Tesla’s fourth-largest shareholder, Tencent Holdings, is reportedly looking to come to market with its own self-driving technology. Reports of a self-driving prototype being tested by the Chinese tech and media investment firm drove company shares up 3% in trading action on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Tencent will be leveraging its mapping and AI technology to compete in an industry thatÂ’s become increasingly more congested as big names in technology like Google, Apple, Uber, Tesla, and local search giant Baidu, pour heavy investment dollars into an emerging $42 billion industry, says Bloomberg. When you think Tesla, your typically think Fremont, California or Sparks, Nevada. But Bloomberg published a fascinating story, The Canadian Ghost Town That Tesla Is Bringing Back to Life, which reports on some important mines in North America that are addressing the “global demand for cobalt, a component in batteries used to power electric cars for automakers from Tesla Inc. to Volkswagen AG.” So where is this so-called Canadian ghost town? Ironically, itÂ’s called Cobalt, Ontario and it only has a population 1,100. Above: Cobalt has a long history of mining silver but thatÂ’s changing as Cobalt is fast-becoming a hotspot for its namesake, cobalt (Image: Camp Scout) …

Tesla quietly improved performance on the Model S and Model X over the summer, cutting down 0-60mph times on vehicleÂ’s equipped with a 75kWh or non-performance 100kWh battery pack by roughly 1-second. According to TeslaÂ’s online configurator for Model S, the 335-mile range 100D can accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds, or roughly the same acceleration as TeslaÂ’s original single-motor, performance Model S P85. However, Tesla may very well be sandbagging performance figures, according to Drag Times. A test of a recent production Tesla Model S 100D revealed that the vehicle can accelerate nearly 15% quicker than what the company advertises. In addition to laying do…

Tesla will be supporting Nantucket’s aging back-up power system through the installation of a 48MWh Powerpack battery energy storage solution. The sleepy island town, located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts and approximately 100 miles from Boston, has become a popular summer destination in recent years and, as a result, experiencing significant increases in demand for electricity. While this would ordinarily be seen as positive news for Nantucket’s 10,000 residents, part of the island’s electrical infrastructure that’s nearing its end of life sees it differently. Electricity flowing into Nantucket is supported by two undersea transmission lines that extend from t…

I love California in many more ways than one. Show me a land that seemingly basks in eternal sunshine and is home to arguably one of the most iconic automotive brands in history, Tesla, and I’ll tell you that any Model S owner like myself would be hard-pressed to imagine the Golden State as anything less than a basket of rainbows and unicorns. Except, I donÂ’t live there. And the thought of possibly having to wait in long lines to charge my Tesla frightens me. IÂ’m a Philly Gal whoÂ’s grown used to my electric car lifestyle over the years, and in a region where finding a charging station was once akin to playing a game of WhereÂ’s Waldo. We donÂ’t have Tesla Superchar…

by DANIELLA SILVA, RIMA ABDELKADER, ANDREW BLANKSTEIN, EMILY PANDISE and PETE WILLIAMS A gunman opened fire inside a rural Texas church on Sunday, killing about 25 people and injuring at least another 10, officials said. "Approximately 25 people" were deceased, including the gunman, following the shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackett told NBC News. A single shooter walked into the church and opened fire, Wilson County Commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. said earlier Sunday. In the past three years, SpaceX has made incredible progress in their program of reusability. In the practiceÂ’s first year, the young space company led by serial tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has performed three successful commercial reuses of Falcon 9 boosters in approximately eight months, and has at least two more reused flights scheduled before 2017 is out. Blue Origin, headed and funded by Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame, is perhaps most famous for its supreme confidence, best illustrated by Bezos offhandedly welcoming SpaceX “to the club” after the company first recovered the booster stage of its Falcon 9 rocket in 2015. Blue Origin began in the early 2000s as a pet pro…

