NEW YORK—Two video news releases featured in the Newsroom section of jw.org were recognized at the 36th Annual Telly Awards. News Update: Jehovah’s Witnesses Moving Forward and Stanley Theater Renovation each won a 2015 Bronze Telly Award in the “Online Video News Feature” category.

News Update: Jehovah’s Witnesses Moving Forward reported on the Witnesses’ October 2, 2013, sale of a five-building complex in Brooklyn, New York, to RFR and Kushner Companies, part of the eventual move of their world headquarters from Brooklyn to Warwick, New York. The video news release featured excerpts from an interview with Jared Kushner, chief executive officer of Kushner Companies. Commenting on working with the Witnesses, Mr. Kushner stated: “A handshake means something with the Witnesses. It’s much easier to transact with a group where there’s a high level of trust.”

Stanley Theater Renovationdocumented the Witnesses’ six-month renovation of the historic Stanley Theater in Jersey City, New Jersey, which reopened on April 13, 2013. This video news release featured comments from Witnesses who traveled at their own expense and volunteered to work on the project. It also featured comments from Richard Polton, an architectural historian and author, who spoke on the historical significance of the building and the Witnesses’ meticulous preservation of the building’s character. “This was one of the premiere theaters in the New York metropolitan area,” Mr. Polton stated. He also described the theater’s renovation by Jehovah’s Witnesses as “a heartening example of what can be done with one of the great buildings by an organization that’s really committed to use it and use it to the maximum without destroying its architectural character.”

Both videos are available for download from the Newsroom section of jw.org, which features news releases and video news items as official information resources to assist media and academic professionals.

The Telly Awards were founded in 1979 to honor outstanding television commercials and programs, video and film productions, and web videos and films. The field for 2015 was made up of over 12,000 qualifying entries produced between 2013 and 2015. “The Telly Awards has a mission to honor the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, executive director of the Telly Awards. “The Witnesses’ accomplishment in the jw.org Newsroom illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.”

It appears like the Telly Awards are set up to promote and publicize the producers of the work. This award that JWorg "won" as a result of entering the competition, is actually an advertising scheme.

This is humorous. The statuettes that JWorg is displaying on their website along with the amazing win article, would have been purchased by the Watchtower. Lol!

Designed by the same firm that makes the Oscar® and Emmy®, the Telly statuette is nearly 12 inches tall and weighs more than 4 1/2 pounds. Winners that wish to commemorate their achievement will have the opportunity to purchase a winner's package, which includes one statuette and one commemorative certificate. If you wish to honor other members of your team, your client, or anyone else involved in your award-winning entry, additional statuettes and certificates are available.

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.”—Matthew 6:1-2

The practice of using donated funds from Jehovah’s Witnesses to purchase a very high probability of “winning” an award is not new for the Watchtower organization. Since at least 2002, Watchtower has amassed a collection of certificates and statues, the result of dozens of submissions to numerous for-profit organizations, bypassing legitimate and critical sources of acclaim.

Located just outside the Brooklyn, New York office of senior Governing Body aide Robert Wallen stands a bookcase featuring a plethora of Telly and Aurora certificates and statues, purchased over a 14+ year period. A glass wall is all that separates this display from tens of thousands of Jehovah’s Witness tourists who pilgrimage to Brooklyn Heights each year.

The next best thing to having actually won an Emmy award is apparently having someone think you won that award.  For a few witty entrepreneurs, a golden opportunity emerged.

According to its website, the Telly Awards was founded in 1978 and “is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online commercials, video and films.”

[NOTE:  – in their press release package, Telly declares 1979 as the date of their founding instead of 1978]

Combining a website with a shopping cart, clever marketing campaigns and a contract with the same manufacturer who produces the Oscar and Emmy statuettes, Telly zeroed in on an untapped market of emerging video creators who would jump at the chance to showcase a trophy which bears a striking resemblance to the Emmy statue.

Official Emmy Award
How does it work? When Watchtower produces a video or online news release, it uploads the video or URL to Telly using a web submission form, paying for this opportunity according to the number of entries and categories chosen. Per the Telly website: “The Telly Awards Final Entry Fee is $105 (U.S dollars) for single entries and $190 (U.S Dollars) for campaign entries.”

After the published “deadline” for entries, Telly contacts the “contestant” and advises them that they have won, in most cases, either a silver or bronze award. Once notified, the organization must cough up $210 U.S. for the trophy, which weighs approximately 4.5 pounds, one half the weight of an Oscar. You would think that a frame-able certificate would come with your victory, but sadly, this too is for sale – for $45.00.

So dear Brother Jay and Sister Ann are you telling me that we have been duped here? That even humble 'ol me could garner myself a Telly Award if I pay the $$$ and fill in the application and submit a something and I will get a little statuette thingamy ??

But this is disgusting !

And why I am aggrieved greatly is because a most recent issue of our beloved magazines carried an article promoting the fact that our Organisation had won some esteemed highly recognised Telly award !

[Ok I was a little taken-a-back by the very fact that the brothers appeared to be self-promoting here and of course we never do anything out of egotism and pride but they are after all only human and are not prone to prideful and presumptuous acts EVER! ]

I will have to ask my fellow elders about this matter and perhaps even write to the local branch as this is most disturbing.

Are you sure this is just not the work of the mentally diseased brothers?? Trying to discredit our beloved Faithful and Discreet brothers??

Well, whoever put the article on the jwdotorg must have had the GB's OK and today it still headlines the Newsroom section, so you tell me.  ;)

I have subsequently re-read the post and have also Googled it and you are so right - Everyone who pays the $$$ will get an award regardless of the technical merits of the production!

But this is so unlike our brothers to do such a thing !

I am definitely talking this up with my elders !
