In the area around the Jewish community of Ma'ale Michmash and the Arab village of Michmas are several ancient sites dated to the Bronze and Iron age. A great battle between the Philistines and the Israelites was fought in the fields of Michmash during the reign of King Saul. A late Iron age fortress was excavated in the northern side of Ma'ale Michmash, seen in this photo.
