  2. The VOC (Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie) was Dutch and originated in Amsterdam and the EIC was British and originated in London. They share a history of allies and war. Fun fact: due to the 80 year war with Spain. The Dutch government did not have money for military ships. So the VOC came up with a plan to sell shares of the company to fund military ships. This resulted in the first ever stock exchange. (I like history a lot)

It wasn't "dead" like some malls out there.... I went in for Visionworks..... but I did notice the food court and theatre's appeared dead compared to previous decades.

Seeing the demise of malls in general causes a certain sadness considering how important a part of everyday life it was back in the 80's and 90's

  4. One female truck driver, she said, told her how she'd been unloading at a facility for six hours without being allowed to use the facilities — and when she asked a third time, was given a roll of toilet paper and told to go behind the building.

Why can't she just work from home like me instead of working a job that spreads the virus?!? Now let me just place this grocery delivery order...

  5. Men are a misunderstood lot, which all in all is probably for the best. Women are better off not knowing that we eat with our hands the minute they leave the room or that we use their nail clippers to trim our nose hair. Better for them, better for us. Still, it's annoying that women spend more time and money trying to understand the minds of cats than they do wondering about what makes men tick. Which is why they'll never understand...

Our consuming need to own the biggest and most expensive version of just about everything.
Our compulsive desire to drive off-road vehicles in cities and use corkscrews that resemble offshore drilling equipment is well documented. As marketing targets, men are suckers for terms like "professional" or "industrial strength," because inside every man is the germ of every profession he ever imagined himself one day excelling at. Most of these purchases are harmless, little more than childish wish fulfillment played out at a higher testosterone level. But occasionally we go too far. The guy upstairs from me once boasted that he had a filter which filled his flat with "operating theater quality air." I kept him away from my surgical steel steak knives.

Why we are so bad at shopping.
We've never been trained to do it the right way. Supermarkets are like giant booby traps for males -- which is why if you send a man out to get eggs, sugar and bread, you should not be surprised if he returns home with a case of beer, a pair of jeans and a tree.

The reason why we don't like to discuss The Relationship.
Most of us will find any excuse to dodge those conversations that start with questions like "Are you really happy?" and "Where do you see us going?" A relationship is a delicate thing, like an antique clock, and we know what will happen if we start picking it apart. Often our reticence will result in a lengthy conversation about why we have trouble talking about... "The Relationship."

Why we think we can fix things.
Almost all men believe they can repair virtually anything with a little patience. In reality, we're only half right. Men are extremely good at taking things apart: whether it's a dishwasher or an antique clock, a man can break it down to its most basic components in no time. Unfortunately, this is where our expertise usually leaves off, and we're mostly satisfied with leaving bits and pieces spread all over newspaper on the kitchen table.

    Men and video games.
Women cannot understand how grown men can waste huge chunks of their lives zapping things off a screen. When a man repeatedly rings his girlfriend to say he has to work late and routinely comes home at two in the morning all glassy eyed, she will usually take this as evidence of an affair -- when it's more likely that a pirated copy of Streetfighter II is making the rounds at the office.

  6. Something interesting:

This is why, in Menni et al. [1] // (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41591-020-0916-2) //, their formula for predicting COVID-19 infection based on subjective patient symptoms has a sex multiplier of 0.44 if patient is male.

    [1] C. Menni, A. Valdes and M. Freidin, "Real-time tracking of self-reported symptoms to predict potential COVID-19," Nature Medicine, vol. 26, pp. 1037-1040, 2020.

  7. According to the document signed Thursday, both current civil servants and people about to assume a government position must disclose which digital assets they own, as well as in what quantity and from where they were purchased. The first reports must be provided from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2021.

The reports must include all types of digital assets – including cryptocurrencies, digital securities and utility tokens – owned by a current or prospective civil servant, as well as their spouses and children. People seeking government roles will also have to make a crypto disclosure during the application process.

  8. "BBVA has begun to roll out the trials of what will become its first commercial service for the trading and custody of digital assets. The new service, which is to be offered through BBVA Switzerland, will make it possible to manage bitcoin transactions and have deposits in this cryptocurrency."

  9. https://www.microstrategy.com/en/company/company-videos/microstrategy-completes-650-million-offering-of-convertible-senior-notes

This guy raised $650 million from investors (or close to it) in less than 4 days? And the people buying this debt KNEW he was going to buy bitcoin with it.

the key word here is convertibles. So let's say BTC tanks and MS shares also tank and then when the debt comes due and MS can't pay what happens is basically that the debt gets converted into stocks. But since the stock has most likely crashed that means that the bondholders get s very large share of the company. So if they feel that MS has other assets that they value this is a win win, because either they get their money back in four years or they get to buy lots of shares super cheap.
