SpaceX has successfully conducted its eight launch of 2017 and the second successful reuse of an orbital class rocket ever. BulgariaSat-1 is currently attached to the second stage and is coasting in orbit in preparation for one more burn of the second stage engine before being deployed. After previously revealing that this recovery would be the most trying attempt yet for the Falcon 9’s first stage, Musk has now confirmed what most of fans already surmised from the live coverage. Core 1029 has successfully been recovered once again, albeit in a very toasty form, and after a very hard landing that used almost all of the shock absorption within the stage’s landing legs…

Falcon 9 Core 1029 is now vertical with the BulgariaSat-1 payload at Launch Pad 39A, and the vehicle is deep into preparations for a launch now planned to occur around 12:10pm PST, 3:10pm EST. Launch was delayed an hour earlier this morning for additional ground system checks, but the vehicle and payload are in good health and ready for launch. Elon Musk noted an hour before launch that the attempted recovery of the first stage will result in the vehicle experiencing the fastest reentry and the most atmospheric heating yet, with Musk himself stating that there was a good chance that the booster would not survive. With that booster having already flown once befor…

In a recent video posted by KM77.com, the Tesla Model X is shown successfully completing the “moose test” up to speeds of 70 kmh, but failing it at higher speeds. The famous “moose test” measures a car’s ability to maneuver around a suddenly appearing obstacle, such as a moose or a child running out onto the road. Traffic cones are set up in an S-shape to simulate the obstacle and road edges, while the car is weighted to achieve the maximum load. The Model X tested weighed about 2.8 tons. In the video, the car successfully swerves and returns to the original lane without knocking over any of the cones at 70 kmh, which is only about 43 mph. But when the driver speeds …

Overseas production and a streaming service led by actress Amber Heard were some of the headlines that dominated a week of record stock highs for Tesla. The excitement first ignited on Tuesday when shares rose 1.5% after Bloomberg broke the story of the potential Tesla plant being built in Shanghai’s Lingang development zone. Shares of Tesla hit all-time intraday highs at $378.88. [Photo credit: Tesla] Year-to-date, TSLA saw 73% gain going into Tuesday. That record was then dwarfed Thursday when shares reached a new all-time high at $385, undoubtedly spurred by the EV company confirming it is in fact in talks with the Shanghai municipal government to …

Just when you think Tesla had enough projects on its plate, Tesla is reportedly interested in entering the music business. Recode is reporting that the company has entered talks with all the major music labels and plans to introduce it’s music streaming service soon. It isn’t clear how Tesla plans to package the service for Tesla owners, but they are looking at multi-tiered models, like Spotify or Pandora. Ever since the launch of the Tesla Model S in 2012, Tesla has offered music services through their massive 17-inch display. Tesla offered Slacker Radio to US and Canadian vehicles and introduced Spotify in December 2015 for its European customers. Tesla owners have…

Tesla has confirmed that it is now in talks with the Shanghai municipal government to build a Gigafactory and manufacture cars in the city’s tech sector, according to Reuters. “While we expect most of our production to remain in the U.S., we need to establish local factories to ensure affordability for the markets they serve,” Tesla said in a statement. [Photo credit: Tesla] Chinese regulations require Tesla to enter into a joint venture with a local company to manufacture vehicles in the country. While Tesla hasn’t announced a partner yet, all eyes are on Tencent Holdings, the Chinese internet company that holds a 5% stake in Musk’s company. The EV c…

With Model 3 production kicking off and the first deliveries taking place next month, reservation holders are facing a question that has been too far off in the distance to ask until now: With 400,000 people holding reservations for a Model 3, when will I get mine? At the top of the list are SpaceX and Tesla employees, who were given access to make reservations 2 weeks before the general public as a show of thanks for their hard work. This also helps keep the feedback loop for any early production issues as short as possible, letting Tesla fix the issues with minimal impact on the general public. Beyond the employees, a number of factors come into play about whe…

New photos have surfaced on Reddit of the Model 3 at a supercharging station. Unlike past photos, these show the Model 3’s charging screen and several crucial details around the vehicle. The Tesla engineer driving the test vehicle didn’t seem to mind photos being taken and even mentioned that they were driving the vehicle home for the night. Take a look at the different photos and features below. The Model 3 was seen with full autopilot hardware and this close-up of the front-facing cameras. The Tesla vision system looks nearly identical to the current Model S and X system, but with a new rain sensor added (top right sensor). The Tesla Model S and X previously …

A new North Carolina bill has the potential to turn Tesla’s luck around in the state, allowing it to operate its own dealerships. North Carolina House Bill 617 was originally written in April to provide guidelines for temporary automotive sales permits for antique and specialty vehicles, but was reintroduced on Wednesday with a broader scope. The new writing of the bill largely does away with the antique vehicle scope and instead provides guidance for manufacturer-owned dealerships as long as they sell only electric vehicles or have no other traditional dealer franchises. Tesla is not explicitly stated in the bill but the writing makes it clear that it was writt…

This article first appeared on: Swedish auto manufacturer, Volvo, has announced it is now entering the high-performance EV market. The company is transforming its long-time racing and performance division into an EV powerhouse. Polestar will become a “new separately-branded electrified global high-performance car company.” The new vehicles will not bear the Volvo brand and will be introduced as an entirely new stand-alone brand. Volvo purchased Polestar in 2015, a move that allowed the brand to introduce higher performing vehicles. At the time of the acquisition, Volvo stated that they intended to incorporate their hybrid technology into the vehicles. Now,…

The EV world was rocked when it was announced that Tesla replaced its Vice President of Autopilot Software, Chris Lattner, with Andrej Karpathy. Karpathy is the company’s new Director of AI and Autopilot Vision, but who he is? Karpathy most recently worked as a research scientist with Elon Musk’s OpenAI, specializing in deep neural networks. He also had three summer stints at Google. In 2011 and 2013, Karpathy interned for the tech behemoth working on large scale deep learning and video content analysis. In 2015, he was with Google DeepMind, focusing on deep reinforcement learning. In 2009, Karpathy graduated from University of Toronto with a Bachelor’s of …

Elon Musk is just like any other guy. He wakes up, reads emails, sends his kids off to school and goes to work. For the most part, his relatability ends there. Musk is one of the most productive men in the world, and his employees at SpaceX just propelled him to a new accolade, 8th place in Glassdoor’s Top 100 CEOs list. The ranking is decided by anonymous entries from employees. Musk came in with a 98% approval rating among his employees, shattering the average CEO rating of 67%. The list is topped by Clorox’s Benno Dorrer, and fellow chip innovator and Tesla owner Jen-Hsu Huang of NVIDIA came in 6th. Musk’s ranking comes solely from SpaceX, as his Te…
