  1. @Srecko Sostar Since we do not have "Threaded replies" capability on this forum, I would ask each member that if they want to go down a seperate fork / line of reasoning to start a new thread where such can be discussed. Sorry for this but it is necessary unless you all want to soon start talking about fungal infections on this thread.  . Here is the fork I split off for you to discuss it: p.s. - other members can assist by responding @Gone Away to such rabbit holes by starting a new topic referencing the one in which the new topic arose. p.s.s. - In order to make it easier on all of us... instead of posting endless links to bible quotes on biblehub etc.. please post the scripture in its entirety. @JOHN BUTLERÂ
  2. So... a quick question to educate me (and others) Why are they ALL wearing orange robes of some sort? The robes appear to be of the same color that buddhist monks use. If the color is just a choice of personal style... then why are they ALL wearing the same choice?

  4. I'm sure we are all interested in the welfare of our Brothers and Sisters in the area:
  5. Moral of the story: Don't date non JW men and you won't end up in their fire pit. Or Always use the New World Translation of the scriptures using the name "Jehovah" ... it might help lead relatives to where your bones are buried. Or....
  6. Thanks for remembering!! I am glad to say that it is all still there. http://www.jw-archive.org/ I thought Tumblr platform that it was built on was going to disappear awhile back but it is still running. I think Google has it's own agenda though. I remember someone saying that Watchtower pays Google to suppress certain websites in searches. Google only indexes a portion of many websites and has really deteriorated in search over the years. They themselves want to be the "aggregator" of content for people instead of leading people to the sources. I think the search world is ripe for disruption soon.
  7. Well.. at least a few remember it. I guess we normally didn't take photos at such events. It's not like we had cell phones with cameras back then. How time flies by.... Not many people will remember such times (even less as the next 30 years flies by) I know the @admin hates "Link Rot" but I can only imagine how in 30 years all of these websites and even jw.org will be gone just like many of the early internet conversations are rarely ever seen or indexed by Google. (that is if they even exist at all anymore) Listserv Google Groups Yahoo forums (I can't remember what they used to be called) . Maybe Yahoo 360? Or even the huge email conversations we used to have and exchange on certain topics.... All gone..... Maybe that is why I like Books so much?
  8. Seems like yesterday.... how time flies... The connection with NYC used to be so strong as you can hear in this audio. How quickly we vanished from that Metropolis.
  9. Fred Rogers/Quotes When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood. Knowing that we can be loved exactly as we are gives us all the best opportunity for growing into the healthiest of people. How sad it is that we give up on people who are just like us. Parents are like shuttles on a loom. They join the threads of the past with threads of the future and leave their own bright patterns as they go. I think of discipline as the continual everyday process of helping a child learn self-discipline.
  10. Jehovah's Witnesses were not fond of letting their children watch Mr. Rogers back in the day since there was a rumor he was a reverend or priest of some denomination. Anyone remember more details about this? Maybe @JW Insider?

  13. Three years after Erik Miranda was shot and killed early on a Sunday morning, the crime that remains unsolved, denying his family what they want most: closure. Family members held a lantern vigil Thursday, Sept. 20 — the anniversary of the 24-year-old's death — at Kiwanis Lake. York City Police officers responding to reports of shots fired just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2015, found Miranda's body in an alleyway in the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue, where he lived with his mother. Family members described him as a kind, caring man who was a devoted Jehovah's Witness. They said he had no enemies, which makes the homicide even more difficult to understand. On Thursday, the family prayed together and released a handful of biodegradable lanterns into the sky above the lake to show they won't forget Miranda — or the unknown killer who remains free. Olga Davis, Miranda's cousin, said his mother, Maria Miranda, moved to Florida shortly after his death because she "couldn't stand it to live here anymore" after the pain of losing her son. She hasn't returned since, and she wasn't present at the vigil Thursday night. "I'm a mother, and if something happened to one of my babies like that, I don't know how I'd push on," Davis said. "It's a kick in the stomach; I can't breathe. I can't rest at night knowing his killers are still out there, breathing and walking around, not paying for the injustice that's been done to us." Jack Padro, Miranda's brother, said he wishes he could thank him for all that he did for him. He said he still struggles to suppress anger and negative frustration. "I was always with him," Padro said. "He was a good person