Deep down in the forests of Wakayama prefecture in the middle of Honshu, lies a very interesting species of mushrooms. Called Shiinotomoshibitake, these mushrooms have a rather glowing characteristic, as they become flashy green at night, lighting up the forests. This forest is located in the Ukui peninsula on a mountain called Mezameyama, a location fairly unknown to either tourists and non-local Japanese.
While it is still unknown why exactly these mushrooms are glowing in the dark, it is said that it is a defensive mechanism against various insects. They start to appear from the end of May through the summer and show their best light after days of rain, with a minimum temperature of 20°C.
