TransCanada waved goodbye to a proposed $15.7 billion pipeline project in eastern Canada, citing regulatory delays (oh yeah, and oil halving to $50 a barrel in 2014).

The Energy East Pipeline would have impressed even the most finicky plumber, carrying 1.1 million barrels of crude per day from the Western CA tar sands to refineries near the Atlantic coast. Pipeline proponents (Conservative politicians, for one) argued the project would have created thousands of construction jobs and boosted exports.

But environmental groups and Indigenous leaders are popping champagne over the news. They’ve raised concerns over the pipeline’s impact on climate change and the potential for spills (it would’ve passed through 700 bodies of water).

Now TransCanada will turn its attention to its controversial $8 billion Keystone XL pipeline connecting Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast, which was resurrected by the Trump administration.
