A new study suggests that ketamine, an increasingly popular treatment for depression, has something in common with drugs like fentanyl and oxycodone. The small study found evidence that ketamine's effectiveness with depression, demonstrated in many small studies over the past decade, comes from its interaction with the brain's opioid system. A Stanford University team reported their findings Wednesday in The American Journal of Psychiatry. "We think ketamine is acting as an opioid," says Alan Schatzberg, one of the study's authors and a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University. "That's why you're getting these rapid effects." h…

Once Again, STDs Are at an All-Time High
by Guest Nicole- 0 replies

For the fourth year in a row, STD rates in the United States are on the rise (i.e. if you feel like you’ve heard this before, you have). In 2017, nearly 2.3 million sexually transmitted diseases were diagnosed, which marks an increase over 2016’s then-record high by more than 200,000 cases. These numbers refer specifically to cases of chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea, each of which pose significant risk factors for those infected. Though this annual increase in STD rates is not new to this year, it does mark part of a troubling overall trend upward, the CDC says, announcing these findings at the National STD Prevention Conference on Tuesday. https://www.thecut.com/…

For first time in 40 years, cure for acute leukemia within reach

Acute myeloid leukemia is one of the most aggressive cancers. While other cancers have benefitted from new treatments, there has been no encouraging news for most leukemia patients for the past 40 years. Until now. As published today in the scientific journal Cell, Professor Yinon Ben-Neriah and his research team at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU)'s Faculty of Medicine have developed a new biological drug with a cure rate of 50% for lab mice with acute leukemia. Leukemia produce a variety (and a high quantity) of proteins that together provide leukemic cells with rapid growth and death protection from chemotherapy. https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_rel…

New York Public Library Brings Literary Classics to Instagram
by Guest Nicole- 0 replies

You might not think to pick up a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland from your local library. But the New York Public Library is willing to bet that if you can access it with the tap of your finger—on an app you probably already have open—you just might find yourself falling deep into the alternate universe dreamed up by Lewis Carroll in his beloved novel. That’s part of the thinking behind Insta Novels, NYPL’s latest program to bring literary classics to the digital masses. As the name suggests, the library is taking advantage of the popularity and wide reach of Instagram by uploading literary classics in their entirety into the app’s Stories feature—essentiall…

Marijuana Found in Breast Milk 6 Days after Use
by Guest Nicole- 1 reply

More and more people consider smoking marijuana harmless or even beneficial, but mounting research suggests women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid it altogether. That’s according to new recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which cites growing evidence of marijuana’s potential harm to children’s long-term development. The strong direction to women and pediatricians comes as more than half of states, including California, have legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use, and studies show that a growing number of babies are being exposed to the drug. The march toward marijuana legalization has outpaced scientific resea…

New study among senior Singaporeans suggests happiness may be key to longevity Date: August 27, 2018 Source: Duke-NUS Medical School Summary: In a new study, researchers have found that increase in happiness is directly proportional with a reduction in mortality. The study, which focused on Singaporeans aged 60 years and older, found that even small increments in happiness may be beneficial, suggesting individual activities as well as government policies and programs that maintain or improve psychological well-being may contribute to longer life. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/08/180827100426.htm

KLM and Facebook Messenger
by Guest- 0 replies

KLM wanted to make it easier for customers and agents to have meaningful conversations, without compromising privacy. The airline knew that its customers spent a lot of time on Facebook and Messenger, making them ideal communication platforms. But KLM also knew that people are not allowed to share sensitive travel information on its Facebook Page. So KLM added the “Send Message” button to its Page, allowing people to quickly, seamlessly and privately communicate with its agents. This simple action resulted in an instant 40% increase in Facebook messages from customers, so KLM collaborated with Digital Genius to implement artificial intelligence (AI) for its social media …

“Now” travels at the speed of light
by Guest- 2 replies

Let me attempt to blow your mind: “Now” travels at the speed of light. When the light turns green, I don't concern myself with the fact that the light actually turned green a nanosecond earlier than I saw it. As far as the distances we're used to, “now” might just as well be universal. On interstellar distances, you might expect that the lag start mattering. Except it really doesn't. Maybe Sirius isn't there anymore. Maybe it went supernova five years ago, and the shockwave is riding towards us as you read, and it will hit us in another three years. There's no way we'd know. We look up and see the old faithful Sirius sitting right where it's always been. And we …

Our world is a huge box in the attic with a bunch of fascinating secrets. For example, did you know that in the forests in Thailand, there are real zombies and that city smog is not all that harmful? We at Bright Side decided to look into this box and share several amazing facts about this world with you. Psychologists from the State University of New York at Binghamton found that a text message with a period at the end of the sentence appears more disingenuous. They showed a group of 126 students a text conversation that contained this question, “Dave gave me a free ticket. Do you want to come?” and this answer, “Okay”. The an…

Breastfeeding linked to lower stroke risk
by Guest Nicole- 0 replies
(Reuters Health) - Breastfeeding may protect a woman from stroke later in life, and the benefit appears to increase with the length of time she nurses, a U.S. study suggests. Postmenopausal women who said they breastfed at least one child had a 23 percent lower risk of stroke in middle and old age compared with women who had children but didn’t breastfeed, researchers found. The effect was strongest among black women, whose stroke risk was cut nearly in half with breastfeeding. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death among U.S. women aged 65 and older and the third leading cause among Hispanic and black women in that age group, the study’s authors note in th…

Dear Mark, (I know we aren't on a first name basis .. so pardon me that) You created a "forum" that went viral and shook up the world. All forum admins everywhere have been trying to learn your secret to success ever since. Governments are trying to figure out what to do with Facebook. They love it and hate it at the same time. However, your shareholders greed has come to the point where they are endangering the precious baby you created. No one has ever seen a company pivot from desktop to mobile as fast or as successfully. With all that said, let me offer my humble opinion on your platform. Gut bug enzyme turns blood into type-O
by Guest Nicole- 0 replies
Scientists believe they have found a reliable way to transform donor blood into the universal type needed for safe, emergency blood transfusions. The discovery is enzymes from gut bacteria that can efficiently turn type-A human blood into type-O. Type-O blood is special because it can be donated to anyone without the risk of a bad mismatch reaction. The researchers, from the University of British Columbia, say clinical trials of the treatment could begin soon. The gut bug enzymes remove markers from the surface of the donor red blood cells present in type A but not in type O. Stripping them away means the recipient's immune system will think the d…
