  4. ROCKFORD — Four sports competitions and a religious convention are coming to Rockford this year and next, promising to bolster the local economy to the tune of nearly $735,000, according to the Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Convention of Jehovah's Witnesses is returning to the BMO Harris Bank Center this summer after a 10-year hiatus, said John Groh, president and CEO of the Visitors Bureau. That event should drop about $589,500 on the region's shops, hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. "Then they'll go home and tell their friends and family" about Rockford, Groh said during a news conference today. "While they're here, they'll certainly enhance our quality of life and our economy." The events are: America's Table Tennis Team championships: About 200 will compete May 25-28 at the UW Health Sports Factory. Athletes and their family members will need more than 400 hotel rooms stays and should generate about $76,500 for the region. American Amateur Baseball Congress World Series: Nine-, 10-, 11- and 13-and-younger leagues from Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States will compete July 21-26. This is the first year for the 9-and-younger leagues. About 5,000 players, coaches and spectators flock to Mercyhealth Sportscore Two in Loves Park, requiring 3,000 hotel room nights and generating about $360,000. North American Fast Pitch Association Masters Midwest World Series: From Sept. 8-10, about 700 players ages 35-75 will compete at Mercyhealth Sportscore One in Rockford. It will require about 300 hotel rooms and generate $135,000. Jehovah's Witness convention: July 28-30, Aug. 4-6 and Aug. 11-13. It's expected to draw about 15,000. 2018 USA Ultimate Division III College Championships: About 700 players and about 2,000 spectators will gather May 17-20, 2018, at Mercyhealth Sportscore Two. About 850 hotel room nights and an economic impact of about $162,000 is expected. And, on Friday and Saturday, the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation youth wrestling state competition will happen at BMO. Approximately 1,000 10- to 14-year-old wrestlers will compete. Rockford is the longest-running host of the competition. "Rockford can continue to expect to have additional tournaments coming to our region," Groh said. "We're projecting anywhere from 60-plus additional tournaments per year (and) conservatively, over the next several years on an annual basis, $15 million in spending by visitors from new tournaments and new customers." Tourism and Rockford Park District officials said the tournaments were a big win for the Reclaiming First initiative to bolster sports tourism in town. "I always wanted to be somebody who could be a part of making Rockford a better place to live," said John Beck, the 12th Ward alderman who also works for the Rockford Park District. "We've got so many wonderful assets. It's really great that these organizations are recognizing what Rockford has to offer." Susan Vela: 815-987-1392; svela@rrstar.com; @susanvela

  7. I just spoke with my friend, she is a need greater and is serving in a rural place where there is no electricity, and conditions are not ok, so bad that she told me that she honestly does not imagine me visiting there, although I visit her everywhere she goes...the thing is that the small congregation of around 20 publishers was smart and attending the regional convention was so expensive for them that they decided to buy a modern second hand TV at a bargain price. They had the 3 days regional convention virtually, using a generator, the elder downloaded the assembly program, despite it being an assembly with a different accent they still enjoyed it. There is another story behind to get the generator working, the computer and cable that connects the computer to the TV, but I don't want to make a large story, it is clear that Jehovah helped them. My point is that I am glad they are using technology, that is how it should be, and not making people spend money they don't have and making them feel bad when they are not able to attend assemblies due to money problems.

  11. More than 4,000 believers converge for two-day assembly in the city ALBANY — For the past two decades, and twice a year, Jehovah’s Witnesses from across Georgia and the panhandle of Florida have gathered at the Albany Civic Center for circuit assemblies meant to foster fellowship and to bring them closer to God. They come from hundreds of ethnic and language backgrounds, yet are united by common goals. Above all, they want to honor Jehovah, whom believers call the God of the Bible and the Creator of all things. This past weekend, more than 4,000 witnesses from two different circuits flowed into Albany for a two-day assembly. On Saturday, the Florida District held its assembly, and on Sunday, Georgia District 1 held its gathering. “The purpose of these assemblies is to strengthen our faith and bring us closer to God,” Billy Goodman said. “We are all here learning to love God more, and according to God, we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves.” According to Goodman, there are more than 8 million Jehovah’s Witnesses spread out worldwide. “We come here twice a year, but we are actively spreading God’s good news around the world every day,” Goodman said. Goodman added he has been attending assemblies in Albany for more than 20 years and has enjoyed all of them. “I love this, it’s my life,” he said. “I may go to work every day to pay my bills, but my career is preaching the kingdom of God and the beautiful future he offers to mankind.” Goodman stressed that Jehovah’s Witnesses have no paid clergy, and the group does not “pass the plate around” in gatherings or assemblies. “We have always enjoyed coming to Albany because the city has always made us feel very welcome, and we appreciate the hospitality,” Goodman said. The modern-day organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses began at the end of the 19th century. At that time, a small group of Bible students who lived near Pittsburgh, Penn., began a systematic analysis of the Bible. They compared the doctrines taught by the churches with what they felt the Bible actually teaches. According to jw.org, among that group of students was a man named Charles Taze Russell. While Russell took the lead in the Bible education work at that time and was the first editor of The Watchtower, he was not the founder of a new religion. The goal of Russell and the other Bible Students, as the group was then known, was to promote the teachings of Jesus Christ and to follow the practices of the first-century Christian congregation.

