how would there be peace among animals if some were going to be eaten?

    Hi Anna,
I appreciate this question. Predation actually contributes to ecosystem stability, playing a critical role. Viewed this way, predation then contributes to the overall "peace among animals."

See for instance this article by Dr. Fazale Rana, an old-earth creationist biochemist:
    Animal Death Prevents Ecological Meltdown

What is the scriptural authority for contradicting Genesis 1: 29,30?  Jesus was a Master Worker with God and he saw and knew everything but he said "It is written".

"That the interpretation that all animals were created as herbivorous is no longer held." BY whom?

Gen 1:29 specifies vegetation for humans. Gen 1:30 is not stated as directly for animals who also ate carrion when Gen 1:30 was declared. Thus, it is not declaring that all animals were created as herbivorous. Stating otherwise, that it does, is a misinterpretation.

"BY whom?" The Governing Body. They used to teach that all animals were created as herbivorous. Apparently, not any more. Hurray!!! That's progress.

  3. There were no problems in the ark because they were separated in cages. Also, one Watchtower said:

    Quote

    *** w13 8/1 p. 14 He Was Kept “Safe With Seven Others” ***
Some have raised the possibility that God kept the animals in a state of relative torpor, akin to hibernation, thus reducing their need for food.

Also, any hypothetical carnivores on board did not require their same degree of energy in the ark that they needed on land. So any fodder given to them must have been satisfying before falling into a state of relative torpor.

At the convention today there was mention of certain behavioral characteristics that animals have which help them survive. Some of these are instincts which protect them from predators. These behaviours are atributed to Jehovah's creative wisdom. However, this is obviously at odds with the idea that animals were created not to eat each other. How does one reconcile these two opposing ideas?

That the interpretation that all animals were created as herbivorous is no longer held.

Take the T-Rex... it's eyes are on the side of its head.  Plant eaters usually have their eyes on the side of their head.  Predators on the other hand have their eyes looking forward so they can focus on the prey.

    Hi Arauna,

Actually the T. rex had eyes on the front of its head, having binocular vision. Additionally, a T. rex's tooth was found embedded within a hadrosaur's vertebrae, and a coprolite that matches with T. rex had bone fragments in it. (See footnotes 2 and 5 of my article On Predatory Dinosaurs http://jimspace3000.blogspot.com/2013/09/on-predatory-dinosaurs-faunal-predation.html.)

  6. Jehovah created predation as well as prey with defenses against predators. Predators using poison then to kill their prey is really a reflection of Jehovah's endearing engineering.  Also, Genesis 1:30 does not teach that all animals were created as herbivorous, as that is a common misunderstanding. Additionally, God did not alter the fauna after Adam's sin or after the Deluge to function within a predator-prey dichotomy--as there are no scriptures stating that, and which could even be seen as a contradiction of Jehovah resting from creation.
