  3. The 58th Annual Grammy Awards are held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. A Grammy Award (originally called Gramophone Award), or Grammy, is an accolade by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the mainly English-language music industry. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and the presentation of those awards that have a more popular interest. It shares recognition of the music industry as that of the other performance arts: Emmy Awards (television), the Tony Awards (stage performance), and the Academy Awards (motion pictures). The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, to honor the musical accomplishments by performers for the year 1958. Following the 2011 ceremony, NARAS overhauled many Grammy Award categories for 2012. The 57th Grammy Awards was held on February 8, 2015, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
  4. BOISE - The Senate Health and Welfare Committee may soon consider a bill that would amend religious exemptions for faith healing, but not take them all away. Parents would continue to have the right to refuse vaccinations or extraordinary care for their children. However, if a child's life is at serious risk, medical help would be required by law. A panel was held Thursday at the Statehouse to discuss the injury to child law on the books. Mariah Walton spoke at the panel. The 20-year-old grew up in a religion that believes in faith healing over medical care. "I would wake up with severe headaches," explained Walton. "I would cry for hours and my parents ignored it. I would be very short of breath and my lungs would hurt." Walton is now awaiting a heart and double lung transplant. Doctor's say her congenital heart defect could have been easily fixed at birth, but going untreated for 18 years has left her in a life-threatening position. "We don't feel this is an issue that needs to be addressed in Idaho this year," said Sen. Lee Heider, chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee. "Let them worship how, where and what they may. I don't have a concern about other people's beliefs. You know, it's a first amendment right... the freedom of religion." Although he believes Idaho's religious exemptions are not a problem, Heider has said if a bill comes forward addressing faith healing he would take it seriously and hold a hearing. Now, a bill is sitting on his desk. "It's pretty simple really," said Rep. John Gannon, who is co-sponsoring the bill. "It's designed to require treatment for a child if a child is in imminent danger of dying." The Idaho Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is also sponsoring the bill. "The exemption is still there for religious belief," explained Gannon. "You don't have to vaccinate or give aspirin. "It's really if there's something extraordinarily serious going on." Gannon says he's surprised there has been so much controversy around changing the injury to child law. Because many child deaths could be prevented with medicine like antibiotics or insulin, it should be something everyone can agree on, he said. Governor Butch Otter recently voiced concern about children dying in the state because their parents choose prayer over medical care. He has asked for a legislative committee to be formed to look at the religious exemptions in Idaho. Make sure to watch the News at 10 on Thursday for a special 7 Investigates report on faith healing in Idaho.

  7. A former public elementary school teacher who is a Jehovah’s Witness has filed a lawsuit against the suburban Detroit school district where she used to work because, she claims, school officials ordered her to organize a classroom Valentine’s Day party and then sacked her because she refused. People who belong to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a millenarian Christian sect, do not celebrate Valentine’s Day. Thus, the teacher, Yvonne Lemmons, is suing for religious discrimination reports Michigan Live. The defendant in the lawsuit is the Southfield Public School District in Southfield, Mich. Lemmons, 56, says in her lawsuit that she had been a fourth-grade teacher at MacArthur University Academy, a public magnet school, for 10 years and had faced no issues concerning her religious beliefs prior to the Valentine’s Day party kerfuffle. “She’s really a good woman devoted to teaching students,” Kathy Bogas, an attorney representing Lemmons, told Michigan Live. “Her abilities were never questioned until she challenged this directive.” According to the lawsuit, on Feb. 12, 2014 — a Wednesday — the principal at MacArthur University Academy instructed Lemmons to throw an in-class Valentine’s Day party. Lemmons refused, citing her status as a Jehovah’s Witness. In the past, Bogas noted, parents of the students in Lemmons’s classes organized Valentine’s Day parties. It’s not clear what was different about 2014. The lawsuit doesn’t say, and the school district would not comment on the lawsuit. In any case, Lemmons did not show up for work on the day