ready for transport. After docking in Port Canaveral for the second time, Core 1029 was seen entering SpaceX’s LC-39A integration facilities on Friday. The booster on the West coast, 1036, was l…

Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave the world a glimpse of the first Model 3 production car over the weekend when he tweeted photos of the gorgeous electric sedan in black. One of the photos showed the Model 3 set in front of the large Tesla logo at the company’s Fremont, California factory and Supercharger site. A video would soon follow, posted by TehBestGamer505 to YouTube, showing Musk’s serial number 1 Model 3 getting positioned for its first official photo shoot. Finally, at the 1:32 minute marker of the video, the Model 3 driver can be seen pushing on the skinny front portion of the aerodynamic door handle to unlatch the door. Tesla has completed the first production build of the Model 3, according to a tweet by CEO Elon Musk. The announcement comes less than a week after Musk revealed that production of the highly anticipated electric car was two weeks ahead of schedule and the first “SN1”, or serial number 1 car, would be completed on Friday, July 7. The serial tech entrepreneur also revealed in Saturday’s tweet that venture capitalist and Tesla board member Ira Ehrenpreis holds rights to own the first Model 3 off the production line. However, Musk noted that Ehrenpreis gifted his rights to own the exclusive serial number 1 car to Musk for his 46th birthday. Musk owns the first productio…

With Model 3 production set to kick off today, devout Tesla fans got a rare glimpse on Instagram at a space-aged production line in the company’s Fremont factory. The photos feature what appear to be what CEO Elon Musk has referred to as “alien dreadnaught” for assembly peeking out from under canvas tarps. The photos appeared on Instagram after an attendee of Tesla’s most recent invite-only “VIP Factory Tour” managed to snap a quick shot of the Model 3 production line. The robots are noted for their range of flexible abilities that include switching adapters and moving across multiple axes, a needed departure from the traditional stamp-and-repeat robots used b…

It is already known that Elon Musk is a big name in the tech world, but he has another, equally rabid fanbase: millennials. Forbes contributor Deep Patel poses the following question: “We’ve all seen people in the past get famous by throwing millions of dollars at publicity and marketing, but that’s not Musk’s approach. His success is organic, which begs the questions: how did he get here and why do people, especially millennials, believe in him so much?” Patel lays out the reasons why it’s easy for Musk to appeal to the younger generation, namely, Musk’s eye for the future, a desire for the common good and playing off emotions. In terms of the future, Musk…

Elon Musk joined a doomsday discussion yesterday saying Earth’s population problems could push us to our ultimate demise. Theorists have long pontificated on the possibility of a global meltdown that would stem from environmental impact, food shortages or even human violence. Regardless of the reason, Musk has made it his own personal goal to find sustainable options for future human existence. His companies Tesla and SpaceX, and their mission to provide an optimistic future for energy consumptions and human-beings, reflect that. Musk’s latest tweet is not out of character — the space-age CEO has been known to talk at length about Earth’s bleak fu…

Need to type up a quick memo before work? Forgot to eat breakfast before driving to school? In just a few years, driving may be a more hands-off endeavor than ever before if companies like Tesla, Uber, Volvo, Alphabet, General Motors, or Ford have anything to do about it. You could be a passenger in your own self-driving car, weaving in and out of traffic with ease and parallel parking like a pro every time. It seems like most every company even tangentially related to cars is pouring money into the race for autonomy. The freedom of self-driving cars is still heavily dependent on regulatory whim and technological availability, but some are setting demanding goals in …

Tesla has secured a contract to install the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage system in South Australia. Premier Jay Weatherill has announced an agreement between the State Government and California-based Tesla to install a 100-megawatt (129 megawatt hour) Powerpack system to be paired with a wind farm by global renewable energy provider Neoen’s Hornsdale. The battery system will operate continuously and charge using renewable energy from the wind farm, and ultimately serve as back-up power in the event of energy instability from local utilities. “Tesla Powerpack will charge using renewable energy from the Hornsdale Wind Farm and then deliver electricity du…

Gene Munster, Loup Ventures cofounder, has equated the Model 3’s potential impact on the automotive industry to the iPhone’s effect on technology. He said the Model 3 will “advance us to a new paradigm in transportation, car ownership, ride hailing, city development and energy usage,” according to TheStreet. Munster also went as far as to compare Tesla to Amazon in an interview with CNBC, saying the core mission of Tesla will drive it through the current turbulence. He cited how skeptics underestimated Amazon when it was a mere book website, missing the grand vision of the company that allowed it and Jeff Bezos to become major players in the tech and sales indu…

