Dr. Waddy G. Baroody, Jr. Florence, SC - Dr. Waddy George Baroody, Jr., 91, of Florence died peacefully on February 13, 2018, after being in declining health for several years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Smoak Baroody, in 2014. A memorial service celebrating Dr. Baroody's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21st, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1215 Alligator Road. The family will be receiving friends at 1911 Pineland Avenue in Florence. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Betsy Baroody Lassiter (Michael), of Florence. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, David Smoak (Shelby) of Yonges Island, SC. Survivors also include his aunt, Pauline E. Nofal, of Florence, and several nieces and nephews and special cousins. Dr. Baroody was born April 16, 1926, in Florence, a son of the late Waddy G. Baroody and Adele Nofal Baroody. He was a graduate of Florence High School. He graduated from The Citadel with a BS Degree. He obtained a post-graduate medical degree from The Medical College of South Carolina, Charleston, SC. He completed his internship at St. Louis City Hospital, St. Louis, MO, and his residency in Internal Medicine at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC, where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth. After residency, he completed a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as the Chief Gastroenterologist at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, Denver, CO. He then returned to Florence in 1955 where he entered into a private practice for 56 years. He was the first Board-Certified Internist in Florence certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He became a Fellow in the American College of Physicians in 1961. He was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1996. Dr. Baroody will always be remembered as a kind, sweet and compassionate physician, always placing the welfare of his patients as his top priority. He was a loving husband and father. He was an avid photographer since his days as a teenager and was a collector of unique rocks and minerals. His daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Michael, would like to thank the staff at Pee Dee Gardens where he had been a resident for five years and Pruitt Health Hospice.
