Jack Ryan reacted to The Librarian in India: Jehovah's Witnesses may challenge order on national anthem in cinema theatres
The latest move by the Jehovah’s Witnesses will seek to overturn the apex court’s order on November 30, 2016, that all cinema halls in India would play the national anthem before the feature film starts.

OVER 30 years ago, a college professor in Kerala, who belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses sect, knocked at the doors of the highest court in India on behalf of his children, citing religion as the reason to safeguard their right to not sing the national anthem at school.
Next month, when a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra restarts hearing petitions on its order last year on national anthems in cinema halls, the Jehovah’s Witnesses may again be at the forefront in challenging that decision.
On August 11, 1986, the Supreme Court had allowed Emmanuel’s plea and held that forcing the children to sing the national anthem at school violated their fundamental right to religion.
The latest move by the Jehovah’s Witnesses will seek to overturn the apex court’s order on November 30, 2016, that all cinema halls in India would play the national anthem before the feature film starts. This order also made it mandatory for all present in the hall “to stand up to show respect to the national anthem” as part of their “sacred obligation”.
This time, it’s learnt that representatives of Jehovah’s Witnesses, including a US-based general counsel, are in the process of finalising a detailed application to be filed shortly in Supreme Court, which will restart hearings on February 14.
Among other things, the sect plans to seek the court’s intervention in ordering that its followers won’t have to stand up for the anthem in movie theatres. The sect hopes to convince the court that while it respects the national anthem and the flag, its religious beliefs prevent members from standing up for or singing the anthem.
The organisation has already secured relief on behalf of the sect on various issues in several countries, including saluting the flag and/or singing a country’s national anthem.
”Our patriotism can never be in doubt. But even standing for the national anthem is not allowed in our religion. Courts in several other countries have accepted our pleas on this count. The fact that we are looking to contest the court’s order doesn’t mean that we don’t respect our flag or our anthem. We hope to convince the court about that, like we have done in other countries, including the US and Canada,” said sources linked to the sect’s move.
When contacted, former Union law minister and senior advocate Kapil Sibal confirmed that he has been approached by representatives of the sect in this regard.
”They informed me that their religious views don’t allow them to even stand up when the anthem is played. Their stand is that this doesn’t mean they will ever do anything to disrespect any country’s flag or anthem. These are issues of significant Constitutional importance,” Sibal told The Indian Express.
Jehovah’s Witnesses is a Christianity-based evangelical sect, which bases its beliefs solely on the text of the Bible. The group does not celebrate Easter or Christmas and believes that traditional Churches have deviated from the text of the Bible. However, the sect is not considered a part of mainstream Christianity because it also rejects the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
In the 1986 case, the Supreme Court bench had ruled in favour of the Jehovah’s Witnesses family. “Our tradition teaches tolerance, our philosophy teaches tolerance, our Constitution practices tolerance, let us not dilute it,” the bench had said.
It had also noted that there was “no provision of law”, which “obliges” anyone to sing the national anthem.
However, the bench of Justice Misra, in its order last year, had said that “a time has come” when “citizens of the country must realise that they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to the National Anthem, which is the symbol of Constitutional patriotism and inherent national quality”.
On December 9, the bench clarified its order to state that “if a physically challenged person or physically handicapped person goes to the cinema hall to watch a film, he need not stand up, if he is incapable to stand, but must show such conduct which is commensurate with respect for the national anthem”.
The order has drawn widespread criticism, with renowned jurist Soli Sorabjee terming it as an example of “judicial overreach”.
In 1986, armed with the Supreme Court order, Emmanuel got his and other children from Jehovah’s Witnesses re-admitted in the NSS High School at Kidangoor in Kottayam district, 4 km from their village Kadaplamattom near Pala. The school run by the Hindu organisation, Nair Service Society, had 11 students from the sect, at the time.
After sitting in the classes for a day, the Emmanuel children left school. Some of the other children from the sect moved to other schools.
Emmanuel decided not to have formal education for his other four children, either. None of his eight grandchildren, who study in various schools, sings the national anthem.

Jack Ryan reacted to TrueTomHarley in Maybe You Can Pick Me Up For Meetings
She was a big, disheveled, super-friendly and warm, black woman sitting on her wheeled walker outside Wegmans who said Hi! as I walked by. I stopped.

Can I ask you a question? she said. You see, she had to catch her bus – that one across the parking lot - she’d missed one and she was freezing, but the dog had ate her money or something and she needed $3.

How do I know you’re on the up and up? I asked. She replied she guessed I didn’t but grab her hand and just see feel cold she is. ‘Well, I can spare $3,’ I thought and handed it over.

