Of Course I Still Love, SpaceX’s East coast drone ship, docked in Port Canaveral earlier this morning with its Falcon 9 cargo in tow. It became apparent once it was within line of sight that this recovery marked the first use of SpaceX’s robotic stage securer, amicably deemed ‘Optimus Prime’ or ‘Roomba’ by fans following along. Following its successful reuse during the launch of BulgariaSat-1, Falcon 9 1029 landed hard aboard OCISLY in what was likely an experimental test of the recovery envelope. As demonstrated in striking photos from numerous journalists and fans documenting the port arrival, the stage has a pronounced lean due to the aluminum honeycomb ‘crush-cor…

Tesla had initially said solar tile installations would begin in June, but a spokesperson said the teams were still working out when that will occur, according to Inverse. “We do not have our first Solar Roof being installed on Friday,” a Tesla spokesperson said. The date came in a feature story from Bloomberg that detailed timelines on all of Elon Musk’s projects, ranging from SpaceX launches to Gigafactories. While the company has not released an official date, it seems clear that the rollout will occur within the next few months. The date dispute reflects the highly anticipated nature of Tesla’s new solar tiles. The tiles, which are made of tempered glass and fe…

With Tesla’s pre-sales for its Model 3 hitting over 400,000, it should come as no surprise that more and more competitors would look to get into the electric sedan business. The latest to join the fray is BMW. BMW is unveiling an electric version of its 3-Series line of cars at the Munich Auto Show in September, according to German news outlet Handelsblatt Global. The Handelsblatt article cites company sources saying that the vehicle will have a range of about 248 miles per charge, compared to Tesla’s 215 miles per charge. Source: BMW Media Group BMW shifted its strategy with plans for all of its current models to have an electric alternative offered, beginning wi…

A housing development in Nottingham, England, has pegged a 2MWh Tesla battery to store the facility’s sustainable energy, a move expected to drive down energy costs for homeowners by about 30 percent. Once installed, the battery will be the largest for renewable energy in Europe. The Trent Basin housing development, which is expected to be built for around $129.8 million, will feature 500 homes in five stages and will be completed by 2020. Should homeowners choose to opt into sustainability, 375kW rooftop or ground-based panels will be installed along with a Tesla battery for storage. Several buyers have already reserved spots or even purchased homes in the budd…

A new analysis by Teslanomics shows that the introduction of the Model 3 in 2017 will single-handedly result in a 40% increase in US EV sales this year. The substantial bump is based on the presumed 83,000 extra Model 3s that Teslanomics estimates will be produced in 2017. This number is based on an admittedly conservative production ramp versus the expected 6,000 cars produced per week by the end of 2017. The analysis utilizes the logarithmic curve Elon Musk mentioned when discussing the production ramp up but fails to take into account the expected full production ramp in 2018. A logarithmic curve peaking out at 10,000 cars per week in 2018 would feature a longer and …

Just over three days after SpaceX successfully launched its Iridium-2 payload and recovered the first stage aboard its Western drone ship, the autonomous spaceport drone ship (ASDS) has returned to port to begin the process of offloading its Falcon 9 passenger. Locals have already begun to post photos on Twitter, and at least one fan livestreamed the arrival. Higher quality photos will undoubtedly arrive soon, and the docking of a drone ship usually closely precedes SpaceX releasing photos of the first stage recovery. Just Read the Instructions and Falcon 9 B1036 in all its soot-covered glory. (Periscope/@freddyp75) This marks the second time that SpaceX has recovere…

Tesla has hit record highs in recent days and the company has announced its expansion into an array of new business ventures, and it all comes right before a pivotal time for the company’s bread-and-butter revenue grabber: Its second quarter delivery report for its vehicles. Tesla is set to report its Q2 vehicle deliveries sometime in early July, likely before the Independence Day holiday. The Elon Musk-led company differs with its delivery reporting model in that it only files reports quarterly, rather than the monthly filing that is industry standard. As the norm, Tesla will report Model X and Model S deliveries in the last fiscal quarter, but this particular quarte…

Back-to-back rocket launches, multi-billion dollar acquisitions and a car that drives itself bring a lot of futuristic and daring images to mind, but one word that may not immediately come to your tongue when you hear all of these things is “cautious.” According to IBM’s supercomputer, cautious is exactly what Elon Musk is. As first reported by CNBC, job search firm Paysa used IBM’s supercomputer (and brilliant Jeopardy contestant) Watson to determine the top 11 most cautious tech leaders in the nation. The scoring was on a scale from 0, being least cautious, to 1.0 as most cautious. The scores were calculated from speeches, essays, books, interviews and a variety of ot…
