"Peace, Can It Last?" Audio lecture given September 20, 1942 by Nathan H. Knorr at a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Knorr had been elected President of the Watchtower Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) earlier that year succeeding J.F. Rutherford. Noting statements by leaders of the Allied countries regarding the creation of the United Nations as a successor to the defunct League of Nations, Knorr predicts "that the religious organization with headquarters at Vatican City, will ride and exercise guiding influence over the League beast." Knorr further states "it is time for the nations to take note that religion's ambition, under the lead of the Vatican's Hierarchy, to dominate the earth is but the demons' idea and purpose to tighten control of this earth and its people and thereby hold control of all in opposition to Jehovah God and in denial of His universal domination!" Knorr concludes with a prediction that the post-war peace will be very short: "Once again we ask the leading question, PEACE — Can It Last? and God's definite answer is, No! Man-made peace under religion's 'blessing' will be very short-lived, and political kings and rulers will not long enjoy it. The record says they 'receive power as kings ONE HOUR with the beast'. 'One hour,' with God, denotes a very brief time; and suddenly those ten horns and the beast will go into perdition, not peacefully, but violently, at the battle of Armageddon." PDF copy of lecture can also be downloaded.

This is a very old public talk by Brother Nathan H Knorr in the middle of WW2 when Hitler was winning the war in 1942. This is the talk that was referred to in the September 15th Watchtower, study edition 2012, page 29 par 7. It was given at a convention of JWs in Ohio USA by Bro Knorr on September 20 1942.

This Talk in 1942 identified the wild beast of Revelation Chapter 17 as the yet to come United Nations which appeared in 1945, 3 years after this talk was given. It has very interesting thoughts on the destruction of religion at the hands of the United Nations and that WW2 was NOT going to end with Armageddon (like many thought it would) because there was yet a time of relative peace to come in which a great preaching work was yet to be done. This talk shows that the Jehovah's witnesses knew what was yet in the future after 1942 as regards the appearance of the UN and the destruction of all religion at the hands of the UN which is yet still in the near future.

THIS TALK PROVES ONCE AND FOR ALL TIME THAT THE JEHOVAHS WITNESSES HAVE NEVER HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE UNITED NATIONS AS YOU CAN SEE FROM LISTENING TO THE TALK FROM 28 MIN ONWARDS.

This talk also shows that the Jehovahs witnesses were expecting Germany and Hitler to lose the war even though they were winning the war when this speech was given in 1942.

Anyone know the location?

For the picture with the dog, my guess would be Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, since that's where Travelers Field was. Also, it says Little Rock, Ark., right under Travelers Field. (And one of the signs in the background says "Arkansas Carpet and Furniture" which existed in Little Rock, AK., at either 6th and Main, or 709-715 Main St. in Little Rock.)

but surely anachronistic?

Nah! The dog was clearly born, and named, far back into the time of the previous leadership, which had ended only a few months prior.

However, this dog's previously sired pups on the other hand, all being hot little dogs, half-Beagle, half Dachshund, were named "

    Hello guest!
" and "
    Hello guest!
" and "
    Hello guest!
." Nathan stuck close to his "Pappy," although Frank and Ernest were found jumping the fence to
    Hello guest!
(in Layman's terms) having previously been raised in the "House of the Rising Sun" with some Russell Terriers.*

[Sadly, Rutherford's phonograph players were sold to Berlitz.]

[This doctrine was later changed to "The World Will End When The King of the North and the King of the South Try to Get Even."]

*Perhaps the Librarian will not notice that this post has gone just a wee bit off topic.

Well well, @JW Insider, now you're going all JTR on me!!

Sorry about that. Sometimes he inspires me!

Some more trivialities:

The "Frank and Ernest" comic strip actually has billed itself as the "Hot Dog Comic Strip" because of a long-running hot dog theme, and these, of course, have nothing to do with the Watchtower's old radio show on WBBR called "Frank and Ernest." But it is true that this radio show moved over from the Watchtower's Bible Students to "Dawn Publishing" in 1928 or so where it kept going, to become one of the longest running radio shows ever.

Two close friends are walking side by side in a beautiful valley, with tears in their eyes. Struggling to find the right words to describe this moment, they continue walking in silence and in awe. The sun is shining down on them like never before and the mountains are teeming with gorgeous waterfalls and trees. They go up on a rolling hill and flashbacks begin to run through their heads: Their trials, their endurance - Their life in the old system. Stunned by the scene surrounding them, they come to a halt when they reach the top and they witness so many animals roaming together, free at last. A little girl is walking down the road with a cute little monkey on her shoulder and the roar of a silverback gorilla from a nearby forest greets their ears, astonishing them. The smells of nature reaches their nose and not too far away from them, their friends and loved ones are gathering in a park, in the most beautiful nature scenery they have ever seen in their lives. They remain silent but you can hear them sniffling, with tears racing down their cheeks. Finally they embrace in a tearful hug and with so much emotion they exclaim the words they had been yearning to say for so long: "Remember when we used to talk about this! We made it home." To everyone who reads this: Don't give up, I hope we run into each other in paradise someday. I hope we laugh and cry and say that we finally made it after enduring for so long. I hope we have the most amazing bonfires and we share our own stories of what we went through in this system. I hope we hang out in a tree house by the ocean and we watch the dolphins and whales leap out of the water under the twinkling stars. I hope we meet Abraham, Noah, Moses, David, Esther and we have the most thrilling, conversations with them! I hope we witness the long awaited resurrection and we cry so many happy tears until we run out of tears. And I hope.. We build a lasting bond, serving the true God for millions of years and all of eternity. Until then, let's continue to endure - And if we do - I hope to see you on the other side. We are almost home!

