(New news ....)  A MONTANA Judge Orders Jehovah’s Witnesses to Turn Over Internal Documents Related to Childhood Sexual Abuse
      April 12, 2018

On April 5, 2018, Judge James Manley of Sanders County, Montana ordered the Jehovah’s Witnesses religious organization to produce documents and testimony related to internal reports and investigations into the childhood sexual abuse of NPR’s two clients.

In this case, the two Plaintiffs were sexually abused as children by a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Elders in the local Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Thompson Falls, Montana were aware of the abuse and failed to report it to the police, choosing instead to handle the reports and investigations internally pursuant to Jehovah’s Witness guidelines. Their decision not to report the abuse to authorities allowed the perpetrator to remain in the congregation and continue to abuse one of the Plaintiffs.

Throughout this case, and similar childhood sexual abuse cases across the country, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have refused to produce documents related to their internal handling of reports of sexual abuse and related investigations and disciplinary actions claiming that the information is protected by the clergy-penitent privilege and the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Through briefing to the court, NPR convinced the Judge that Defendants’ privilege claims were unsupported and improper under the law. The Court agreed that Defendants could not blanket everything related to their investigations in secrecy and that they must turn it over to the Plaintiffs. Often, this is the very evidence that can win or lose a case like this against a religious institution.

The case of Nunez, et al. v. Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of New York, et al.  is set to go to trial in September of 2018.
The plaintiffs in this case are represented by NPR partner D. Neil Smith and associate Ross E. Leonoudakis.

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur – The civilian reportedly killed by New PeopleÂ’s Army (NPA) in Surigao del Norte on Wednesday could never be a military spy because his religion prohibited him from participating in any government or other politically-related efforts, the military said Thursday.
Jepti Acido, 32, was an elder of the JehovahÂ’s Witness, according to Capt. Francisco Garello, the civil military operation officer of the ArmyÂ’s 36thInfantry Battalion.
“This is another failed operation of the NPA, which only shows how poor their intelligence gathering network is,” Garello said.
JehovahÂ’s Witnesses church members were prohibited to participate in any political undertaking.
Acido was riding a motorcycle with two other church members when fired at by alleged NPA members in Barangay Lahi in Gigaquit town in Surigao del Norte on Wednesday.
Acido died from a bullet wound in the face while his companions, Virgil Flor Ortiz, 23; and Abner Malaque, 20, sustained gunshot wounds on their legs.
Lieutenant Colonel Xerxes Trinidad, the 36thIB commander, said the attack was condemnable and showed that the rebels were not sincere in resuming the talks.
“We vehemently condemn these treacherous attacks to the civilians by the CPP-NPA. These actions manifest their true intentions of deception and how to resolve conflict in Mindanao,” Trinidad said.
“The attack was made to sow fear and force the community not to support government peace initiatives. I am calling on all peace loving people of the said community to include the entire municipality of Gigaquit, let us stand together and condemn these barbaric actions of the NPAs,” he added.

The previously posted WT letter of December 15, 2017 "Re: 2017 Service Year Report" was for the US congregations.
The second (and third) paragraphs of the letter are being re-written to feature highlights in the local field to the congregations that it is addressed to...
Hence below is what I understand to be the version of the above letter that is being sent and read out (in the first week of January 2018) to congregations in the Philippines.
I believe that the Philippines is traditionally one of the WT's Star Performers in terms of growth
I have bolded the key text in the letter:

      For comparision with previous years:
      Year Population Peak.Pubs Ratio Av.Pubs %Increase Baptized 2015 100,621,100 201,761 499 199,551 5 10,146 2016 100,981,437 209,131 483 202,431 1 8,900 2017   210,914     3 10,781 .
      Year Av.AuxPios Av.Pios Congs Hours Studies Memorial.Att 2015 12,440 38,813 3,246 49,798,859 268,598 576,542 2016 9,801 41,182 3,315 50,130,621 269,655 584,685 2017   45,264   52,443,544   575,813 .
A 3% increase would indicate that Average Publisher is expected to be between 207,492 and 209,515 (ie between 2.5% to 3.5% as the yearbooks only used whole numbers for the %'s)
The Regular Pioneer figure is a Peak - though I would expect the Average Regular Pioneers during the year to be fairly even, with no real spiked peaks.

Philippines to make enthusiastic singing of national anthem mandatory
27 June 2017 From the section
Hello guest! Please register or sign in (it's free) to view the hidden content.
The Philippine House of Representatives has approved a bill making enthusiastic singing of the national anthem compulsory.
"The singing shall be mandatory and must be done with fervour," the bill states. The word "mandatory" is not in the existing legislation.
It also provides official music for the tune, which must be adhered to.
Punishment for breaking the rules could include a fine of 50,000-100,000 pesos (£780-£1,560; $2,800-$5,590).
That fine is substantially more than the current minimum and maximum of 5,000-20,000 pesos (£78-£312).
