  1. PORT ORCHARD — The youngest victim in the deadly Wednesday evening shooting in downtown Seattle was a 9-year-old Port Orchard boy.

The boy, named Judah, was reported to be recovering from surgery to repair a fractured left leg, according to a report by KOMO News this morning.

Seattle Police were continuing their search for two of the three gunmen who reportedly opened fire near a busy Third Avenue and Pine Street intersection filled with commuters heading home. A woman was killed in the crossfire and seven were injured. One of the gunmen is in custody, according to police.

In the KOMO News report, a family friend of the boy, Erik Larson, said the youngster had been to Seattle for a visit to the Pacific Science Center with family and friends from Port Orchard. The family, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses, had been looking at sidewalk displays and literature about their faith, and were heading down Third Avenue toward Colman Dock to catch a westbound ferry when the gunfire erupted

Larson told KOMO News that the family was next to the McDonald’s restaurant when the chaos unleashed. “Tragically, the woman that ended up killed was on the pavement not far from where they were struck,” Larson said. “It’s really near-miraculous that none of the other nine in their contingent was impacted.”

The family friend said paramedics quickly responded to the scene.

“He held it together,” Larson said of young Judah. “In fact, one of the police officers mentioned that he wasn’t even crying when she responded.”

The Port Orchard boy and the other victims were taken to Harborview Medical Center, the region’s primary trauma center, where x-rays were taken of his left leg that was hit by a bullet. It was shown Judah had a fracture. He was taken into surgery Thursday morning and the fractured bone was repaired using a plate and screws.

Larson told KOMO News that Judah could possibly head back home to Port Orchard today.

“He’s not going to let [the shooting] deter him or detract him from moving ahead.”

  2. An 89-year-old former maths teacher faces up to ten years in a Russian prison on charges of religious extremism in a crackdown on Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Russia outlawed the evangelical Christian group in 2017, categorising it as extremist and on a par with Islamic State and neo-Nazi movements.

Nine Jehovah’s Witnesses were jailed last year after being arrested while leading or organising prayer meetings.

They were jailed for between two and six years. More than 30 others have spent at least six months in detention.

Rimma Vashchenko, born in 1930, is one of eight other residents of Nevinnomyssk, a city in south Russia, who were charged with extremism after raids on Bible study groups by armed police. Four are in their seventies.

I couldn't insert the tweet but it says:

A close family friend of the 9-year-old boy who was wounded in yesterday’s downtown shooting says his left femur is shattered, but the boy is remarkably poised and positive. “He has never cried once,” he told us. The boy was on an outing w/ a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

  5. A citizen of the United States and an Indonesian national have been arrested by the Telanaipura Police in Jambi for allegedly spreading the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Simpang Empat Sipin subdistrict of Jambi city.

“The arrest was made based on reports from residents who were concerned by the individuals’ activities in the neighborhood,” Telanaipura Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yumika Putra said on Wednesday.

Both the US and the Indonesian citizens, identified only by the initials J and L, respectively, were currently detained and being questioned regarding their religious activities, he said. The Jambi Police had also assisted in making sure whether the detainees had actually violated any existing laws, he added.

During the preliminary questioning, J admitted to having lived in Jambi city for three years. The police had cooperated with the Jambi Immigration Office to look into J's stay permit.

Waluyo, a local, said the J and L had given out pamphlets, brochures and books on the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses from door to door in the neighborhood. They also recommended residents visit the official website of the Jehovah’s Witnesses at jw.org.

“Of course we grew concerned. This is a Muslim-majority neighborhood. What if there’s a conflict with local residents?” Waluyo said to The Jakarta Post.

  6. Think about all the people who have riches and yet they don’t have the time to sit down with their family to enjoy a meal.  This is nothing new, even in Solomon’s time  this was an issue. That is why he wrote the scripture at proverbs 15:17. We shouldn’t imitate the world that prioritizes wealth, entertainment and material possessions over spending time with family in a loving atmosphere.

