I wonder if that is what Americans said about Germany during the period of time between World War 1 and World War II

Life Magazine at the time had some interesting perspectives on that.

Pictures of an American woman in the States holding a Japanese soldier's skull in her hand for a photo as if it was an animal skull.

The general population at the time considered the Japanese far worse than the Nazis.

There could never be a Japanese version of "Hogan's Heros" with a Sgt. Schulz, and Col. Klink.

Turns out they are seriously planning on defending Taiwan / US from Chinese aggression.

"Rising from the ashes" might be true after all.