      "The Golden Rule"
“All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must likewise do to them.” (Matthew 7:12)
YES, the Originator of what Jesus taught, including what came to be known as the Golden Rule, is the one who sent Jesus, namely, the Creator, Jehovah God.
God originally purposed that all mankind treat one another as they would like to be treated. He set the finest example in expressing care for the welfare of others in the way he created humans: “God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
This means that God lovingly endowed humans with a measure of his own outstanding qualities so that they could enjoy life in peace, happiness, and harmony—potentially forever. Their God-given conscience, when properly trained, would guide them to treat others the way they themselves would want to be treated.

Can You Find Peace in This Troubled World?
So where can you find real peace? The source of peace is our Creator, Jehovah God. Why? He is the “God who gives peace.” (Romans 15:33)
Under the rule of his Kingdom that is soon to come, there will be an “abundance of peace.” (Psalm 72:7; Matthew 6:9, 10)
This is far more than just a feeble peace settlement. Such accords often herald little more than a brief interruption in hostilities.
But God’s peace will eliminate all causes of war and strife. In fact, no one will learn war anymore. (Psalm 46:8, 9) Real peace for all at last!
Yes, you can find inner peace. It comes from Jehovah God, who gives it to those who draw close to him and who want to follow his guidance.
By an examination of his Word, the Bible, you can become familiar with his thoughts. Applying his directions is not necessarily easy. But it is worth all the effort because “the God of peace will be with you.”—Philippians 4:9.

Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.

Can You Find Peace in This Troubled World?
Many people yearn for inner peace. They may search for it in religion, meditation seminars, or yoga groups. Others hope to find peace in nature—taking vacation trips, hiking in mountains and wilderness areas, or visiting natural spas.
Even if the searchers seem to find some inner peace, they may soon come to realize that such peace is superficial and short-lived.
So where can you find real peace? The source of peace is our Creator, Jehovah God. Why? He is the “God who gives peace.” (Romans 15:33) Under the rule of his Kingdom that is soon to come, there will be an “abundance of peace.” (Psalm 72:7; Matthew 6:9, 10)

Real peace for all at last!
If we sincerely repent of our sins and ask for forgiveness on the basis of Jesus’ sacrifice, God will extend forgiveness, which contributes to our peace of mind and heart. (Acts 3:19)
When we realize that life cannot be enjoyed to its fullest extent until the coming of Christ’s Kingdom, we avoid frantically living as if this life is all there is. (1 Timothy 6:19)
Of course, we are not spared all trouble, but we can find comfort in the sure hope that the best life is yet to come.

Very soon, peace will prevail between humans and animals.
6 "The wolf will reside for a while with the lamb,
And with the young goat the leopard will lie down,
      And the calf and the lion and the fattened animal will all be together;
And a little boy will lead them.
7  The cow and the bear will feed together,
And their young will lie down together.
The lion will eat straw like the bull.
8 The nursing child will play over the lair of a cobra,And a weaned child will put his hand over the den of a poisonous snake.
9 They will not cause any harm
Or any ruin in all my holy mountain,
Because the earth will certainly be filled with the knowledge of Jehovah
As the waters cover the sea."

THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT GOD WILL DO AMAZING THINGS ON THE EARTH.
People will no longer feel pain, grow old, or die.—Revelation 21:4
“The lame will leap like the deer.”—Isaiah 35:6
“The eyes of the blind will be opened.”—Isaiah 35:5
The dead will be brought back to life.—John 5:28, 29
No one will get sick.—Isaiah 33:24
Everyone on earth will have plenty to eat.—Psalm 72:16.                          The Bible does more than that. It tells us what we need to know in order to be truly happy and enjoy life right now. Think for a moment about the things that make you worry. These may include money or family matters, bad health, or the death of someone you love. The Bible can help you to cope with these problems, and it can comfort you by answering such questions as these:
      Why do we suffer?
How can we cope with our problems?
      Can our family be happy?
What happens to us when we die?
Will we ever see our dead loved ones again?
Why can we be confident that God will do everything that he has promised? Go to JW.Org to learn these answers.
