Two are missionaries of Jehovah's Witnesses. All were treated in hospitals. The dog was sacrificed.

ARLINGTON - A pit bull attacked a group of missionaries Tuesday afternoon in Arlington, sending four people to hospitals and leaving one of them, a woman in her 70s, with severe dog bites.

Four Jehovah's Witnesses arrived at the house in a van around 12:25 pm in the 6500 block of 204 NE Street, in front of Arlington Cemetery, said city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield.

A woman, 76, opened the door of the truck. A male pit bull escaped from a backyard fence, pounced on the missionary and mutilated him. The other three missionaries tried to get the dog out of it, Banfield said.

Two relatives of the dog owner ran out of the home to help. The group used a tree branch 3 to 4 inches in diameter to hit the pit bull, to try to stop it from biting. The dog was defeated, but he continued to fight in at least three separate attacks, Banfield said. The severely wounded woman broke free and retreated to the truck. He lost a lot of blood, said Banfield.

The aid teams asked for a medical helicopter. It was canceled because it would have taken too long to fly from Bellingham, Banfield said. The woman was transported to Providence Everett Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

A second missionary, a 40-year-old woman, was bitten. A man, 31, and a woman, 63, of the house were also attacked. Ambulances brought those three to Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington. The extent of his injuries was not clear. The other two missionaries were not hurt.

Police and animal control officers responded to the house. A tow truck dragged the missionaries' truck to be confiscated as evidence. The detectives were investigating the attack until nightfall.

The owner of the dog returned to the house. He handed the dog over to the Arlington police and, without asking for help, asked the officers to slaughter the animal.
