(CNN)Taking one of the most-prescribed medications in the world -- proton pump inhibitors -- might dramatically increase a person's risk for kidney failure and kidney disease, new research suggests. The study was released Thursday in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Doctors prescribe proton pump inhibitors, also known as PPIs, to help people who suffer from regular heart burn, ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease or acid reflux. They are sold under the names Prevacid, Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex and others. About 15 million Americans have prescriptions for them, although people can get them without a prescription -- so the number who use …

The NBA has signed deals with sports data providers Genius Sports Group and Sportradar to provide betting data to U.S. sportsbooks. The partnership is the first of its kind for a major U.S. sports league. Promoting in-game betting We're in the second quarter—will Lebron James make his next free throw? It's halftime—do you want to bet the "over," now bumped up 15 points given that high-scoring first half? This type of live gambling requires fast and reliable data transmission, which is at the crux of the NBA's new partnerships. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants the league to earn a cut from wagers on its games, but that's going to require legislative action…

I heard on the radio that AWS will no longer be using Intel chips exclusively for its cloud services. This could end up being a BIG deal down the road.

After charming the crowd at its annual conference for cloud-lovers (any nephologists in the house?), Amazon (+6.09%) got some bullish reviews. One Jefferies analyst said its Amazon Web Services cloud business could be worth $350 billion by 2022.

Hundreds of Google employees attached their signatures to a Medium postcalling on the company to squash Project Dragonfly. Project...Dragonfly...? It's the codename for a censored search engine Google's reportedly working on for use in China. Remember, Google pulled out of China in 2010 and hasn't been back since. Here's why employees are concerned: Dragonfly could hypothetically enable China to polish its act as your Big Brother, and not the kind that gives you a wedgie—we're talking state surveillance. More from the employee-backed letter... "Providing the Chinese government with ready access to user data...would make Google complicit in oppression and h…

Phrase #1: A picture is worth 1,000 words. Phrase #2: An ex-employee is worth 2,589. Let's start with the one you're familiar with. Facebook (-1.01%) CEO Mark Zuckerberg got trolled by lawmakers from Britain, Canada, France, Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, Latvia, Argentina, and Singapore. And for a little extra burn? They did it on Twitter. Their beef? Zuck (again) failed to show up when summoned by lawmakers to answer questions regarding Facebook's strategy for protecting user data and privacy. And now to Phrase #2: A former Facebook employee named Mark Luckie claimed the social media company has a "black person problem" in a 2,589-word post. He said …

General Motors (+4.76%) made a major announcement yesterday. "Staffing transformation": The automaker plans to cut its salaried workforce by as much as 15% (and its executive ranks by 25%). The cuts could total about 14,000 jobs. But remember, this "transformation" was set into motion last month, when GM offered buyout packages to about 18,000 salaried workers in North America. "Increasing capacity utilization": GM said it will stop production at five plants across the U.S. and Canada, and two more internationally, in 2019. (It's possible some could resume operations, pending the outcome of union negotiations.) Politicians from President Trump to Canadian…

We don't say this often: It's been a wild month at the FDA. Fresh off its e-cig regulations, the agency announced yesterday it's going to overhaul the procedure for approving most medical devices. Critics have waited a long time for this. The FDA currently operates under a framework from 1976, which allows certain devices to get a speedy, TSA PreCheck-type approval if manufacturers show their products are similar to others that already exist on the market. The problem? Those comparable products (you can call them "predicates") are sometimes decades-old. The data: Nearly 20% of devices cleared through this process are based on predicates that have been aro…
