Source. So what is The Weather Company being accused of? According to the lawsuit...
For years, the company "deceptively used its Weather Channel App to amass its users' private, personal, geolocation data...all the while leading users to believe that their data will only be used to provide them with 'personalized local weather data, alerts and weather forecasts.'"
"TWC has then profited from that data, using it and monetizing it for purposes entirely unrelated to weather or the Weather Channel App."
FYI, people really like checking the weather. The app has 45 million monthly active users.
For its part, The Weather Company (owned by IBM) said its data collection has always been kosher and will defend its disclosures "vigorously."
Zoom out: File this case within the broader debate of how tech companies collect, use, and monetize the personal data you choose to share with them.
