Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Asmara, Eritrea. The Eritrean government has arrested nearly 100 Christians this month as part of the massive crackdown against unregistered churches. According to World Watch Monitor, the arrests took place in the days leading up to Eritrea's Independence Day on May 24. On May 9, a total of 10 Christians were arrested from a home in Ginda, north-east of Asmara, for holding secret meetings there. Church members have resorted to holding secret meetings in people's houses since a law was passed in 2002, banning churches other than the Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and also Sunni Islam. On May 17, …

Someone Left A Noose Inside The African American History Museum In DC: buzzfeed: Visitors were removed from a section of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, on Wednesday after a noose was found on the floor of one of the rooms, Smithsonian officials said. It’s the second time this week a noose has been discovered on the grounds of a Smithsonian museum. The rope was found Wednesday by a tourist inside one of the museum’s three history galleries, the Era of Segregation 1786-1968, Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas told BuzzFeed News. “It was rather a small rope thing and not something that would set off the magnetometer…

medresearch: New Imaging Technique Aims to Ensure Surgeons Completely Remove Cancer Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, along with collaborators at the California Institute of Technology, have developed photoacoustic imaging, a new method to scan a tumor sample and produce images detailed and accurate enough to be used to check whether a tumor has been completely removed. This could replace the current method of determining whether or not all cancerous tissue has been removed, which takes a day or more. More work is needed before photoacoustic imaging is fast enough to be used during an operation. The research is published i…

Elon Musk threatens to leave White House councils over Paris deal: politico: Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that if President Donald Trump follows through on pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate change agreement, he’d “have no choice” but to cut off his participation in White House business councils. “Don’t know which way Paris will go, but I’ve done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH & via councils, that we remain,” Musk tweeted. Musk followed up with a tweet saying, “Will have no choice but to depart councils” if Trump pulls out of the Paris deal backed by nearly 200 other countries. POLITICO and others have reported that Trump …

neurosciencestuff: How does heightened attention improve our mental capacity? This is the question tackled by new University of Bristol research published in the journal Cell Reports, which reveals a chemical signal released across the brain in response to attention demanding or arousing situations. The new discoveries indicate how current drugs used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, designed to boost this chemical signal, counter the symptoms of dementia. The results could also lead to new ways of enhancing cognitive function to counteract the effects of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia, as well as enhancing memory in healthy people. The team of med…

robertreich: Say you’re Vladimir Putin, and you did a deal with Trump last year. I’m not suggesting there was any such deal, mind you. But if you are Putin and you did do a deal, what did Trump agree to do? 1. Repudiate NATO. NATO is the biggest thorn in your side – the alliance that both humiliates you and stymies your ambitions in the Baltics and elsewhere. Trump almost delivered on this last week by pointedly not reaffirming Article 5, which states that an attack on one NATO ally is an attack on all. 2. Antagonize Europe, especially Angela Merkel. She’s the strongest leader in the West other than Trump, and you’d love to drive a wedge between the U.S. and Ger…

Tea Consumption Leads to Epigenetic Changes in Women: currentsinbiology: Epigenetic changes are chemical modifications that turn our genes off or on. In a new study from Uppsala University, researchers show that tea consumption in women leads to epigenetic changes in genes that are known to interact with cancer and estrogen metabolism. The results are published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics. It is well known that our environment and lifestyle factors, such as food choices, smoking and exposure to chemicals, can lead to epigenetic changes. In the current study, researchers from Uppsala University in collaboration with research groups around Europe, in…

neurosciencestuff: A new research study contradicts the established view that so-called split-brain patients have a split consciousness. Instead, the researchers behind the study, led by UvA psychologist Yair Pinto, have found strong evidence showing that despite being characterised by little to no communication between the right and left brain hemispheres, split brain does not cause two independent conscious perceivers in one brain. Their results are published in the latest edition of the journal Brain. Split brain is a lay term to describe the result of a corpus callosotomy, a surgical procedure first performed in the 1940s to alleviate severe epilepsy amon…