I also gave her a card. ‘Just so you know,’ I said. ‘Do with it what you will on your own time.’

On seeing the card, she lit up. Do I know so-and-so? What about what’s-his-face? How is this one doing and that one and a third one. She was raised a Witness and went to the Hall (the same Hall I had gone to, though not at the same time) But she had not took hold.

I went to prison for a few years then I got hit by a car and then I went into a coma. They were going to pull the plug on me but someone said ‘no.’ She related all this in the most happy tone you can imagine, as though describing her day at the amusement park. Her appearance suggested that everything she said was true. She had every ‘right’ to be bitter and sullen but she wasn’t – a huge plus in my book. I’ve seen white people (and black) carry on and on with far less hardship.

‘I’m surprised that Wegmans didn’t chase her away,’ my daughter said. But had they tried it on my watch, I would have chased them away. As we chatted, a woman left the store and handed her three more dollars. ‘I said I would once I got change.’ ‘See? Now you can go home and come again tomorrow,’ I told her brightly.

I picked up some items inside and met her again just outside the door. A man was giving her money. ‘Yeah, they get awfully good at that,’ my daughter said, who does her ministry in the city and isn’t put out by such goings on at all. After all, it must be put in the context of a worldwide financial system which is itself a scam. ‘That’s why I love you, Dad,’ she said. ‘You never judge.’

Without the slightest encouragement on my part, she had brightly said: “Maybe you could stop by my place and take me to meetings again!” And maybe I can! Or maybe I’ll pass her story along to the aunt she mentioned, who would know the story better than anyone.

My daughter told me of an elder (an old one) who had run across a homeless man who said he was disfellowshipped. The brother went farther than most and cupped the back of the guy’s head – you never know for sure how clean they are and where they’ve been sleeping.  ‘Why don’t you come home? We’re waiting for you.’ The fellow did come home, got his act together, and is active with a congregation today.

Look, don’t try to con us. Jehovah’s Witnesses are more street-savvy than most. We work in all areas door-to-door, after all. We weren’t born yesterday. But we will make eye contact, and in the event we do give money, we will not insist upon letting go of it before you  touch it.

I'm working through it now. Will the Org. humbly acknowledge and act on the Commission's findings? Let's hope so. It's a pity that 'Satan's world' has to chastise 'Jehovah's earthly organization.' But then, if it happened in Bible times, it can happen in modern times too, right?

Jack Ryan reacted to Shiwiii in Is the Governing body still "spirit directed"?
That is a very interesting thought. I mean, how can an organization claim to be "spirit directed" and the leaders not be inspired?
Maybe the term "spirit directed" only means that the organization tries to do what they think is right and nothing more, based on their ideas and interpretation of the Bible. Not claiming any divine direction, but rather allowing their thoughts on certain topics in the Bible guide them. I'm pretty sure most JW's would agree with this statement, but there is a problem with that though. It no longer makes the wt or JWs any different than any other religion. Isn't that what most religions claim? Do others not claim to follow the Bible/God to their best ability and interpretation? Of course they do, but the real trouble comes in when any group claims to be the sole source of understanding, or the only organization with "the truth". A group cannot claim this superiority if they are not any different that any other religion in their belief of being "spirit directed".
On the other hand, I do believe that the wt thinks of itself as truly guided by God's spirit and not like the scenario above. There is a problem though and this is why the statement of not being inspired was created. This was done to brush off the failed predictions, to excuse the fact that many people have died needlessly over the whole blood/fractions of blood and the mishandling of child sexual abuse to name a few. By stating that they are not inspired they now get that "get out of jail free" card and at the same time still create absurd rules and requirements that are biblically unfounded. They hold onto their power over the jw's and at the same time try and cover themselves legally. I think this might have worked if it was the understanding from the beginning, but I'm afraid now it only looks like a cover up. It will work only to those who want to believe contradictory speech or ones too far invested to reverse (family/friends, etc.).

