What would have been a milestone for gun “manufacturing” gets the boot: Today was set to be the first day youÂ’d be able to download blueprints to 3D-print a gun at home. But instead, a federal judge blocked the public availability of the blueprints just a handful of hours before they were set to hit the open internet. How we got here: Nonprofit Defense Distributed and the State Department reached a settlement earlier this year allowing it to release DIY 3D-printed gun plans. What it meant: People with a 3D printer could have printed a range of firearms that are untraceable and invisible to background checks. But what happened? Gun contro…

If your cabinets are looking a little bare these days, you might want to stock up soon. Consumer goods leader P&G (+0.82%) is raising prices on some of its major brands. The price of Pampers diapers in North America will increase 4% on average. Charmin toilet paper, Bounty paper towels, and Puffs tissues will all see an average price increase of 5%. And surprise! Tariffs aren't contributing to higher costs. Instead, P&G is hoping to ride a wave of rising consumer confidence to give its thinning margins a little room to breathe. Want another reason prices are going up? Here's one answer: pulp. No, not the kind that ruins an otherwi…

Those who have followed me elsewhere know I have been grumbling about Word lately. When I grumble, I grumble big. I did it on Twitter, too, even tagging @microsoft. Very quickly I heard from @OfficeSupport Hi, Tom. Thank you for reaching out. Please tell us more about the issue that you're having? Also, which Office application are you using? We'll wait for your response. Me: This is kind of you to respond. The ‘Link to Previous’ button seems to have no effect. Office365Word. Enter chapter titles in odd header & it still populates headers of other sections. Sometimes it does. Othertimes no. Am I misreading the instructions? …

As you mull it over, consider this jaw-dropping report from China: JD.com, a Chinese e-commerce behemoth, claimed it could receive, pack, ship, and deliver 200,000 orders a day across China. But get this, it employs just four workers at the fulfillment center. And those employees' jobs? To service the robots that fulfill the orders... Final food for thought: In January, the World Economic Forum and Boston Consulting Group said that by 2026, over 1 million Americans could lose their jobs to automation. + There's always another side to the story: "AI Doesn't Eliminate Jobs, It Creates Them."

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced a legally binding plan that will force Facebook to "make significant changes to its advertising platform by removing the ability of third-party advertisers to exclude ethnic and religious minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, and other protected groups from seeing their ads. The AG's office of Washington state joined a chorus of unhappy—and litigious—Facebook users in late 2016 after a ProPublica investigation revealed how easy it was for Facebook advertisers to discriminate against users who were defined by "ethnic affinities." These were labeled with clear demographics like African-American, Asian-American, and His…

Today Presidents Trump and Putin meet for summit, and the New York Times tells of an exiled Jehovah's Witness who proposes Trump ask Putin a simple question: "Why are Russians who pay their taxes, follow the law and embrace the Christian values promoted by the Kremlin being forced to flee their country?" https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/16/world/europe/putin-trump-russia-jehovahs-witness.html A simple [and single] question. To propose that Trump do this is exactly the non-confrontational style of Jehovah's Witnesses, and is proof in itself that they are not extremist. Moreover, because the goal is so modest, it is not impossible that it could happen. Persecution …

Eating fat is the only cause of weight gain, study says
by Guest Nicole- 2 replies

Many studies have shown that carbohydrates, sugar and fat are the causes of weight gain. However, a new report reveals that fat is the only culprit. Researchers from the University of Aberdeen and the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently conducted a study, published in the Cell Metabolism journal, to explore the impacts of macronutrients on body weight. To do so, they fed mice 30 different diets that varied in fat, carbs and protein contents for a three-month period, the equivalent of nine years for humans.
