SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur – The civilian reportedly killed by New PeopleÂ’s Army (NPA) in Surigao del Norte on Wednesday could never be a military spy because his religion prohibited him from participating in any government or other politically-related efforts, the military said Thursday.
Jepti Acido, 32, was an elder of the JehovahÂ’s Witness, according to Capt. Francisco Garello, the civil military operation officer of the ArmyÂ’s 36thInfantry Battalion.
“This is another failed operation of the NPA, which only shows how poor their intelligence gathering network is,” Garello said.
JehovahÂ’s Witnesses church members were prohibited to participate in any political undertaking.
Acido was riding a motorcycle with two other church members when fired at by alleged NPA members in Barangay Lahi in Gigaquit town in Surigao del Norte on Wednesday.
Acido died from a bullet wound in the face while his companions, Virgil Flor Ortiz, 23; and Abner Malaque, 20, sustained gunshot wounds on their legs.
Lieutenant Colonel Xerxes Trinidad, the 36thIB commander, said the attack was condemnable and showed that the rebels were not sincere in resuming the talks.
“We vehemently condemn these treacherous attacks to the civilians by the CPP-NPA. These actions manifest their true intentions of deception and how to resolve conflict in Mindanao,” Trinidad said.
“The attack was made to sow fear and force the community not to support government peace initiatives. I am calling on all peace loving people of the said community to include the entire municipality of Gigaquit, let us stand together and condemn these barbaric actions of the NPAs,” he added.

Hello guest! Please register or sign in (it's free) to view the hidden content. Dear Brothers:
We are pleased to share encouraging highlights from the 2017 service year report. The peak number of publishers was 8,457,107. Jehovah’s people spent a total of 2,046,000,202 hours in the ministry, a 3.1 percent increase from last year. We are especially encouraged to see a 7.4 percent increase in the number baptized, with a total of 284,212! This is evidence that we take seriously our commission to “make disciples.” (Matt. 28:19) We were delighted to see that the average number of regular pioneers was 1,225,279. This was an 8.6 percent increase! The worldwide Memorial attendance figure was 20,175,477. Significant features of the service year report will soon be available on jw.org and in JW Library, Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY, and Watchtower Library. These figures provide compelling evidence of Jehovah’s blessing on our work.—Isa. 60:22.
Throughout our branch territory, it is evident that Jehovah is searching for those “rightly disposed for everlasting life” in the language of their heart. (Acts 13:48) For instance, we are happy to report the formation of the first ever Cherokee-language congregation during the past service year. The first Swahili-language circuit in our branch territory was formed effective September 1, 2017. In addition to those reached in the door-to-door ministry, public witnessing initiatives are reaching more people than ever with the Bible’s message. There are over 17,000 publishers participating in the special metropolitan public witnessing program in 17 locations. Harbor witnessing is now organized in 45 ports, with 4,400 trained publishers boarding cargo and cruise ships in an effort to witness to crew members. Public witnessing campaigns organized at large state fairs and sporting events are exposing millions of individuals to the good news, as well as adding great impetus to this aspect of the preaching work.
Much has also been accomplished in regard to Kingdom Hall usage in the United States branch territory. Twenty branch planning meetings were held with bodies of elders in metropolitan areas affecting over 2,200 congregations. Implementing non-construction solutions such as merging or relocating congregations has reduced the need for new auditoriums in these areas from 41 to 19, with a potential savings of millions of dollars!
Be assured that Jehovah values your faithful service and that he will continue to give you the necessary strength to “fully accomplish your ministry” in the coming year!—2 Tim. 4:5; Isa. 40:31.
Your brothers,
PS to coordinators of the bodies of elders:
Please arrange for this letter to be read to the congregation by the elder handling the part “Annual Service Report” in the Life and Ministry Meeting the week of January 1, 2018. Thereafter, the letter should be posted on the information board. This postscript should neither be read to the congregation nor be posted on the information board.

Philippines to make enthusiastic singing of national anthem mandatory
27 June 2017 From the section
Hello guest! Please register or sign in (it's free) to view the hidden content.
The Philippine House of Representatives has approved a bill making enthusiastic singing of the national anthem compulsory.
"The singing shall be mandatory and must be done with fervour," the bill states. The word "mandatory" is not in the existing legislation.
It also provides official music for the tune, which must be adhered to.
Punishment for breaking the rules could include a fine of 50,000-100,000 pesos (£780-£1,560; $2,800-$5,590).
That fine is substantially more than the current minimum and maximum of 5,000-20,000 pesos (£78-£312).

Sat Feb 11, 2017 | 8:16 AM EST Earthquake in southern Philippines kills four, damages infrastructure
4h ago | 01:16 Powerful quake kills at least six in southern Philippines (Reuters) - Four people died and more than 100 were injured after a powerful earthquake struck the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines late Friday, damaging some structures and cutting power in many areas, local officials said.
The 6.7 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km and the epicenter was about 13 km east of the city of Surigao, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake.
Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines' seismic agency, said on radio on Saturday morning 89 aftershocks had been recorded and more could be expected but they were unlikely to cause significant damage.
Friday's quake was the strongest since the city was rocked by a 6.9 quake in 1879, Solidum said.
People rushed to open spaces and spent the night in parks and shelter areas, according to radio reports.

Bro. Walls developed the theme, "Keep Your Spritual Vision Open"
Here's one of the talk's highlights:
“If we don't acknowledge the things unseen, it could be damaging. Hence, if we recognize that we're part of vast organization both seen or unseen it gives us courage....Peel the ceiling, take the roof off this place and look up and see Jehovah. He is the One who's directing, He is the One who's encouraging us to see the reality.” — Bro. Ralph Walls
