ACFD Investigating Intentionally-Set Fire at Arlington Church

 

Someone tried to light a door on fire at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses church in the East Falls Church neighborhood of Arlington this morning.

The fire was set using a flammable substance just before 10 a.m., according to Arlington County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Jason Hart. The fire damaged the door — an entrance to the church sanctuary — and some surrounding bushes but did not spread beyond that.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office are still on scene this afternoon, gathering evidence.

This is the second such arson case currently being investigated in Northern Virginia, Hart said; a similar fire was recently set at a Jehovah’s Witnesses church in the Falls Church section of Fairfax County.

Arlington authorities are coordinating the investigation with their Fairfax County counterparts, according to Hart.

Arlington Fire and Fairfax Co. Fire investigate 2 arsons at Jehovah's Witnesses churches

WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Local fire crews are the scene of two arson investigations at Jehovah's Witnesses churches that they believe may be connected.

Arlington Co. Fire and Fairfax Co. Fire are working an arson investigation at a Jehovah's Witnesses church at 5820 Arnet St. in Falls Church.

Fire officials say the arson happened on Wednesday.

Arlington Co. Fire is also investigating an arson at a church on Williamsburg Blvd. in Arlington that happened Thursday morning.

Firefighters say the door had been lit on fire, and they believe an accelerant was used.

The two are being investigated together because of similarities, according to fire officials.

ARLINGTON, Va. - Fire investigators are looking into two separate fires that have taken place at two Jehovah’s Witnesses churches in the past two days. The most recent fire happened Thursday and investigators are trying to determine if the incidents are connected.

When employees arrived at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses church in Arlington shortly after 10 a.m., they found a door leading to the sanctuary on fire. Firefighters put it out within minutes, but their attention has shifted as they say this is likely the work of an arsonist.

“We did smell an accelerant upon our arrival,” said Arlington County Fire Lt. Deputy Jason Hart. “We also had a neighboring jurisdiction bring in their accelerant dog which was able to come around and investigate the scene. He did hit on around that door area for use of an accelerant.”

“It's shocking,” said church member Carlos Quezada. “It's never happened before with us. This is the first time I hear that.”

Mercy Musond said this incident will not deter her from coming to worship here.

“Not really because it's never happened before,” said Mercy Musond. “I believe we are safe.”

A minister at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses said staff is reviewing its security plan.

A similar incident happened Wednesday at another church four miles away in Falls Church.

“There is a similar case in our neighboring jurisdiction where another Jehovah's Witness church also had a fire there and we are investigating and coordinating with their office to determine if this is related,” said Hart.
