Gilbert Jim Alit, a resident of California for over 65 years and of Yucca Valley for over 35 years, died March 2, 2019, at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was 78 years old.

The son of Martha Dick and Felicisimo Alit, he was born April 20, 1940, in Alaska.

Before he retired, he worked in transportation logistics and enjoyed driving big rigs. He also worked in real estate.

Jim was a faithful, dedicated Jehovah’s Witness. You may have seen him most any Friday or Saturday mornings outside of Jelly Donut, talking with others about faith, love and kindness. His dedication to helping his fellow man has inspired many. His understanding of life and his love for Jehovah has given much hope for others and it helped Jim tremendously, to live in faith.

Jim was a volunteer park ranger because he was in awe of the beautiful desert. He enjoyed photographing the blooms of the desert, the sun rising and falling upon the cacti he so adored. Jim was a nature lover and nature loved him back. He captured many moments on film and it was outdoors that he enjoyed most. He camped in many areas with all the family, extended family, friends and animals in tow. He always caught the fish and fried it up in a cast iron pan, as kids scrambled for the crunchy tail that cooked up like a potato chip.

He was preceded in death by mother Martha Dick; father Felicisimo Alit; siblings Phillip Dick Alit, Alita Maria Clark, Sonya Alice DiMondi and Virginia Tamura; previous wife Karen Alit; and stepchildren Charles Korhonen and Levi Korhonen.

He is survived by wife Shelly Jane Vukovich Korhonen Alit; previous wife Caroline Ruth Myres Alit; all his children, Adorio Jim Alit, Jeannie Marie Alit, Denise Renee Gilmore, James Robert Alit, John Frank Schmidt, Janet Karen Staten, Theresa Grace Carlini, Eric Royal Korhonen and Zachary Quinn Korhonen; and siblings Daniel Theodore Alit, Juanita Morgan, Vince B. Alit and Bette Lou Matthews.

He is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. March 23 at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Yucca Valley, 7321 Lucerne Vista, Yucca Valley, CA 92284.

He was a father to many and a friend to all he met. He had a sense of humor that was apparent until the very end. Jim was a strong man and overcame many obstacles during his time with us.

He was always happy to help others, he enjoyed creating art and “fixing” things and he generally enjoyed life to its fullest! He will be remembered as a loving servant of Jehovah, a humorous man who loved his family and a friend till the end for so many people. We love you PPpPAW!
