Tacca chantrieri, the black bat flower, is a species of flowering plant in the yam family Dioscoreaceae. Tacca chantrieri is an unusual plant in that it has black flowers. These flowers are somewhat bat-shaped, are up to 12 inches across, and have long ‘whiskers’ that can grow up to 28 inches. Tacca chantrierei is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, and southern China: particularly Yunnan Province. They are understory plants, so they prefer shade (at least 60%). They grow best in well-drained soil with good air circulation, but they prefer high humidity, and need a lot of water. They are hardy to USDA zones 11, above 4.5 °C (40 °F).

Victim of gay conversion therapy: A young lesbian tells her harrowing story of being tortured and abused while being held captive in an unlicensed “residential treatment program” run by Mormons.
In a new book titled Saving Alex: When I Was Fifteen I Told My Mormon Parents I Was Gay, and That’s When My Nightmare Began Alex Cooper, a former Mormon, offers a terrifying account of being held hostage for eight months in an unlicensed “residential treatment program” modeled on the many “therapeutic” boot camps scattered across Utah.
At the Mormon run “treatment center” Alex was physically and verbally abused. Many days she was forced to stand facing a wall wearing a heavy backpack full of rocks. She developed sores on her shoulders and cramps in her back. She eventually attempted suicide and repeatedly tried to escape, but when she was caught, the Mormons running the center beat her. About one such experience Alex writes:
I came to my feet in front of him. He made a fist and punched me in the gut, knocking the wind out of me. I doubled over and choked for breath.
She was 15 at the time.
About her experience at the center, Alex says:
I felt angry, indignant, determined to find a way out. Then the loneliness settled in.
Alex, who was raised a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, describes her experience as “exhausting and humiliating.”
In a recent interview with 2News, Alex spoke about the futility of gay conversion therapy, noting:
It’s like sending you to therapy to change your eye color. It’s not going to work. What it’s going to do is damage you.
Ultimately, the story has a happy ending. With the help of a dedicated legal team in Salt Lake City, Alex eventually escaped the draconian treatment center, and made legal history in Utah by winning the right to live under the law’s protection as an openly gay teenager.
Alex reports that since escaping the horrendous abuse at the hands of her Mormon captors, her mother has apologized for placing her in the abusive situation. Alex said:
They thought they were doing the best thing for me. I think that’s what a lot of parents are under the impression of, that they’re doing the best thing for their child.
As one might hope, Alex says she is no longer a practicing member of the Mormon faith.

Our faithful sister, Arita, can no longer attend our meetings due to MS. However, she still actively participates as much as she can in the ministry through informal witnessing, and she even has meeting parts which are recorded at her home and then played for us at the hall. She is a wonderful example of love and zeal for Jehovah. We love her very much! Photo shared by @joshncynthia

Bible bonfire: ISIS video shows Christian books being destroyed, adds fuel to genocide debate

Having driven the last Christian out of Mosul, ISIS has now released a chilling video showing a bonfire consuming a huge pile of Bibles and other Christian literature.
The video, entitled “Diwan of education destroys Christian instruction books in Mosul,” was made by ISIS’ “morality police,” the infamous Diwan Al-Hisbah, according to Christian Today. It comes as the U.S. is deliberating over whether to label the terrorist group’s actions in Iraq as genocide, a term that has important ramifications under international law.
“It’s another example that ISIS means what they say,” David Curry, CEO of Open Doors USA, told FoxNews.com. “That’s what makes the debate so powerful. They want elimination and they are very serious.”
While ISIS has killed, enslaved and displaced hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians, the destruction of religious materials could also be part of a genocide determination.
The House voted unanimously Monday to approve a resolution branding ISIS’ actions as genocide, which the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide defines in part as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.”