Tesla has acquired one of its long time suppliers and maker of highly-automated manufacturing equipment, as the company looks to overcome Model 3 production challenges. Minnesota-based Perbix Machine Company, who’s been a supplier of Tesla for over three years, will be paid for with shares of Tesla’s common stock. The company has been supplying Tesla’s Sparks, Nevada-based Gigafactory and the Fremont factory with manufacturing equipment, including automated tools for production of drive units for its fleet of electric cars. Details of the acquisition were revealed in Tesla’s latest Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The Silicon Valley-based electric car maker ad…

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) recently released an in-depth report on electric vehicles. The ILSR’s report, Choosing the Electric Avenue – Unlocking Savings, Emissions Reductions, and Community Benefits of Electric Vehicles, authored by John Farrell, is a treasure trove for those looking to learn more about electric vehicles. One particular section of ILSRÂ’s report provides a helpful history lesson to better understand the evolution of the electric car. Farrell writes, “Electric cars arenÂ’t new. At the dawn of the U.S. auto industry in the late 1800s, electric vehicles outsold all other types of cars. By 1900, electric autos accounted for one-third of …

This Year's Ozone Hole Is the Smallest It's Been Since 1988

While the ozone hole is still enormous—measuring about 19.6 million square kilometers (7.6 million square miles, or 2.5 times the size of the U.S.) at its annual peak extent this Sept. 11—that's much smaller compared to the average area of ozone hole maximums since 1991 of roughly 26 million square kilometers (10 million square miles). "In the past, we've always seen ozone at some stratospheric altitudes go to zero by the end of September," said Bryan Johnson, NOAA atmospheric chemist. "This year our balloon measurements showed the ozone loss rate stalled by the middle of September and ozone levels never reached zero." The ozone shield in Earth's stratosphere he…

Tesla’s Director of Battery Engineering, Jon Wagner, has reportedly left the company to focus on a new role at a battery and powertrain startup in Redwood City, CA. The report first surfaced on Jalopnik states that Wagner departed Tesla in October, despite his LinkedIn profile still showing that he’s currently employed by the Silicon Valley electric car maker. Wagner, who’s been at Tesla since 2013, has served as Tesla’s Interim Director for Body Engineering, Computer Aided Engineering, Materials, and Battery Manufacturing Engineering throughout his near five-year term. During his time at Tesla, Wagner led the cost-down and product improvement effort for Model S and Mode…

Automotive journalist and veteran car reviewer, Doug DeMuro, who previously gave us a humorous look at why the Tesla Model X is an “awful car“, is back with another Tesla vehicle review this time of the California car makerÂ’s mass-market Model 3 sedan. The writer extraordinaire and ex-Jalopnik contributor who turned his passion for writing and playing with cars into a successful YouTube channel, takes us into the elusive world of what itÂ’s like to be behind the wheel of a Model 3. “HereÂ’s how this happened: I got an email from a viewer with a Tesla Model 3, and he asked if I wanted to review it. So I flew to California and spent the entire day with it.” says DeMur…

Tesla has added a new ‘Easy EntryÂ’ feature in its latest software update thatÂ’s designed to make getting in and out of the driverÂ’s seat easier. The over-the-air software update under version 8.1 (2017.44 02fdc86) has so far been pushed to only a handful of Model S and Model X owners, but will likely see a wider roll out over the coming weeks. Release notes for the latest update indicate that the Easy Entry will automatically adjust the steering wheel and seat position when the vehicle is parked. “Starting in this release, you can get in and out of the driverÂ’s seat more easily. When you park, the steering wheel and driverÂ’s seat will automatically adjust for an e…

As a former fighter pilot and university professor, I have long been involved in how to reduce conflict in the world. Conflict over resources, particularly oil, has driven continuous wars in the last century. Also concern over climate and energy usage has been a preoccupation. Furthermore it is getting colder in Boston every year and the snow is deeper. I need to eliminate dependence on oil and have a backup in case of electrical outage. It is my view that energy will be so low cost in the future that it will essentially be free if innovations in many laboratories come to fruition. The one solution that is readily available today for free energy is solar. Particularly in…