and helped me through the hard times. But now I can't even say thank you to him anymore." The family still lives around the corner from where the shooting happened. Every year, the they meet at the scene to celebrate Miranda's life. Davis praised York City Police for making arrests in recent shootings, but notes the status of her cousin's case. "The police have been doing a great job tracking the current shooters doing all these terrible things in York, but Erik's case is still cold," she said. Davis also praised local community organizations for their efforts to stop gun violence, but added the community is doing less to help grieving families such as hers. Raul Miranda, left, and Olga Davis watch lanterns float over Kiwanis Lake in memory of Erick Miranda, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018. Miranda was murdered Sept. 20, 2015 in a drive-by shooting. His case is one of only a few cold cases in York City. John A. Pavoncello photo (Photo: The York Dispatch) "I don't know what can be done to stop it, and I don't know how they're going to stop it," Davis said. "York is just tired. We're sick of shootings; we're afraid to walk to the store." Although Davis said knowing who the killer is won't take all of the pain away, it is the closest thing to closure the family can hope for. York City Police Chief Troy Bankert explained in an email the process of handling unsolved homicide case. "Homicides do not have statute of limitations, therefore they remain open," the chief said. "When a homicide is unsolved, we review the case as needed. However, typically, new evidence is presented which is then immediately followed up on. We do the initial investigation until all evidence is reviewed and all witnesses are questioned." Anyone with information is asked to call police at 717-846-1234 or text "yorktips" and then the message to 847411. https://www.yorkdispatch.com/story/news/local/2018/09/21/three-years-day-since-unsolved-killing-york-family-holds-vigil-erik-miranda/1371116002/
  14. The Finnish government has ruled that the current law allowing Jehovah's Witnesses to avoid military service, in place for several decades, is discriminatory and contradicts the constitution. In the future, Finnish Jehovah's Witnesses* will be obliged to either serve in the nation's military or perform civil service on the same terms as everyone else, the government ruled, submitting a corresponding proposal to parliament, national broadcaster Yle reported. According to the 1987 law, Jehovah's Witnesses were not only freed from the military draft, they were freed of any obligation to perform community service as a pacifist alternative, a common option among other young people in Finland. The Finnish government has decided that this preferential treatment is discriminatory and contradicts the constitution. Repealing the law will allow all religious groups to get equal treatment in terms of conscription, the government's press release said. The government proposed a three-month transition period. Those applying for suspension within the three-month period before the new law enters into force shall be allowed to skip military service. After the transition period, exemptions will be no longer granted. Abolishing the Jehovah's Witnesses' draft exemption has been considered several times before, in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2013, but nothing came of the discussions. However, the debate was re-kindled this year, when the Helsinki Supreme Court overruled a prison sentence against a conscientious objector who refused to perform community service. The court found it discriminatory to sentence a conscientious objector, when Jehovah's Witnesses don't need to do any military or community service whatsoever. "Today we have a kind of two-storied definition of personal convictions. Jehovah's Witnesses enjoy statutory liberation from military service, while others with pacifist convictions don't," former Defense Minister Stefan Wallin, who has long pushed for the abolition of differential treatment, explained. Veikko Leinonen, a Jehovah's Witnesses information officer in Finland, said this isn't a "working solution." "It's problematic. The belief the Jehovah's Witnesses follow opposes all forms of war and killing," Leinonen stressed. "Ideally, we should keep the system that exists today. It has worked well and does not violate anyone's rights," he added. This move is expected to cover some 130 people annually. According to Teemu Penttilä, the leader of the task force behind the investigation, the number of "total objectors" refusing both military service and community service won't rise significantly. In 2017, 33 conscientious objectors were sentenced in Finland. The Finnish Defense Forces operate on the principle of universal male conscription, although women are allowed to volunteer and have been availing themselves of this opportunity increasingly. With a peacetime strength of about 16,000 troops, Finland is capable of mobilizing up to 230,000 troops and service personnel within four weeks, making it the largest force in Scandinavia. The total number of Jehovah's Witnesses is estimated at about 20,000 in Finland. * Jehovah's Witnesses are banned in Russia https://sputniknews.com/europe/201809211068220658-finland-jehovah-witnesses-army/
