Un grupo de testigos de Jehová realizó lo que podría considerarse como uno de los secuestros más extraños hasta el momento, y es que privaron de la libertad a sus vecinos asegurando que se encontraban huyendo del fin del mundo, de acuerdo con reportes policiales de Alberta, en Canadá. Jacqueline Schaffter, juez de la corte provincial argumento que los tres detenidos, dos mujeres y un hombre que hasta el momento no han sido identificados, sufren de un extraño trastorno psicótico el cual hasta el momento no ha sido revelado y por el que deberán llevar un tratamiento para evitar hacerse daño a si mismos o a terceros. El extraño secuestro ocurrió en el mes de noviembre del año 2017 cuando cinco personas entre ellas dos menores de edad, fueron obligados a abandonar su hogar y abordar una camioneta junto a los testigos de Jehová, cuatro de los cuales se encontraban completamente desnudos. El hombre y su familia lograron escapar y ayudaron a las autoridades a dar con los sospechosos quienes de inmediato fueron arrestados. EDMONTON — An Alberta family allegedly kidnapped by a group of naked neighbours, who may have unknowingly drank some hallucinogenic tea, say it was a frightening experience. And the family members say until they learn more facts about what happened, they don't know how to feel about the ordeal. "We just don't have enough information," said one family member, who asked not to be named. "We have no answers as to whether anything was purposely taken or not purposely taken." The family members were reluctant to share their experience because of the ongoing court case, but they told The Canadian Press they know the accused as neighbours. They are all members of the same Jehovah's Witnesses church. When one of the female accused showed up at the family's home in Leduc County south of Edmonton on Monday morning, clothed and acting frantic, they thought there must be an emergency. But the family said with her were four other people who were naked and the family was forced outside and into a BMW. The man was allegedly put in the trunk and his daughter and her baby in the car with the others. While the car was being driven, the family said the man managed to jump out of the trunk. As the car slowed, the woman and her baby then managed to get away. The man, woman and child were then picked up by a passerby in his truck, but the truck was allegedly rammed by the car. RCMP have said that when they arrived at the scene of the crash, they took five people into custody. Three adults, a man and two women, are facing charges of kidnapping, resisting arrest and mischief and are to next appear in court Nov. 30. Two teenage girls also in the car were released without charges. No one was injured. The father of the girls, ages 13 and 15, has said his daughters and their mother were having breakfast Monday morning with another couple when they decided to have some tea recently brought back from a trip overseas. The father said the tea was from India, but the family that was allegedly kidnapped said one of the accused had travelled earlier in the year to Thailand and South Korea. "It's absolutely crazy," said the father, who cannot be named due to a court publication ban protecting the identity of youths involved in the case. "It's a scary thought thinking, 'Oh, let's try this tea that we purchased.' And then all sit down thinking they're just going to have a nice morning and end up in that circumstance." He said the girls don't remember what happened. The Mounties have not said if they're investigating whether a hallucinogenic tea motivated the alleged crime but have said drugs and/or alcohol may have played a role. University of Alberta researchers are concerned after finding E. coli bacteria survived recommended temperatures for cooking meat. Lynn McMullen, a food biologist, and other researchers at the U of A’s Agri-Food Discovery Place, have been performing experiments on E. coli after one of students found the bacteria in cooked beef. McMullen said that should have been impossible. “We had a huge collection of strains of E. coli that came from meat processing plants, and we decided to screen and see if any were heat resistant,“ McMullen said. “So our student came back and said ‘This one survives 70 minutes at 60 C,’ and I said, ‘Wrong, E. coli doesn’t do that. Something’s wrong.’ ” Most E. coli strains heated to 60 C are typically killed in less than a minute, McMullen said. The heat-resistant strains survived at that temperature for more than 70 minutes. The heat-resistant bacteria survived at 71 C, the temperature long recommended by Health Canada to cook beef. Collaborators from Alberta Health Services, who have worked with McMullen, have found that some of the bacteria in those made ill by E. coli have the same heat-resistant genetics as the strains studied at the University of Alberta. “We know that approximately two per cent of all of the E. coli that are in the databases have the genetics for heat resistance,” McMullen said. Salt also makes E. coli bacteria heat resistant, though McMullen and the other researchers don’t know why. Though McMullen and the other researchers haven’t discovered what temperature will ultimately kill all E. coli, McMullen recommended using a thermometer and cooking meat at 71 C to 73 C. “It doesn’t matter when you’re grilling any ground meat, you should be using a thermometer.” E. coli bacteria comes in two forms, as pathogens and non-pathogens. While pathogens infect people and make them sick, the non-pathogens are responsible for spoiling meat. Symptoms of E. coli includes nausea, mild to severe cramps, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. In severe cases it can lead to death. In 2012, more than 2,000 XL Foods beef products from the company’s plant in Brooks were recalled in Canada and the United States due to E. coli contamination. Seventeen people fell ill from eating the contaminated beef.