It is not about what we are eating at the dinner table, but who we are eating with. It is not about how fancy the setting is where we share a meal, but about filling that setting with love.

  8. MOSCOW (Reuters) - A court in the Russian Far East on Tuesday handed a six-year suspended jail sentence to a Jehovah’s Witness, Grigoriy Bubnov, after finding him guilty of extremist activity, a spokesman for the religious group said.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have been under pressure for years in Russia, where the dominant Orthodox Church is championed by President Vladimir Putin. Orthodox scholars have cast them as a dangerous foreign sect that erodes state institutions and traditional values, allegations they reject.

Russia’s Supreme Court ruled in 2017 that the group was an “extremist” organization and ordered it to disband, a decision that was followed by a crackdown which has seen dozens of adherents detained and hundreds hit with criminal charges.

  9. The United States has confirmed the first case of the new coronavirus on its territory.

The Centers for Disease Control said the virus, which originated in China, had been diagnosed in a US resident who arrived in Seattle from China.

The virus, which spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan, has infected almost 300 people, and six have died.

North Korea has temporarily closed its borders to foreign tourists in response to the threat, a tour operator says.

The patient diagnosed in the US - reported to be a man in his 30s - returned from Wuhan on 15 January, the CDC said.

"The patient sought care at a medical facility in the state of Washington, where the patient was treated for the illness," it added in a statement.

"Based on the patient's travel history and symptoms, healthcare professionals suspected this new coronavirus."

Laboratory testing of a clinical specimen confirmed the diagnosis on 20 January, the CDC statement continued.

  10. FARGO, N.D. (KVLY) A south Fargo man took to the Nextdoor app after he says a woman claiming to be a Jehovah's Witness knocked on his apartment door Sunday night. It all happened in the 2300 block of 30 1/2 Ave. S.

The man didn't want to talk with us on camera today, but he tells our reporter the woman claimed her name was Stephanie, and that she wanted to share the word of God. The man says when he looked through his peephole he saw the woman had empty hands.

The man says he didn't open the door as he didn't know how she got in his building without buzzing for access, and didn't know if she actually was part of the religion or not. He says after lingering outside his door for about 10 minutes, the woman left.

And while door knocking is no unfamiliar task for the Jehovah's Witness, it wasn't something members were doing last night.

Fargo Jehovah's Witness member, Guy Howie says it's unusual to find a member at your door without an iPad, meeting invitation or bible reading in their hands. He also says members usually travel in twos when knocking through neighborhoods.

Howie says Jehovah's Witnesses don't go into secure buildings unless they're buzzed in. He says if one does end up at your apartment door, you'll see or hear other members on your floor trying your neighbors as well.

With motives unknown, Howie says an incident like this is concerning, but says it's not the first time he's heard something like this happening.

He says Jehovah's Witnesses are not dishonest people and only come to your door to share a message of good news. Howie added members of the religion will never ask you for money.

Fargo Police say they haven't heard of any incidents like this recently, but they also urge you to report any suspicious activity by calling dispatch at 701-451-7660.

  11. Cheryl Pitts was having trouble breathing, could barely walk and her skin was turning gray. She needed heart surgery, but her choice of hospitals was limited.

A Jehovah’s Witness, Pitts couldn’t accept a blood transfusions or other treatment with blood products because of her religious beliefs.

In need of a bloodless surgery, the 64-year-old Portsmouth woman decided to go to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center — one of seven Ohio hospitals that offer blood alternative solutions to adults.

“I just can’t handle the thought of having to take blood,” Pitts said. “Even before I became a Jehovah’s Witness, I would not take blood.”

She didn’t trust receiving blood because of the possible complications that come with blood transfusions.

Blood transfusions replace blood that is lost through surgery or injury or if a person’s body is not making blood properly. Though generally considered safe, there is some risk of complications and allergic reactions, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In central Ohio, only Grant Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital have a blood conservation program that uses methods to limit blood loss during surgery and provides blood alternatives to people who don’t want to do transfusions for religious reasons or safety concerns.
