  2. As @BillyTheKid46 has pointed out, the term "governing body" had been used prior to 1971, and it was usually used in the sense that certain types of corporations used the term. In fact, for the Watchtower Society it was usually used to refer to the "legal" leadership of Jehovah's Witnesses through the legal entity of the Society itself. This is why there was such a difference in the way the term was used in the 1960's and even right up until 1970, the year before the change in meaning that the Watchtower Society gave to this term. For example, the 1970 Yearbook said very clearly: *** yb70 p. 65 1970 Yearbook of Jehovah’s Witnesses *** So really the governing body of Jehovah’s witnesses is the board of directors of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, all of whom are dedicated to Jehovah God and anointed by his holy spirit. Technically, then it was the 7 members of the board of directors, not merely the President and Vice-President of the Pennsylvania corporation. In 1942, the Vice President, and therefore a member of the governing body was Haydn C Covington, a Watchtower Society attorney who claimed not to be one of the anointed. (He had also only been a JW for 5 years when he became VP.) In fact, a few years later the rule was changed so that only anointed persons could be on the board of directors, and Covington had to resign his position as Vice President and that position was handed over to Frederick W Franz. After 2001, members of the board of directors no longer need to claim to be one of the anointed, and most of them since 2001 have not claimed to be of the anointed. Just a little bit of inside information on Covington is that he was a heavy drinker, and thought to be an alcoholic, and eventually dismissed and disfellowshipped after some run-ins with President Knorr. This is in the Wikipedia article, but what's not there is that just before his death he was working on a tell-all that was supposed to expose a lot of wrongdoings and embarrass Knorr and others. (I heard one Witness claim that it was supposed to "bring down the Watchtower.") The person who takes credit for talking him out of it says it was a hard-won battle and he was only convinced after a lot of begging and pleading, including more pleading from family members. Just after that incident, over the next few months in fact, he was reinstated, claimed to be of the anointed, and died. I'm not even sure he even got a chance to partake at the Memorial. But you can still find the funeral talk that Colin Quackenbush gave, posted somewhere on this forum. You can get a small sense of Covington's problems from the funeral talk, where Quackenbush almost has to apologize for giving it, but it's a good talk. Quackenbush himself was the Awake! magazine editor, who also got kicked out of Bethel after a run-in with Knorr, but who arrived back at Bethel upon Knorr's death in 1977. I should add that I don't think any of us should have a problem with an international organization of any kind having a governing body. It just means that it is organized to be guided by a committee or board instead of a "dictatorship" of one or two persons. That's a good thing. And the arrangement with GB helpers is even better, in my opinion. In addition to just mentioning the board of directors as the governing body prior to the 1971 change, it was also used as a way to refer to the entire Watch Tower Society. *** w50 10/1 p. 347 par. 22 The Way of Success *** The Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society is not the great mother organization of Jehovah’s witnesses who have received the Kingdom truth through it and who cooperate with it world-wide, using it as their legal and business servant and advisory governing body. *** w50 8/15 p. 251 par. 8 Answering the Foes of His Government *** The Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society, with main offices in Brooklyn, New York, acts advisorily as the governing body and servant of Jehovah’s witnesses in all lands. So what is true of Jehovah’s witnesses in America must be true of them throughout the earth. *** w50 1/1 p. 10 par. 2 Reviewing the Past Year’s Work World-wide *** The Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society, the governing body of Jehovah’s witnesses, has pointed out through its publications that the kingdom of heaven was established in 1914 *** w52 9/15 p. 567 par. 7 Loyalty the Test *** After being fed and directed through the faithful legal governing body, the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, for