France may be saying au revoir to the traditional internal combustion engine, as the country has announced that it will ban all gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040, according to the Telegraph. The announcement came during a press conference with Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot, and is largely reflective of President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to make France a leader in reducing the globe’s carbon footprint — a stance he so eloquently referred as an effort to “make the planet great again.” The French will offer its citizens financial incentives as a way to encourage the movement away from fossil fuel cars and toward clean energy. “The solutions are …

After hitting all-time highs late last month, Tesla shares have plummeted 18 percent as of Thursday’s market open, due to a perfect storm of sales concerns, competition and the safety of its cars. The EV titan’s stock was down 3 percent at the opening bell on Thursday, bringing losses for the week to 12 percent. A number of Wall Street firms have expressed doubt over Tesla’s sales, with Goldman Sachs analyst David Tamberrino leading the charge yesterday after he lowered his six-month price target for Tesla to $180 from $190, a 49 percent downside from Monday’s close. Tamberrino cited a slower sales growth and doubts over meeting lofty production goals as th…

Serial tech entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has had a longstanding fear of artificial intelligence, but his company’s investments in artificial intelligence have been noted as an attempt to keep track of developments in the field of AI. In an interview for Vanity Fair in April 2017, he outright expressed his concerns with AI and claimed that one of the reasons for the development of SpaceX was that it could be an interplanetary escape route for humanity if artificial intelligence goes rogue. However, even Musk realizes the importance of AI in real-world applications, specifically for self-driving cars. At the end of June, Musk hired Andrej Karpathy as the new Directo…

Tesla’s 2017 Model S has missed the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) top-safety pick+ rating, citing issues with the small overlap front test. Tesla had made changes to the vehicle in January to fix issues in this area, but the IIHS’s test results show otherwise. “Tesla made changes to the safety belt in vehicles built after January with the intent of reducing the dummy’s forward movement,” IIHS said in a statement today. “However, when IIHS tested the modified Model S, the same problem occurred, and the rating didn’t change.” The small overlap front test is meant to simulate crashes into trees, poles, and other vehicles. With the launch of Intelsat 35e just minutes ago, SpaceX has completed their third successful launch in just under two weeks. The last mission SpaceX has scheduled for the rest of July, Intelsat 35e is also the largest geostationary payload the company has yet to launch, weighing in a bit less than 6,800 kilograms. This required an expendable Falcon 9, meaning that the vehicle did not have the legs and grid fins characteristic of SpaceX’s reusability efforts. After two automated aborts on Sunday and Monday, SpaceX stood down an attempt on July 4th out of an abundance of caution, and the launch team instead conducted a full review of the vehicle and pad systems late last …

At a crowded Fremont Factory meeting, female employees shared stories of sexual harassment, mistreatment by male managers, unfair promotion decisions and more, sources told The Guardian. One of the women there was AJ Vandermeyden, the female engineer who sued the company for pervasive harassment and pay discrimination. Shortly after this town hall took place, Vandermeyden was fired. “They just want to absolutely crush anyone who speaks up,” Vandermeyden told the news outlet. “I spoke up, and I was made a sacrificial lamb for it. It’s a scary precedent.” Tesla has rejected Vandermeyden’s claims, saying she was terminated for “falsely attacking our company in the press…

More than 70 electric vehicle charging ports will be added in rural Western Australia in a move that’s aimed at providing drivers with more options to refuel while cruising down the coast, according to WAToday. Robert Dean and his partner Robin made a 13-day, 5,400 kilometer (3,356 mile) trip from Perth to Broome in their 2015 Tesla Model S. They stopped every 400 kilometers (249 miles) to recharge on their journey, which they made before the charging port announcement. “People were saying, ‘You can’t do that!,’ but I knew we could,” Rob told RAC. “It became a challenge to prove we could and I thought we could actually do it quite easily.” The journey is a major bl…

Tesla had a big holiday weekend with Elon Musk announcing that the first Model 3 will roll off the production line this Friday, but this news was not enough to persuade finance giants like Goldman Sachs that the dollar signs in everyone’s eyes would translate to gains for shareholders Goldman Sachs analyst David Tamberrino lowered his six-month price target for Tesla to $180 from $190, representing 49 percent downside from Monday’s close, according to CNBC. Tamberrino cites a slower sales growth and doubts over meeting lofty production goals as the reasoning behind his downgrading. “We remain sell rated on shares of TSLA where we see potential for downside as the Mod…
