John Houston reacted to The Librarian in 124 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn
Russell purchased when he moved his operations to Brooklyn. It belonged to another preacher, Henry Ward Beecher, before he died. Russell also bought his other properties that Beecher had on Hick street, which I guess would be the first assembly hall. I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any connection between Russell and Beecher besides Russell just buying all his properties. It seems weird that he would buy that much property from the same person, and for the same purposes. The home on Columbia Heights was called "Beecher Bethel" before Russell bought it. After Russell bought it, it just became "Bethel" of the "House of Bethel".
This picture appeared in the Feb. 20, 1909 edition of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle right after it was sold to Charles Taze Russell.

Also, here is the listing that appeared in the paper before it was sold, if you want to know details about the inside. I just found it interesting.
Henry Ward Beecher was quite famous in his time, even more so was his daughter Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.

The attitude of most of us, is that people of fame and fortune should give it all up and be exactly like Jesus himself, one without a place to sleep or means to feed others , as we now it. But that is not what Jesus taught, it is what we have grown to think being humble should be. And it shouldn't be do. When our friends are of more wealthy than ourselves, we should not think I'll of them as long as they put first the Kingdom, correct? And those whose livelihoods are on television, sports, film and other venues which bring them fame, if they too are seeking first the Kingdom, what matter is it of ours?
We say as JW, we are like our neighbors, but when this happens we tend to judge them, finding something wrong in how they are living somehow, why? We are federal judges, lawyers, doctors, film producers, actors, musicians, firemen, emts, security officials, and many other things in this life. So that statement is true, we are just like our neighbors around us. What we have different is our outlook on life and its future. And we look to a heavenly government to solve the problems that plague this world today. Would that not be a fair statement about our beliefs as Jehovah's witnesses?  So with a widow mite, or a millionaire worth, we are all still part of this brotherhood, right? That shows self sacrificing love, correct? It may be hard, but not impossible, so let's love one another, all of us, all 8.2 million and growing of us. Agape my friends.

"You don't go to church in a Kingdom Hall" was stated during the public talk yesterday. The speaker then elaborated that "people who go to church, go to fulfill a spiritual obligation. Those coming to the kingdom hall are coming to learn."

You are warmly invited to meet with us to observe the anniversary of Jesus’ death. Find a meeting location near you.
    Find a Location Near You
“You Will Be With Me in Paradise”
How will this promise be fulfilled?
In the hours before he died, Jesus assured his faithful apostles that they would be with him in his heavenly Kingdom. (Luke 22:28-30) He later promised a condemned criminal: “You will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43) How will those words come true?
The fulfillment of both promises is possible because Jesus surrendered his life for mankind, even for sinners like that criminal. Jesus’ sacrifice was so vital that he commanded his followers to commemorate it.—Luke 22:19, 20.
This year, the anniversary of Jesus’ death falls on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Jehovah’s Witnesses invite you to meet with them on that date to observe the Memorial that Jesus instituted. You will hear an explanation of how his death can benefit you and your family.

I will not rashly say I understand what you are going through, but I have went through those very situations just here recently, and even with family it is still a heavy load to bear. But let it be known, you have those of us in this brotherhood you are aware and who send to you hugs and kisses, and will pray fervently for you and your family. The song mentioned is my very favorite. I have it on cd, in acapella, it sounds so wonderful. A cup of earl grey with lemon with the cold weather here in Kentucky. As we endure the ending of the system, watching our loved ones fall to that enemy, death. We must stay strong with our hand in Jehovah's right hand of righteousness and watch as they hear that voice and awaken to life in better condition than before, the real life! In paradise under Kingdom rule! Agape my friend, see you there!!

Was this a news article?  Sourced out by a news medium? Yes,it is negative news, but so was Davids infidelity, but it was erased from scripture, right? Jw.org will not report on such matters, why? So we only see and know the positive about us. Yet,all over the world we are being hailed before judicial courts of varying sizes for many reasons.  Some to honor Jehovah's name, yet at other times we bring reproach.  Those times,I personally want to know about. I do not want to be in the dark, with my head in the sand, unaware about somethings, when I am asked,no,commanded to defend my faith.
Those who hate us will use these times,I know, but I want still to be truthfully informed on all sides on a matter. Not spooned fed information from one source.

Great poem, may I make copy? I would like to pass it around in my congregation. I think it would shake the cobwebs off their tussles and let them know, if they believe the hype of the brotherhood of over 8+ million of us then this friendship, the self sacrificing love we should have for ALL , everyone of us should be there in action and deed, not just a part on the meeting or during the meeting then gone like the mist or fog of the morning. Best wishes, my friend. And I hope I get your permission, I await your response.

John Houston reacted to admin in Forums vs. Social Media
Forums, like email, is one of those "killer applications" that made the Internet so powerful. Social media came along and it appeared that forums would be pushed aside as "old technology" like IRC chat etc...
Using the more modern forums though, such as this one, is a different experience than the forums 1.0 of the past.
Videos can now easily be embedded with just a click (just like Facebook and Twitter) and there are even more options for editing text than possible on FB currently.
Images are very easily shareable now on forums compared to previous years.
I will posit that social media made forum 1.0 technology to innovate and keep up.
Going forward people may soon remember how refreshing categories and topics can be versus the firehose of information people typically get on a FB newsfeed which their algorithims select what you see. (think big brother 2.0)
There is also the possibility of allowing people to talk about things they don't want thier real names attached to. The USA was started in part due to "anonymous free speech". At times it is necessary. Granted, Twitter offers this already but forums had this 25 years ago and still do.
Forums like this one are also innovating with ideas on how to learn more from social media's success with such things as status updates etc...
Will we someday see the resurgence of massive forums where information is exchanged without a nauseating newsfeed?
    Enjoy!
