    Like @@James Thomas Rook Jr., I cannot think that a politician as wiley and experienced as Mr Putin would use the word "persecute" in connection with his own government's activity. As suggested above, the word "prosecute" makes far more sense and indeed a statement as quoted: is no less an indictment on the persecution (intended use) of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russis and is really more credible.

    Know what you mean, but in the particular instance, I don't see the "going up to heaven" bit. Note, I said "like" as a point of comparison only.

Is it conceivably possible that those who do as @The Librarian has noted are possibly deriving some sort of vicarious pleasure in this? I mean, if they know of incidents of abuse, part publicise, and yet do not report them (even anonymously ) through the proper channels, what could possibly be their motive?

    It is a good thing anyway to see the Netherlands authorities making some kind of a start to get to grips with this problem. "In the Netherlands, every year more than 100,000 children and young people between the ages of 0 and 18 are abused in one or more ways. It is estimated that between 40 and 80 children die of the consequences."