thirty years, many said, “Jehovah is also dealing through other agencies.” Thus they could advance their own selfish interests. Of course, the Watch Tower Society, although considered a legal entity by which to lead and govern all Jehovah's Witnesses earth-wide, was still considered to be the near equivalent of the old council at Jerusalem where decisions were made with respect to the rules for the Gentile converts, etc. Also, Paul is considered to have been included in the governing body since he told Timothy how to make appointments of overseers and servants. So this modern board of directors was considered to be something like a modern fulfillment of the council of apostles and older men at Jerusalem, and the extension of that authority as given to Paul. *** w52 5/1 pp. 281-282 God’s Way of Financing His Work *** Having received free, they gave free. Their unselfish course influenced others to show love, so that many early Christians sold all their possessions and turned over the proceeds to the governing body for them to use as they saw best for the advancement of the true worship and the benefit of the Christian community in general. So even when the governing body, technically and legally meant something else, it was still very similarly applied as an adaption of the original governing body (apostolic council) at Jerusalem. *** w52 11/15 p. 683 Timothy, the Youthful Minister *** Because of Timothy’s devotion to Jehovah God and Christ Jesus, the apostle Paul, under the guiding influence of the holy spirit, appointed Timothy to serve as an agent of the governing body of the Christian congregation in his day; being authorized to appoint mature men as overseers and assistants in the various Christian congregations. (1 Tim. 1:3; 3:1-15, NW) In this capacity Timothy pictured or represented the instrument that Jehovah God is using today, the Society of footstep followers of Christ Jesus, which likewise appoints servants in the Christian congregation in keeping with Jesus’ promise that he would set his faithful and discreet slave over all his belongings.—Matt. 24:45, NW.

  4. Owners of Noah’s Ark replica sue over Act of God The owner of the life-size replica of Noah’s Ark in northern Kentucky has sued its insurers for refusing to cover rain damage. Yes, rain. While the replica of the arc survived two years of monsoon-like rains in 2017 and 2018, the floods caused a landslide on its access road, and its five insurance carriers refused to cover nearly $1 million in damages. https://www.ctpost.com/local/article/Owners-of-Noah-s-Arc-replica-sue-over-Act-of-God-13892722.php
  5. Huawei Wants to Play Nice With Google and Microsoft, But Has Its 'Last Resort' Ready Huawei is an electronics powerhouse that has relied on partnerships with Google and Microsoft to help boost its global business. But the Chinese company must now face the possibility of a future without its American partners. Microsoft removed Huawei laptops from its online store on Friday, marking the latest move against Huawei after it was blacklisted on May 15 by the U.S. Department of Commerce over security concerns. A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment. “I think Huawei’s removal from the Microsoft Store portends to the future where Huawei, already kicked out of the U.S. in phones, spreads to its very high quality PCs,” says Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. Huawei’s existing business requires it to “rely on U.S. companies in the short and mid-term,” he added. The company also relies on several American semiconductor companies, including Qualcomm, Intel, Nvidia, and Lattice, along with British-American chip maker ARM, to supply parts to build its smartphones and laptops. Some of those chip makers have reportedly stopped supplying Huawei, but none of them have confirmed it. “It will take a decade for China to replace these capabilities,” says Moorhead. Google briefly pulled Huawei’s Android license on Sunday, but restored it on Tuesday after the Trump administration issued a temporary order to allow operations to continue for existing Huawei mobile users. Without the license, Huawei wouldn’t be able to sell smartphones with Google’s services, including Maps, Gmail, and Google Assistant, essentially forcing the company to come up with their own back-up plan or risk losing market share. Huawei laptops use Microsoft Windows, however Microsoft hasn’t commented on whether it plans to pull Huawei’s license to use Windows on future products.

