Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the suspicious death of a man in Honiton today [6 June].

Police and ambulance crews were called at around 3.40pm after concerns were raised for the welfare of the man at a premises in Dowell Street.

On arrival they found the man, who is yet to be identified, deceased at the scene. He had sustained a number of stab wounds.

A 55-year-old man was located nearby and has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He has been taken into custody in Exeter awaiting questioning.

Detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances of the man’s death.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have information which may assist with the enquiry to contact them.

A cordon remains in place around the scene while a forensic examination is carried out by scenes of crime officers.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by telephoning 101, quoting log 529 of 06/06/17.

Police have arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of murder in Honiton after a man was found dead with stab wounds.

The investigation into the 55-year-old’s death began after he was found at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Dowell Street. at around 3.40pm.

Police and ambulance crews found the man dead on arrival with a number of stab wounds. His family has been informed.

A 55-year-old man was located nearby and has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A large number of detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team are working on this investigation to establish the circumstances of the man’s death.

Officers are carrying out an extensive search of the vicinity where this incident took place and the police drone will be used to capture footage of the surrounding area.

A police cordon is in place and scenes of crime officers remained at the scene overnight.

Superintendent Sam De Reya said: “I want to reassure the local community of Honiton that this was an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

“We are appealing for witnesses. If anyone saw anyone acting suspiciously in the Dowell Street area or around a camper van parked in the Lace Walk car park in the town centre on Tuesday afternoon, then we would like you to contact us.”

Philip Ryan, from Westward Ho! was found dead in Honiton and a man has been charged with his murder.

Philip Ryan, described as a ‘gentle and loving husband’, from Westward Ho! was found dead in Honiton on Tuesday and police have charged a man with his murder.

A Westward Ho! man has been named as the victim of a fatal stabbing in Honition on Tuesday.

Philip Ryan, 55, was found dead at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Dowell Street, Honiton.

Keith Beviss, 54, from Honiton, was arrested later that day and was last night charged with the murder of Mr Ryan.

Mr Ryan’s family have released a short statement paying tribute to him.

It reads: “Philip was a very kind, gentle and loving husband who will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.

“We are in a state of shock. There aren’t any words to describe our pain.”

They thanked the Jehovah’s witness community for their support and asked for privacy at this time.

Mr Beviss is due to appear at Exeter Magistrates’ Court this morning (Thursday).

The Jehovah's Witnesses have confirmed he was an elder in their community.

A spokesman for the group said: “We are deeply saddened at the tragic loss of Philip Ryan, who was for many years an active member of his local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, family and close friends. It is our hope that they will find comfort in their faith and in the support of their fellow worshippers and local community."

Mr Ryan owned Ryan Alarms and Electrical Services based in Westward Ho!

Keith Beviss, 54, appeared in court on Thursday morning charged with his murder.

Henry Brown, deputy mayor, of Honiton said: “I am completely horrified and astounded by what has happened, especially as police are investigating whether it was a hate crime. People I have spoken to about it are shocked and taken aback. People normally feel very safe in our community if they are walking around in the day or night.