of the party — presumably Friday, Feb. 14, 2014. Then, in June 2014, she was sacked. Lemmons believes her dismissal is directly related to her refusal to organize be any part of the Valentine’s Day party. “Defendant rejected all the Plaintiff’s suggestions that would have permitted students to have a holiday celebration without Plaintiff violating her religious beliefs,” the teacher’s court pleading states. Lemmons and her attorneys argue that the school district’s refusal to accommodate her genuine religious belief and her subsequent job loss amount to illegal religious discrimination. The lawsuit lists no specific dollar amount. Lemmons has found work at an unnamed charter school since she was laid off. Jehovah’s Witnesses object to Valentine’s Day because they seek a restoration of their notion of first-century Christianity. Valentine’s Day involves Cupid — the Greek god of erotic love — and one or more possibly martyred, third-century Roman saints named Valentinus. Other holidays that Jehovah’s Witnesses spurn include Halloween. There’s no love for the Easter Bunny, either, because said bunny is, of course, a rabbit, and thus “a pagan symbol and has always been an emblem of fertility,” according to the official Jehovah’s Witnesses website It’s not clear how Lemmons handled Halloween parties in her classroom, if they occurred. The Jehovah’s Witnesses website JW.org that there are 8,220,105 Jehovah’s Witnesses in the world. This figure includes Prince. The Notorious B.I.G. and President Dwight D. Eisenhower were reportedly raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses. http://dailycaller.com/2016/01/25/suit-teacher-sacked-for-not-throwing-valentines-day-party/#ixzz4098jXth9
  8. Most people would agree that love is complicated, but thanks to science, it’s just gotten a whole lot more complicated. Before you buy your valentine chocolate or flowers, you might consider undergoing a DNA test to figure out whether or not you’re wasting your together. An online company professes that it can determine a couple’s compatibility based on a swab of saliva. Toronto-based startup Instant Chemistry offers couples an at-home DNA test kit to help them understand if their relationship is designed to last. Photo credit: Shutterstock CBSDFW-TV conducted an consumer study with two couples to see if the company’s claims were true. Max and Donna Feuchter, married for 32 years, were pretty confident that their results would confirm what they’ve known all along: they were meant for each other. Recently engaged Chelsea Fehringer and Brian Hudson were pretty confident as well, but the results of their test might prove more intriguing as the two had less time on their side. When asked prior to taking the test why he and his wife have stayed together so long, Max Feuchter offered a simple answer: “I have no idea. It just works.” Fehringer shared that, for Brian and her, love really wasn’t all that complicated. “We knew fairly early that this was something special,” she said. To start, each couple took a short personality test to determine psychocompatibility, according to Instant Chemistry. Then, they spat into test tubes and sent their DNA away to the Instant Chemistry Lab, where their serotonin dopamine and oxytocin was tested. Each of the tests assessed how a person reacts in an emotionally taxing situation and handles stress. The company also claims the DNA test can determine how physically attracted each partner is to the other by studying a gene called HLA. The Feuchters scored 80 percent on their compatibility score. “I guess that’s why we been together so long,” laughed Donna Feuchter. Fehringer and Hudson scored a 77 percent compatibility score. “The wedding is still on,” Hudson joked. Instant Chemistry’s tests cost $149 per couple and results take about a week to receive. The results consist of a compatibility score and a love manual that analyzes personality and DNA. Each couple said certain descriptions in the manual were completely accurate. “It said my personality was good for a stressful job where I have to make decisions and can’t second-guess,” Fehringer, a producer at CBSDFW-TV, said. But the results weren’t perfect. “I don’t think I experience high stress levels,” Feuchter said. Both pairs said that they enjoyed unmasking the mystery and learn more about each other, but all agreed that the stakes should never be that hi. The people at Instant Chemistry agree that the experience should be as the couples described and should never dictate a breakup. The company told CBSDFW-TV that it plans to launch a dating site next fall that will allow clients to use their own DNA to get a date. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2016/02/14/dna-dating-how-some-couples-are-determining-whether-or-not-their-relationship-is-destined-for-success/?utm_source=TheBlaze.com&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=story&utm_content=dna-dating-how-some-couples-are-determining-whether-or-not-their-relationship-is-destined-for-success
