    THOSE WHO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE FLESH SET THEIR MINDS ON THE THINGS OF THE FLESH, BUT THOSE WHO LIVE ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT, ON THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT.

    SOME MIGHT IMAGINE THAT THIS IS A CONTRAST BETWEEN THOSE WHO ARE NOT IN THE TRUTH AND THOSE WHO ARE, BETWEEN THOSE WHO ARE NOT CHRISTIANS AND THOSE WHO ARE. 
    However, Paul was writing to “those who are in Rome as God’s beloved ones, called to be holy ones.” 
    Rom. 1:7

    Thus, Paul was contrasting Christians who walked according to the flesh with Christians who walked according to the spirit. He linked “living according to the flesh” with “the sinful passions” that were then “at work in [their] bodies.”

    So when speaking of those who “set their minds on the things of the flesh,” Paul was referring to people who are ruled by or focused on their desires and leanings as imperfect humans. In the main, these are ones who follow their cravings, impulses, and passions, whether sexual or otherwise.

    The Bible Students understood that it was not enough for them to inform relatives, close friends, and church members of their stand on false religion. The whole world needed to see Babylon the Great for what it is—a religious prostitute! 

    Accordingly, between December 1917 and early 1918, the few thousand Bible Students zealously distributed 10,000,000 copies of a tract featuring the subject “The Fall of Babylon”—a hard-hitting indictment of Christendom. As you can imagine, the clergy were furious; but undeterred, the Bible Students kept right on with this important work. They were determined to obey “God as ruler rather than men.”

    What can we conclude? 
    That far from becoming enslaved to Babylon the Great during the war, these Christian men and women were breaking free from its influence and were helping others to do so.

    VOU  LHE MOSTRAR O JULGAMENTO DA GRANDE PROSTITUTA QUE ESTÁ SENTADA SOBRE MUITAS ÁGUAS.

    Os Estudantes da Bíblia avisaram seus parentes e amigos e as pessoas da sua igreja de que eles não apoiavam mais a religião falsa. Mas eles entenderam que isso não era suficiente. O mundo inteiro precisava saber quem realmente era Babilônia, a Grande — uma prostituta! 

    Por isso, entre dezembro de 1917 e o início de 1918, os milhares de Estudantes da Bíblia distribuíram 10 milhões de folhetos com o seguinte tema: “A Queda de Babilônia” (em inglês). Sem rodeios, esse folheto mostrava as mentiras das religiões que se diziam cristãs. Como era de esperar, os líderes das igrejas ficaram furiosos! Mas os Estudantes da Bíblia não se deixaram abalar e continuaram com a sua pregação. Eles estavam determinados a “obedecer a Deus como governante em vez de a homens”.

    O que tudo isso mostra? Mostra que, durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, aqueles cristãos não estavam entrando no cativeiro de Babilônia, a Grande. Muito pelo contrário, eles estavam se libertando da religião falsa e ajudando outros a fazer o mesmo.

    Just like Jesus’ early followers, we meet together to learn and to be encouraged.

    Even experienced servants of God need encouragement. Consider Joshua. He had served God faithfully for many years. Yet, Jehovah told Moses to encourage him, saying: “Commission Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him, because he is the one who will cross over before this people and he is the one who will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.”

    Joshua was about to take on the huge responsibility of leading the Israelites in the conquest of the Promised Land. He would face setbacks and at least one military defeat.

    No wonder Joshua needed to be encouraged and strengthened! 

    So let us personally encourage elders, including circuit overseers, who work hard to care for the flock of God.

    Até os que já servem a Jeová por muitos anos precisam de encorajamento. Um exemplo que encontramos na Bíblia é Josué. Ele tinha servido a Deus fielmente por muitos anos. Ainda assim, Jeová achou que era importante encorajá-lo. Jeová disse a Moisés: “Designe Josué como líder, encoraje-o e fortaleça-o, porque é ele quem atravessará diante deste povo e é ele quem os fará herdar a terra que você verá.”

    Jeová sabia que Josué estava para assumir uma pesada responsabilidade: ser o líder dos israelitas nas batalhas para conquistar a Terra Prometida. E, como sabemos, Josué enfrentou dificuldades, e pelo menos uma vez seus soldados foram derrotados.

    Desde 1919, o Rei Jesus Cristo está usando o ‘escravo fiel’ para ajudar seus discípulos a entender a Palavra de Deus e seguir os conselhos dela. Se obedecermos às instruções da Bíblia, vamos contribuir para que a congregação seja limpa e tenha paz e união.

    CADA UM DE NÓS DEVE SE PERGUNTAR: 
    ‘Será que sou leal a Jesus por obedecer às orientações do escravo fiel?’ 

    A Bíblia nos ajuda a entender melhor a parte celestial da organização de Jeová. Por exemplo, o profeta Ezequiel teve uma visão: ele viu o carro celestial de Jeová. Esse carro representa a parte celestial da organização de Jeová.