Jack Ryan reacted to admin in Warren Buffett’s 7 best pieces of investing advice
When Warren Buffett offers investing advice, everyone listens. The world’s greatest investor has never been shy about the strategies that have helped him amass a $72 billion net worth and grow his company, Berkshire Hathaway, into a juggernaut valued at over $212 billion.
But one thing he doesn’t do is encourage the average individual investor to try to mimic his success. The best advice he can give those investors, Buffett has said, is to do exactly the opposite. We’ve parsed through some of Buffett’s more popular insights on investing to come up with a few that apply to the average worker looking simply to invest for long-term, steady growth.
    1. The worst investment you can make over time: cash.
We always keep enough cash around so I feel very comfortable and don't worry about sleeping at night. But it's not because I like cash as an investment. Cash is a bad investment over time. But you always want to have enough so that nobody else can determine your future essentially.
    2. Invest in a broad-based index fund that tracks the S&P 500.
If you are a professional and have confidence, then I would advocate lots of concentration. For everyone else, if it’s not your game, participate in total diversification. The economy will do fine over time. Make sure you don’t buy at the wrong price or the wrong time. That’s what most people should do, buy a cheap index fund, and slowly dollar cost average into it. If you try to be just a little bit smart, spending an hour a week investing, you’re liable to be really dumb.
Recommended reading: “Common Sense on Mutual Funds: New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor” by Vanguard founder Jack Bogle. Any investor in funds should read [Bogle’s books]. They have all you need to know.
    3. Invest in yourself.
“The best investment you can make is in your own abilities. Anything you can do to develop your own abilities or business is likely to be more productive.”
    4. If you’re determined to pick stocks, don’t buy into a business you don’t understand.
[Individual investors] ought to think about what he or she understands. Let's just say they were going to put their whole family's net worth in a single business. Would that be a business they would consider? Or would they say, "Gee, I don't know enough about that business to go into it?" If so, they should go on to something else.... There are all kinds of businesses that [longtime partner and vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Charlie Munger] and I don't understand, but that doesn't cause us to stay up at night. It just means we go on to the next one, and that's what the individual investor should do.
    5. Focus on the competition as well.
[Buying stock in a company is] buying a piece of a business. If they were going to buy into a local service station or convenience store, what would they think about? They would think about the competition, the competitive position both of the industry and the specific location, the person they have running it and all that.
    6. Invest for the long haul.
“If you aren’t willing to own a stock for 10 years, don’t even think about owning it for ten minutes”
    7. The hardest part about investing: trusting yourself.
You need to divorce your mind from the crowd. The herd mentality causes all these IQ's to become paralyzed. I don't think investors are now acting more intelligently, despite the intelligence. Smart doesn't always equal rational. To be a successful investor you must divorce yourself from the fears and greed of the people around you, although it is almost impossible.

Jack Ryan got a reaction from Ann O'Maly in Royal Commission: Jehovah's Witnesses 'demonstrated a serious failure' to protect children:
The Jehovah's Witness Church in Australia failed to protect children in its care from sexual predators, a report has found.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse delivered its report into the organisation on Monday.
It stated that: "Children are not adequately protected from the risk of child sexual abuse in the Jehovah's Witness organisation and [the commission] does not believe the organisation responds adequately to allegations of child sexual abuse."
Survivors of sexual abuse within the church and senior church members appeared before a public hearing last year.
The inquiry heard the church received allegations of child sexual abuse involving more than 1000 of its members over a 60-year period but did not report a single claim to police.
In its report on the inquiry, the royal commission found that the organisation's general practice of "not reporting serious instances of child sexual abuse to police or authorities, demonstrated a serious failure on its part to provide for the safety and protection of children."
The royal commission determined that the church's response to allegations of child sexual abuse were outdated, including a rule that there must be two witnesses to an incident, which "showed a serious lack of understanding of the nature of child sexual abuse".
"It noted the rule, which the Jehovah's Witness organisation relies on, and applies inflexibly even in the context of child sexual abuse, was devised more than 2000 years ago," the report found.

Royal commission chairman Justice Peter McClellan. Photo: Jeremy Piper
The Jehovah's Witnesses approach to handling claims internally was not appropriate for children or survivors of sexual abuse, the report found.
"Survivors are offered little or no choice in how their complaint is addressed, sanctions are weak with little regard to the risk of the perpetrator re-offending."
The head of the Jehovah's Witness community's service desk, Rodney Spinks, is considering the report and is expected respond on Monday afternoon.

Jack Ryan reacted to Jack Ryan in Video released of machete-wielding JW terrorising US airport
Recently released footage shows the moment a crazed man waving a machete tried to attack passengers and security staff at a New Orleans Airport.
Richard White attacked two security guards and a number of people waiting at a security check with wasp killer, before taking out a machete and waving it in Louis Armstrong International Airport.
The recently released footage from the US Transportation Security Administration, shows White terrorising people at a security check in March last year.
White was shot three times by Lieutenant Heath Slyve after he tried to attack passengers and chased a female TSA agent.
He was shot in the face, chest and leg and later died of his injuries, reportedly refusing medical treatment because of his religious belief as a Jehovah's Witness, The Daily Mail reported.
The TSA agent was also wounded from a bullet, but the wound was not critical.
At the time of the incident witnesses described the panic and chaos at the airport in New Orleans.
"Everyone was ducking for cover," said bystander, Garret Laborde.
He described the scene as "instant chaos" with "lots of females screaming for a short period of time," The Daily Mail reported.

