Veterans Transportation Options in Southwest Washington Booklet The Human Services Council has released a newly designed and updated Southwest Washington Veteran's Transportation Resources booklet! The book describes in detail the different transportation options available for veterans and their families. These options include everything from directions and information about the local transit systems all the way to veteran specific transportation for medical appointments to and from the Vancouver VA Medical Center and the Portland VA Medical Center. The booklet covers a geographic region across five counties: Wahkiakum, Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania, and Klickitat. Simply open the PDF, and navigate to the county of your residence. The table of contents is linked throughout the document, so clicking on the county name will take you to that section. The different county sections are also designed to be used in conjunction with other services to reach the VA Medical Centers, and will contain references to those sections. These references are also linked, therefore clicking on them will take you to the corresponding section of the booklet. What is Sponsor-A-Ride Transportation Service? The Sponsor-A-Ride (SAR) program provides transportation options for our aging population, those who are not eligible for publicly funded programs yet because of frequency of need or a fixed income cannot afford private pay options. Through the ride sponsorship program, family, friends, neighbors, and the community can make donations to a transportation account established on behalf of an older adult. The benefit of using the Sponsor-A-Ride transportation program is to ensure access to services that promote independence and dignity and allow individuals to maintain an interactive lifestyle with their community. Eligibility If you are an adult age 55 or over or have a disability and reside in Clark County, AND: Have an individual sponsor account OR: Are not otherwise eligible for transportation assistance you may be able to access transportation services through SAR. Funding Source With funds in an individual account created by family and friends, you simply need to call the SAR phone number to request transportation arrangements. General donations from the community may also be available to assist individuals that do not meet eligibility requirements for existing programs and grants. Administrative costs will be included with your trip charge. Donations for SAR are always welcome, whatever the amount! You can donate by clicking HERE. Matching Rides When you request a ride, we find the type of transport most suited to your abilities, locate the lowest-cost option given your needs, and arrange for service with one of our providers. If eligible, transportation is provided at no cost to the individual with the highest quality of customer service and dependable service delivery. HSC operates a number of programs including some centered around providing transportation resources to serve low-income, seniors, people with disabilities and other at-risk populations in Southwest Washington. One of the transportation services offered by HSC is the Employment Transportation program. Through this program HSC is able to assist low-income individuals in Clark County by providing transportation options to help individuals get to work and/or work-related activities such as interviews and job-related training. In 2011, the Human Services Council launched its Bike-to-Work program as an alternative means of helping people get to their jobs or job training. The Bike-to-Work program is funded in part through a grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation and offers qualified individuals the following: A bicycle Helmet Bike locks Miscellaneous bike related accessories A five-hour bicycle training and safety course Individuals interested in this program are initially screened through one of HSC’s numerous community partner agencies and then referred to staff at HSC for further screening to participate in this program. Individuals selected for this program are required to participate in a five-hour bicycle training course where they will learn basic bike laws and etiquette, route finding/map reading, basic bike usage and maintenance, and at the end of the training participate in a group bike ride. Some participants may be eligible for C-TRAN bus passes to combine with the use of their bike to get to their employment related destinations. WE ACCEPT DONATIONS! The Bike-to-Work program depends on donations from community members to provide the bikes and equipment to program participants.