  9. It would depend on how one would view the past, words of a pastor that was learning the ways of the truth by which the organization has refined its understanding through scripture of certain developments on earth before the invisible return of Christ to take over such obligations. Mainly the responsibility of the anointed on earth. Q852:1 QUESTION—Have we any reason for anticipating the World's conversion to Christianity before long? ANSWER—We have every reason to expect the world's conversion to Christ not many years hence, but perhaps this work will be brought about in an entirely different way and manner than is usually supposed. The Scriptures clearly foretold that the world would be far from being in harmony with the Lord and His righteous laws at the close of this present age or evil world. (Rev. 11:17,18; 2 Tim. 1:5; Mat. 24:37-39.) And that it would not be until after our Lord's second advent that all the nations would be brought to a knowledge of the truth, the way of salvation, and then converted to Christ and His rule of love and kindness. Meantime an election is taking place which when completed will result in the formation of a special class of the Lord's earnest devoted followers who when glorified and united with their Lord in the spiritual or heavenly realms will constitute the governing body, the Kings and Priests, under whose righteous administration, the nations shall all be taught of God and learn righteousness. (Isa. 26:9; Isa 54:13.) It will require all of the thousand years of Messiah's reign to subdue all unrighteousness and bring into subjection all evil and error. "For He must reign until He has placed all enemies under His feet even death the last enemy shall be destroyed." 1 Cor. 15:25,26. When the Watchtower was developed, there were specific instructions left behind, that any former Bethel member could comment on. If there is such a person here, it would be posted with vigor to the strength of knowing this process. THE WATCH TOWER BIBLE AND TRACT SOCIETY Was organized in the year 1884 as a means of putting forth the Message of the Kingdom in an orderly and systematic manner. The Corporation is controlled and managed by its Board of Directors and officers. The Board of Directors is composed of seven members. The Charter of the Corporation provides that the Board of Directors shall be self-perpetuating; that is to say, when a vacancy occurs by death or resignation the surviving members are empowered to fill such vacancy. Brother Russell was a member of the Board of Directors. Two [R6024 : page 391] days after his death the Board met and elected Brother A.N. Pierson as a member of the Board to fill the vacancy caused by Brother Russell's change. The seven members of the Board as now constituted are A.I. Ritchie, W.E. Van Amburgh, H.C. Rockwell, J.D. Wright, I.F. Hoskins, A.N. Pierson and J.F. Rutherford. As a matter of fact, anyone within the Watchtower organization should be well aware of it. If someone keeps silent, it's only to have the truth not to be known.
  10. Even Jesus used an expression for dogs, softening it to “little dogs”—puppies. That’s probably what I had in mind.
  11. And I thought it was an Eden Iguana!

  12. We thought that all snakes had legs up until they were cursed to travel on their belly and eat dust.
  13. Now you did say this however ( @TrueTomHarley ) Quote "because you are such a pit bull." So I'm not always silly and I'm not exactly mentally ill, but I am a bit of a dog then ..
  14. I suppose most of us feel that we want to make some sort of impression when we witness to people. I don't mean "impress" in the sense of "bigging ourselves up" (although, sadly, maybe some seek to do this), more in the sense that we want them to take note of what we are sharing with them. We do actually care about the people we talk to and the fact that the way of life we recommend will bring them immediate benefits, let alone the promises for the future. I currently study with a former heroin user. They are almost clear of drug dependency now, on a managed program, and this will be completed by the end of summer. This is completely due to motivation from Jehovah, provided through the Bible Study program, and in the year's duration of the study there have been no relapses to the amazement of support workers. Tobacco, cannabis, and other substance abuse have also been left behind. To see the tangible benefits enjoyed by this person physically, mentally, and spiritually as they get their life back is a real joy. So it does not matter what method or media is used to bring a person into contact with Jehovah and the healing power of his spirit as expressed through his living word. (Heb.4:12). "True worshippers will worship the Father with spirit and truth". Remember, "the Father is looking for such like ones to worship him".John 4:24. Don't underestimate the power of a tract to spark a fire in an honest heart that cannot be put out . (Compare James 3:5: "See how small a fire it takes to set a great forest ablaze"). My first encounter with Jehovah's Witnesses was by means of a tract that got into my house. It escaped my mother's predatory Roman Catholic surveilance of all things sans Imprimatur and fell into my curious hands. The information it presented piqued my curiosity for the next 12 years until I finally sourced a contact with those who had produced it. Oh yes, it may fall into the category of literature that now embarasses the likes of John Butler, but for me it was the key to a better life with immediate benefits, and a future hope. Here is an extract from the tract. What intrigued me most was who on earth were these sheep that Jesus died for, and what was the creature in the tree with Adam and Eve? From the day I got that tract, I registered every media mention (and otherwise) of Jehovah's Witnesses, but I never met one until finally I sought them out over 12 years later. I was 8 years old when I got that first tract.
