CANTERBURY, England — Christians should regard blood and organ donations as their Christian duty, says a motion before the General Synod, the governing body of the Church of England. The synod is set to consider a proposal to define organ donation as central to Christian giving. The motion cites the bishop of Carlisle, James Newcome, who told delegates to the three-day meeting: “We believe that everything we have, including our bodies, and our possessions, comes from God, and following in the footsteps of Jesus we are called to make a sacrificial offering of what already belongs to him for the benefit of others.” That sacrificial offering, he added, may inc…

In a letter to a leading Anglican gay rights campaigner, the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said that Church's teaching on sexuality was a “matter for discussion” during a series of special meetings being held behind closed doors. His comments make clear that the Church has not ruled out reconsidering its traditional teaching that marriage is only between a man and a woman and that sex outside of marriage is a “sin”. "It doesn’t involve much change in doctrine, it just involves stopping ‘throwing gays under the bus’ when they want to get married or when they fall in love," Rt Rev Alan Wilson But senior cleric…

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards are held at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. A Grammy Award (originally called Gramophone Award), or Grammy, is an accolade by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the mainly English-language music industry. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and the presentation of those awards that have a more popular interest. It shares recognition of the music industry as that of the other performance arts: Emmy Awards (television), the Tony Awards (stage performance), and the Academy Awards (motion pictures). The…

[My answer to a nearly identical question on Researchgate] Don't think of the photon as a little bullet that is emitted by an electron. The fundamental object is the electromagnetic field. Changes in the electromagnetic field in the vacuum propagate at the speed of light. And because the electromagnetic field is a quantum field, changes (at any given energy level) come in discrete lumps, discrete quanta, which we call photons. So yes, the photon is born at light speed. That is, the change in the electromagnetic field induced by the electron propagates at the speed of light. Is photon born at light speed? Or has an acceleration time? - ResearchGate. Available f…

BOISE - The Senate Health and Welfare Committee may soon consider a bill that would amend religious exemptions for faith healing, but not take them all away. Parents would continue to have the right to refuse vaccinations or extraordinary care for their children. However, if a child's life is at serious risk, medical help would be required by law. A panel was held Thursday at the Statehouse to discuss the injury to child law on the books. Mariah Walton spoke at the panel. The 20-year-old grew up in a religion that believes in faith healing over medical care. "I would wake up with severe headaches," explained Walton. "I would cry for hours and my parents…

Most people would agree that love is complicated, but thanks to science, it’s just gotten a whole lot more complicated. Before you buy your valentine chocolate or flowers, you might consider undergoing a DNA test to figure out whether or not you’re wasting your together. An online company professes that it can determine a couple’s compatibility based on a swab of saliva. Toronto-based startup Instant Chemistry offers couples an at-home DNA test kit to help them understand if their relationship is designed to last. Photo credit: Shutterstock CBSDFW-TV conducted an consumer study with two couples to see if the company’s claims were true. Max…

Like Rolling Stones farewell tours or the McRib, every few years they seem to come back. I'm talking about those ready-made-for-reposting, viral-friendly photographs of McDonald's food that doesn't seem to ever rot. It started back in 2008, when Karen Hanrahan shared a photograph of a McDonald's hamburger she bought in 1996 on her blog, Best of Mother Earth. Thing is, she took that photo in 2008, and the 12-year-old burger looked nearly identical to a fresh McDonald's burger. She then went on to explain that the reason the burger didn't rot was because it had "absolutely no nutrition" and was a "chemical food." Since then, the experiment has been repeated many times,…

Bernie Sanders got a major endorsement this week that signifies the support that he has from a young activist part of the African American community. While the early Sanders campaign was fraught with awkward run-ins between the senator from Vermont and black political groups, the daughter of a major symbol of the Black Lives Matter movement has just come out in support of him. Erica Garner, daughter of the late Eric Garner, who died from a chokehold inflicted by Staten Island police in 2014, stars in a dramatic clip calling Sanders a “protestor.”
