Tesla lowers price of Model S, X 100D by $3,500 and P100D by $5,000

Tesla has lowered the price of its 100D and P100D variant for the Model S and Model X.

The base price of the Model S 100D with 100 kWh battery pack has been dropped by $3,500, from $97,500 to $94,000, while the company’s flagship Model S P100D with Ludicrous received a larger $5,000 price reduction. A Ludicrous Tesla Model S P100D now starts at a base price of $135,000.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s Model X SUV also received the same price reduction of $3,500 and $5,000 for the 100D and P100D, respectively. A base Tesla Model X 100D will begin at $96,000, while the record-setting Ludicrous Model X P100D, which recently embarrassed a rare $530k Lamborghini supercar in a drag race, will start at $140,000.

The price reduction is reflected in Tesla’s online configurator for both vehicles, and will apply to new buyers as well as existing 100D/P100D buyers that have yet to take delivery of their vehicles.

This latest price drop follows a recent $3,000 reduction on the Model X 75D. Tesla said in a statement earlier this month that they were able to achieve better margins and pass along any savings to their customers.

“When we launched Model X 75D, it had a low gross margin. As we’ve achieved efficiencies, we are able to lower the price and pass along more value to our customers,” said Tesla.

Today’s price drop is a signal that Tesla could have improved efficiencies related to the production of the 100 kWh battery pack used in the 100D and P100D.

As Tesla’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada continues to leverage economies of scale to reduce the cost of lithium ion battery cell production at its giant battery factory, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the base price of its vehicles continues to decrease over the next several months.
