  1. According to an official press release, FIFA has officially partnered with Algorand. As per the release, Algorand will now be an official sponsor of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 and a regional supporter in North America and Europe for ‘FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022’. Algorand will also become FIFA's official blockchain platform and will offer the association its ‘official blockchain-enabled wallet solution’. FIFA will supply sponsorship assets like advertising, media exposure, and promotional possibilities, while Algorand will assist FIFA in establishing its digital assets strategy. According to Silvio Micali, founder of Algorand, “This partnership with FIFA, the most globally recognised and distinguished organisation in sports, will showcase the potential that the Algorand blockchain has to transform the way we all experience the world’s game.” https://cointelegraph.com/news/algorand-becomes-first-us-blockchain-sponsor-of-fifa-world-cup
  2. Workers in Qatar continue to be mistreated despite promises to improve rights ahead of the 2022 World Cup, Amnesty International says. A new report from the human rights group says thousands of workers are going unpaid. It adds that a new commission set up to help improve workers' rights is failing to protect them. Amnesty has urged Qatari authorities to "end the shameful reality of labour exploitation". "Despite the significant promises of reform which Qatar has made ahead of the 2022 World Cup, it remains a playground for unscrupulous employers," said Stephen Cockburn, Amnesty International's deputy director of global issues. "Migrant workers often go to Qatar in the hope of giving their families a better life - instead many people return home penniless after spending months chasing their wages, with too little help from the systems that are supposed to protect them." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49747688 Qatar has imported hundreds of thousands of construction workers for the 2022 World Cup, with seven new stadiums being constructed specifically for the tournament

  4. MOSCOW — Workers building stadiums for next year’s World Cup in Russia have faced repeated abuses and routinely gone unpaid for several months, according to a report by Human Rights Watch released on Wednesday. At a stadium in Yekaterinburg, some workers were required to work in temperatures of minus-25 degrees Celsius (minus-13 Fahrenheit) “without sufficient breaks for them to warm themselves,” the report states. “FIFA is essentially expecting us to take their word for it that their work has improved workers’ lives,” Jane Buchanan, the report’s author, told The Associated Press. “This is supposed to be the reformed FIFA, moving away from secrecy and a lot of deals behind closed doors.” At least 17 workers have died on World Cup construction sites, according to Building and Wood Workers’ International, a trade union. Known deaths include workers killed in falls and the case of a worker from North Korea who died of a reported heart attack at the stadium in St. Petersburg, which will host the final of the Confederations Cup on July 2, as well as World Cup matches in 2018.