  15. Having dispensed with the second part of this, let me go to the first. I did not say that you were mentally ill. I have said that any mental health professional would say that the type of thinking that you were displaying at the moment (most typically “all or nothing” thinking) is unhealthy. That is not the same thing. You also have to realize that I do not regard mentally ill as a pejorative label, and more than I would regard diabetic as one.
  16. I gave an upvote here, and everyone knows that I am stingy with them. I don’t think I have ever given a downvote. My upvote is conditional. I am assuming that little bit of Latin does not translate into “TrueTom is a fink.”
  17. Yes. When I signed on many years ago. They didn’t sneak up out of nowhere. Their role was known to me and everyone else from Day 1. Well I've said many times that it is difficult to know truth from guesswork, but if I've read up on the history correctly there wasn't actually a 'Governing Body' until 1971. Prior to this it seems it was a president and vice-president. I do know that I was never told about a GB in the late 60's. Quote. 'Don’t you think that means there used to be “old light?” ' No I think it means there were old lies and now there are new lies.
  18. Hmm! CHAPTER 3.2 God’s Champions and Adversaries: About the Borders between Normal and Abnormal Religiosity Herman M. van Praag Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, The Netherlands 3.2.1 INTRODUCTION The topic of this treatise is religiosity. I will discuss what I consider to be normal, abnormal and pathological manifestations of religiosity. Religion is and always was an emotion-laden theme, secularization of Western societies notwithstanding. Apparently, secularization has not advanced to such a degree that the concept of God and His worship has become irrelevant. Hence I will inevitably tread on toes; at times of those cherishing this concept, then again of those irritated by merely mentioning His name, but unable to effectuate an emotional divorce. To begin with, I will clarify my points of departure. First, my considerations pertain to the two religions that have shaped the cultures of Western society to such a large extent: Judaism and Christianity. Second, having no degrees in theology or psychology of religion, I am, intellectually speaking, a theological amateur. However, since I am religiously receptive I credit myself, experientially, with some degree of expertise. Moreover, I have to deal with the subject professionally. Being a psychiatrist, I simply cannot permit myself to evade an important segment of the spiritual domain within which man operates. I have to decide where I draw the border between normal and abnormal religiosity, and whether religious variables, in a given case, have played a role and if so, an adverse or beneficial one. For many decades religion has been psychiatry’s stepchild, being considered no more then an archaic remnant of an infantile past. In doing so, psychiatry seriously erred and harmed the interests of numerous patients. Does secular have a better understanding than those in a religious setting to understand the difference between good and evil? Does humanity have the same excuse as Adam and Eve in modern time? Proverbs 23:26, John 14 Quomodo enim tu loqueris de vero Deo?
  19. Yes. When I signed on many years ago. They didn’t sneak up out of nowhere. Their role was known to me and everyone else from Day 1. That is why you are not a Witness. Everything is exactly as it should be. Given how you feel, you have done exactly as you should. Yes. Every Witness takes about a year to do that, studying and trying things on for size. Throughout, they are in their familiar home environment and routine. Perhaps 5% of their time is spent in unfamiliar surroundings. College is far more “manipulative” than anything with a Witness connection. Students are typically separated 24/7 from their former stabilizing routine, environment, and family—a classic tool of those who would brainwash. Plus, if you study with Jehovah’s Witnesses, you know full well that you are going off the grid—the very opposite of what brainwashers do. Going to college, on the other hand, is no more controversial than seeking good healthcare. You keep playing this as though it were your trump card, the coup de grace—as though it was something meant to be hidden. They are very open about it. They have called it “tacking.” As you say, they have called it “new light.” Don’t you think that means there used to be “old light?” Not usually. Maybe never. I said that your last bit of reasoning was infantile. I said that because it was. I didn’t say you were. Not totally, no. No one here, to my knowledge, is calling for anyone’s execution. It is what they stand for that is the target. Everyone knows that. Not everything that you say is silly. I have acknowledged that some points you have raised are valid. Not always to your face, because you are such a pit bull. But I have put them in other writings.
