Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded on Twitter Friday to claims that he gave an assistant a two-week test before firing her after over a decade with the company. The claims, which were part of the Ashlee Vance’s book “Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future,” detail an exchange between Musk and his longtime assistant where he gave her a two week vacation after she asked for a raise. Musk had agreed that he would give her the raise after two weeks of him doing her job, so he could assess how valuable she was to the company. Tesla and Musk seem to be the center of controversy these days. As the company seeks funding through a $1.5 billion …

A Hewlett-Packard supercomputer will be launched from the International Space Station aboard SpaceX’s Monday resupply mission for NASA. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will take the computer, aptly named “Spaceborne Computer,” as a part of a year-long experiment conducted by NASA and Hewlett-Packard Enterprises. The goal of the experiment is to analyze “if high performance computing hardware, with no hardware customization or modification, can survive and operate in outer space conditions” for an entire year, according to TechCrunch. The outlet points out that the experiment’s length of time is roughly equal to the time it’ll take for a crewed spacecraft to reach Mars. “Thi…

As Tesla seeks to help fund its Model 3 ramp up through a $1.5 billion bond offering, some investors are skeptical of how risky the investment could be. MarketWatch cited market sources that said the bond is to be “whispered at a coupon” of 5.25 percent. “Anyone who looks at a lot of high-yield bonds would expect more robust protection against future debt,” said Valerie Potenza, head of high-yield research at Xtract Research, told the outlet. “We think it’s a terrible bond, but people seem blinded by the Tesla story.” Moody’s Investors service note indicated, however, that Tesla is facing “sizable near-term credit risks,” listing it is a “junk” credit profile. A “ju…

With the frenzied excitement over Model 3 beginning to level out, buzz and fanfare will soon emerge for TeslaÂ’s second installment in its line of SUVs – Model Y. Chief Elon Musk recently confirmed that the compact electric crossover will be built on the same chassis and underpinnings of the Model 3. While details of the Model Y have remained light, Tesla did share a silhouetted view of the vehicle earlier in the year. Shape and styling of the compact SUV is left to oneÂ’s imagination. That is until a new Model Y rendering by AutoExpress surfaced that provides a comprehensive look at what a Model 3-based SUV just might look like. Tesla expects to begin p…

Blocking a key enzyme may reverse memory loss

In the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, many of the genes required to form new memories are shut down by a genetic blockade, contributing to the cognitive decline seen in those patients. MIT researchers have now shown that they can reverse that memory loss in mice by interfering with the enzyme that forms the blockade. The enzyme, known as HDAC2, turns genes off by condensing them so tightly that they can’t be expressed. For several years, scientists and pharmaceutical companies have been trying to develop drugs that block this enzyme, but most of these drugs also block other members of the HDAC family, which can lead to toxic side effects. The MIT team has now f…

Ahead of the 12th launch of a Cargo Dragon on August 14th, SpaceX conducted a successful static fire of the first stage of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle earlier this morning. While fans sadly did not receive the usual photo of the static fire, Core 1039 and its Dragon cargo will provide plenty of stunning visuals as they lift off on route to the International Space Station at 12:31 p.m. EST on Monday. As reported yesterday, CRS-12 will mark the the return to orbital flights for the United States. The last U.S. launch, SpaceXÂ’s Intelsat 35e mission, occurred on July 5th after a handful of scrubs due to difficulties with the rocket. According to Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith…