This has nothing to do with u/mormondocuments' leak.
An anonymous Redditor sent these to me and asked me to share.
HERE is where all of the videos are.
There are 15 videos in all.
For the most part they are just briefings on various matters in the world. The most interesting part of the videos is the comment and question time at the end. This is when the Apostles start to talk.
THIS is my favorite one. Here they get a short briefing on the potential threats that Wikileaks poses to the church. A subtext of the briefing is that Julian Assange helped Chelsea Manning in a major leak.
When it comes time for the Apostles to ask questions (about 4:30) all they care about is Manning's sexuality and whether or not Assange is gay. Oaks also mentions that there is a vast conspiracy between the media and 'Homosexual Agenda'.
    Anyway...enjoy.
EDIT: I hope everyone likes my shout out to Arrested Development in the titles of the videos...that was intentional

Wicked foes try to cause us to fear. [NEW] Though our foes ... would like us to fear]
Don’t shrink back, but let ev’ryone hear
Joyful news that the Kingdom of God is here.[NEW] Tell the news that the Kingdom of God is here]
Teach the truth yet more and more.
    3. Move ahead, move ahead, always follow through,
And improve in your skills for there’s so much work to do.
Let God’s spirit keep on motivating you.[NEW] Let the spirit of God keep on leading you]
Find the joy that is divine.
Love the people you work hard to find.
Keep returning to reach heart and mind.
And assist all good progress each day to make,[NEW] And assist them to grow and to be refined]
So the light of truth will shine.
    75 Our Reasons for Joy,
. Our reasons for joy are abundant,
    Like riches increasing in worth.
Desirable things of all nations [NEW] Those precious to God from all nations]
Are joining us in all the earth.
The joy in our heart is well-founded,
With roots reaching deep in God’s Word.
    We daily partake of its teachings;
Faith follows the things we have heard.
Our causes for joy are deep-seated,
Like embers that burn in our hearts.
Though troubles and trials beset us,
    Endurance Jehovah imparts.
I would like to see songs written in different harmonies for brothers and sisters so one song may have four harmonies but you would download the harmony that suits you.
If the songs are regrouped  and renumbered to reflect the subject would be helpful for brothers trying to decide song numbers for talks. Or just a new index listing the songs by subject would be an option.
In other news, I think we'll get some changes to names of things like overseers, ministerial servants and perhaps some places will be renamed, and some might be shocked by the change.
Perhaps in 2017 we will get another meeting change, this time Sunday meetings. If all the old outlines have been updated they might also include new things that come with those talks. For example, some talks may have videos supplied to be played during the talks. Talks may also become more interactive, involving some sort of audience participation other than just answering up. For years now, many of the talks have really been aimed at the congregation and less about the public. The new meeting may do something unheard of amongst us and open the floor to discuss issues within the community, perhaps everyone could get an outline and prepare for the audience participation part. Of course, it will be moderated sufficienty.
All existing apps provided by the organization will get massive updates. JW language app will get signed languages. JW Sign Language app will get other signed languages. JW Library will get some interesting interactive features making research fun and deep.
A few books that have needed an update like the Reasoning Book, Daniel, Ezekiel, and the Revelation book need updates. Nearly all printed production will be halted in the next few years and we will become completely digital.
A new Become Jehovah's Friend Video
3 new refinements in understanding - my guess is more on Ezekiel, Zechariah and Revelation
There will be 3 more new songs sung which will touch on these refinements.
And of course lots of experiences of trying out a new method for witnessing.
I personally am hoping for new tech or apps. What do others think?

NOTE: These are all guesses, I have no prior knowledge about what is coming. I have merely looked at previous meetings and followed a similar pattern. I think it would be fun to guess now, and compare later with what actually happens.

Jack Ryan got a reaction from Ann O'Maly in Panorama - "Suffer the little children'
The BBC television show Panorama had an episode in 2002 that featured the pedophilia problems within the Jehovah's Witness religion. They interviewed molestation survivors that went to the JW elders for help, only to be told that they did not have the required "two witnesses" that the religion demands and so were told not to call the police but to leave it "in Jehovah's hands".
They travel to America and speak to then governing body leader Ted Jaracz, who coldly tells them that the Witnesses do not "go beyond the things that are written", a quote from Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:6.
They learn that the Watchtower Organization has a secret database with over 23,000 entries containing both accused and convicted pedophiles associated with Jehovah's Witnesses.