  20. WITNESS, (JWinsider, Srecko) Since I downvote your comments should be a clue, as Jesus is the light and life, what makes you think your kind of animosity is part of that light and life that Jesus himself rebuked as NOT being part of the Body of Christ. Therefore, I harbor the truth. If the truth hurts, don't make claims of being anointed, don't make claims of being Christian. Even to false religion, you wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Your attacks on the Watchtower GB is irrational, cynical, and worse off, mentally disturbing. You need to deal with your issues on your own, and stop lying to the public of what you think is the truth.
  21. Billy, (Allen, Foreigner) , since you down vote my comment which shows Jesus as the light and life and destruction as coming from Satan, I wonder what you harbor in your heart.
  22. Firstly, you totally missed the point. A child is finding pleasure in revealing the face of one who is being destroyed. He has connected the dots, combining pleasure with the image of death. Who would devise such an activity for a child? Who would create such a sick joke, or jest , on children; God, or Satan? Jesus, or Satan? God is the judge, Satan is the destroyer, not Jesus. God gives plenty of warning when destruction upon His people is imminent; and for those who refuse to listen, He removes His protection from them, surrendering them to the Destroyer. Woe, you destroyer never destroyed, you traitor never betrayed! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished betraying, they will betray you. Isa 33:1 When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down. Exod 12:23 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. Heb 11:23 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer). Not one of these descriptions refer to Jesus. 2 Thess 1:5-10: All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people (the anointed faithful remnant) and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. I don’t own scripture. I don’t own the Word of God, which is “fire”, and how truth is revealed in the last days. “Fire” represents God’s word and carries judgment with the sentence of punishment, voiced by Jesus and those whom he “sends”. Jer 23:29; Matt 13:40-43; Mark 9:37 Satan, however, will carry out the “destruction”, not God or Christ. This will happen before Satan is then destroyed. 1 Cor 15:26 Woe, you destroyer never destroyed, you traitor never betrayed! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished betraying, they will betray you. Isa 33:1 Jesus is life. John 14:6 He does not relish destruction. Don't you remember when he wept over the coming destruction on his people? He wept! Luke 19:41-44 On the other hand, one of your GB members cannot stop talking about death before hundreds, perhaps thousands of children. Below is only one instance of his fascination with destruction and killing. I am thinking about a recent talk he gave on WT's version of Armageddon and how "amazing" all of that destruction on mankind would appear. Anyone amazed by death and suffering has no part in the the spirit of life coming from Christ. John 15:4; Col 2:18,19; Heb 12:15,16; Rev 8:10,11 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:7-11 Your leaders are thieves, preferring the darkness of destruction; while robbing all JWs from the light of life in Christ. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 3:18-21
  23. It appears the confusion still lies with wording. The organized religion in the OT was as simple as saying the Nation of Israel. What God was abolishing to use your wording was the worship of “false” God’s. What you and "witness" are saying, why the true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has no authority over the worship of false God’s. Where was that worship being displayed if not in the temples of false Gods? In modern time, it would be equal to false religion. What makes a false religion, false prophets? Who are false prophets, those that are determined to obscure God’s word and interpret God’s words to benefit themselves? A good example is, WITNESS. A self-made authority that James complained “no one thinks the way you do” while not admonishing those that think outside of biblical authority to stubbornly continue early church fathers rhetoric. Therefore, just like God intended to have sinless humans on earth, so too is his intention to have faithful followers on earth. If it wasn’t the case, what you are saying, God is wasting his time. Also, think about it, while a building doesn't make up the body of Christ, what is the benefit of having people "gather" in a building for practical purposes just like in a tent that was used for such gatherings. Why did Jesus enter a temple? Why was Jesus angered by people selling inside the temple that he himself called The House of Prayers?
