U.S. stocks held session highs thanks to a bounce in crude oil on Monday. Prices moved above $31 on renewed hopes over a production freeze between Russia and key members of OPEC. The S&P 500 and Dow moved out of correction territory. U.S. manufacturing activity in February slowed to its lowest level since October 2012. The data highlights recent weakness in the sector as a higher U.S. dollar dampens overseas demand. Weight Watchers (WTW) shares pulled back from Friday's rally on news a favorable academic study had been funded by the company. The study released on Friday suggested adults with prediabetes benefited from weight-loss programs such as Weight Watchers. Fox'…

The United States Department of Justice files a motion to compel Apple Inc. to comply with a FBI phone used by an attacker in the 2015 San Bernardino attack. In a stinging rebuke of Apple, federal prosecutors contended Friday that the company was “not above the law” and could easily help the government unlock a terrorist's smartphone without undermining anyone else's privacy.

WASHINGTON — Russia will ask permission on Monday to start flying surveillance planes equipped with high-powered digital cameras amid warnings from U.S. intelligence and military officials that such overflights help Moscow collect intelligence on the United States. Russia and the United States are signatories to the Open Skies Treaty, which allows unarmed observation flights over the entire territory of all 34 member nations to foster transparency about military activity and help monitor arms control and other agreements. Senior intelligence and military officials, however, worry that Russia is taking advantage of technological advances to violate the spirit of the t…

In a study published in the journal 'Schizophrenia Research', experts wrote that cat ownership is “significantly more common” in families where a child is later diagnosed with "schizophrenia or another serious mental illness”, the Huffington Post reported. By analysing a previously unused questionnaire of from 1982 filled in by 2,125 families that belonged to the National Institute of Mental Illness, scientists discovered that 50.6 per cent of people who developed schizophrenia owned a cat in chil…

A judge has ordered a religious order, the Clercs de St. Viateur du Canada, and the church-run Montreal Insitute for the Deaf to pay $30 million to a group of former students who were sexually assaulted by priests, making it the largest settlement for sexual assault in Quebec history. At least 60 deaf students were assaulted by members of the religious community and lay people working at the school between 1940 and 1982. The school changed its name to the Institut Raymond-Dewar in 1984. The judgment brings to an end a long and painful process that began with the authorization of a class action suit in 2012. Represented by Robert Kugler, of the firm Kugler K…
