As more Tesla employees and their family members are being invited to configure their Model 3, the California-based electric carmaker is gearing up to open up its online design studio to non-employees in early October. Moreover, a source tells Teslarati that Model 3 production is ahead of forecasts and early reservation holders will soon be asked to configure their Model 3, depending on their vehicle configuration preferences. Tesla first rolled out its Model 3 online configurator to company employees the day after CEO Elon Musk handed over the first 30 production vehicles to their new owners at an event held at the Fremont factory in late July. The Model 3 event…

Over the past year we have been celebrating 70 years of the United Nations and indeed, there is much to be proud of and grateful for. Over the past year alone, Member States adopted an ambitious development agenda – Agenda 2030 – as well as the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change, a process in which I was honoured to play a role. These agreements demonstrate, once again, the power and the value of the UN when its Member States are united in purpose. At the same time, the world is facing complex challenges that the UN’s founders could have scarcely imagined 70 years ago. As our societies have grown more interconnected, so have our problems. The global…

Tesla’s Powerpack is helping a water treatment facility provide clean drinking water in Australia

A Tesla Powerpack system is helping a remote water treatment facility in Queensland, Australia, provide safe drinking water 24 hours a day to roughly 200,000 people in the region, while using solar-generated power. The water reservoir, built in Logan and just south of Brisbane, is located in a remote area that’s difficult to connect to local utilities. Using a 95 kWh Tesla Powerpack system combined with 323 solar panels, the Logan Water Infrastructure Alliance with solar installer CSR Bradford was able to create a micro-grid that chlorinates a water reservoir and provide safe drinking water to nearby residents in Flagstone, Yarrabilba, North Maclean, Spring Mountain and …

Activist Investor

What is it An activist investor is an individual or company that invests money in another company it believes could be performing better. The activist then attempts to make a major change to the company through tactics like influencing shareholders and obtaining board seats. With any luck, it turns that investment into a healthy return by helping the company operate more efficiently. Why it’s important This is a strategy increasingly used by outspoken hedge funds and hedge fund managers. Nelson Peltz (of Trian Fund Management) is trying to make significant changes at Procter & Gamble. And Mick McGuire (of Marcato Capital) was successful at removing Buf…

The results are in from over 100,000 respondents that used the Tesla Model 3 monthly cost calculator by Ben Sullins. Data gleaned from users that estimated their vehicle cost based on paint color, wheel selection, premium upgrades packages, and Autopilot, suggests that the Tesla Model 3 will cost $900 per month on average. Beyond computing Model 3Â’s monthly cost from user selected vehicle options, the cost estimator also factors in driving style, oneÂ’s daily commute distance, energy costs from charging, as well as insurance and loan terms. The comprehensive analysis by Sullins of Teslanomics provides arguably the most accurate assessment to date on what the…

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is finishing up the third round of NAFTA negotiations alongside counterparts from Mexico and Canada. They’re talking cars. Right now, a law known as the “rules of origin” states that for a car produced in NAFTA countries, 62.5% of its total value must originate in those countries. BUT there aren’t any country-specific mandates. Expect the U.S., which feels like it’s getting stiffed in vehicle manufacturing, to demand a minimum level of U.S.-made parts.

Kohl's

It was a better day for Michelle Gass, who is set to take over for Kevin Mansell as Kohl’s (+0.13%) new CEO. She joined Kohl’s in 2013 after two impressive decades at Starbucks. Gass quickly took the reins of Kohl’s businesses in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa in addition to launching cost-cutting programs that will save the company $250 million over the next three years. It’s no daily business newsletter, but it is a pretty impressive resume. That said, Kohl’s shares are down 6.4% this year and Ms. Gass will be responsible for 1,100 stores and over $19 billion in annual revenue. Outgoing CEO Kevin Mansell believes she’s up to the task.

SpaceX and CEO Elon Musk may have to handle new regulations from the Federal Communications Commission and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) regarding the company’s plan to blanket the globe with internet coverage via thousands of satellites. The FCC voted 5-0 to defer regulations of SpaceX satellites to a UN agency called the ITU. The vote means that the ITU will play a major role in regulating the power, position and frequencies for SpaceX’s internet satellite constellation instead of the FCC. Also a problem for SpaceX is the ITU’s policy to operate on a first come, first serve basis, giving existing satellite operators like OneWeb and TeleSat who al…

Roughly two weeks ago, Teslarati reported that Tesla had committed to expanding its Supercharger network to the site of the world’s largest battery in Hornsdale, just outside of Jamestown in South Australia. In that time, Tesla has already set up four new Supercharger stations, extending the companyÂ’s fast-charging network along the southern coastal area some 520 miles (~840 kilometers). At the time of the announcement, the closest Supercharger to the worldÂ’s largest battery site was in Melbourne, an entire province away. Tesla has since added Superchargers in Ballarat, Horsham, Adelaide and Clare. Three more Superchargers are also currently under construction in Kei…

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently challenged Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s cautious view of AI development, saying that he did not think that AI poses a risk to the future of humanity. Gates told the Wall Street Journal that people should not buy Musk’s statements as our imminent fate. Instead, Gates advised that people should avoid panicking. “This is a case where Elon and I disagree,” he said. “The so-called control problem that Elon is worried about isn’t something that people should feel is imminent … We shouldn’t panic about it.” Musk has ardently warned about the potential dangers of unregulated AI development, voicing concerns that a race to artificial domin…

NASASpaceflight.com has reported that two SpaceX launches have slipped five days, with SES-11 and Iridium NEXT-3 respectively scheduled for launch on October 7th and 9th. Initially planned for October 2nd and 4th, the concurrent delays mean SpaceX will still attempt to conduct two launches within approximately 48 hours of each other. SpaceX’s next Eastern mission, Koreasat 5A, may be pushed back at least several days from its tentative October 14th launch date due to the aforementioned delays. SES-11 may be the last launch from the LC-39A launch facility for some time, requiring Koreasat 5A to launch from SpaceX’s second Eastern pad, LC-40. LC-39A needs a hiatus from…