  12. Meet Puerto Rico, the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) responsible for attracting meetings, conventions, trade shows, sporting events, and incentive groups to Puerto Rico, recently hosted the Jehovah’s Witnesses Special Convention, the largest city-wide convention of the year, bringing an estimated $5 million economic impact to Puerto Rico. From August 22-31, more than 34,500 attendees from the United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Colombia, and Cuba experienced the culture of Puerto Rico and stayed throughout the island, from San Juan to Ponce for a total of 7,500 room nights. “We are honored that that the Jehovah’s Witnesses chose Puerto Rico to host their Jehovah’s Witnesses Special Convention,” said Milton Segarra, President & CEO, Meet Puerto Rico (MPR-Puerto Rico Convention Bureau). “Puerto Rico has everything it takes to host a large scale, city-wide convention - including a state-of-the-art convention center, a wide variety of accommodations including major hotel brands, and a strong infrastructure. And we offer “only-in- Puerto Rico” experiences, for planners seeking locations that provide experiences to make their events memorable while maintaining an authentic experience. We are fortunate that Puerto Rico delivers that charge.” Delegates and exhibitors were linked to virtual attendees as well in the United States via live stream set up at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, the Puerto Rico Coliseum, Ponce Trade Fair Central as well as Arecibo and Humacao. Itinerary highlights included day trips, and pre-and post-tours. The delegates stayed in San Juan, Manati, Bayamon and Ponce. The Jehovah’s Witnesses organizational committee said they were pleased with the way the conference was handled and will bring meetings to Puerto Rico over the next five years, including the potential to hold the 2021 Annual Convention in Puerto Rico again. A number of reasons have played into their decision to return to Puerto Rico. “Puerto Rico had the flavor of what we wanted to share with our delegates. It is easy to reach, has a wide variety of accommodations, wonderful restaurants, hospitals and scores top marks in their venues and customer service,” said Jorge Alanis, Special Assembly Committee Coordinator. “But what really sets them apart is the combination of the authentic experiences our attendees bring back with them as well as the wonderful people we have worked with and met. We understand that 5,000 local volunteers contributed to our conference and that says a lot about the care taken to ensure all conference attendees feel taken care of,” he said. Puerto Rico continues to position itself as an ideal destination for meetings and conventions, offering a state-of-the-art convention center, a wide variety of hotels, strong infrastructure and unique attractions with the added advantage of being on a tropical island in the Caribbean. One in four rooms occupied in hotels that can accommodate large-scale meetings belongs to the groups and conventions segment.

According to Jehovah’s Witnesses in Lesotho spokesperson, Khotso Pitso, the convention theme will help people develop a closer relationship with God and also help family members to be loyal to each other. “The convention will feature discussions and videos that will help people develop stronger bonds with friends, family members and with God,” Mr Pitso said. It will highlight the practical lessons we can learn about remaining loyal despite intense suffering. “The other feature film, O Jehovah I Trust In You, will illustrate how King Hezekiah ‘held fast to Jehovah’ while being besieged by his enemies and the lessons we can draw from his story.” The other highlight of the convention will be a public discourse with the theme: “When will loyal love triumph over hatred?” He also indicated there would be a baptism session for new converts. Each morning session will kick off with special music videos. The convention will draw delegates from all the 10 districts of Lesotho.
