A man walks in the flooded St. Mark's Square during the high-water (Acqua Alta) alert in Venice yesterday. Photo: Miguel Medina/AFP

Three quarters of Venice was underwater yesterday as violent storms swept across Italy.
The first high water of the autumn hit Venice Monday and emergency sirens blared across the lagoon city yesterday as tourists were evacuated from the centre.
75% of the city centre was underwater, officials said, after high tides and stormy weather caused waters in the canal-ringed city to reach historic high levels.
Yesterday visitors were barred from an inundated St. Mark's Square and police carried children to safety as the "acqua alta" (high water) passed the 110 cm above sea level mark - at which citizens are alerted to potential danger – and then kept rising.

Today, Starbucks (+0.78%) is opening its first location in Italy—a "Reserve Roastery" in Milan—as an homage to the very country that inspired its espresso-fueled vision (and ~28,000 stores worldwide).
But this isn't your corner coffeehouse
Look back at the picture. That's what the very upscale, 25,000-square-foot Milan Roastery looks like.
Plus, it offers locally roasted coffee from 30 countries alongside freshly baked pizzas and pastries...and alcoholic drinks so you won't miss your after-work aperitivo.
There's a backstory: Starbucks Chairman Emeritus Howard Schultz first traveled to Milan in 1983...when there were only four Starbucks locations, all of them in Seattle.
Italy's cafe culture inspired him to "build a company with the same nucleus of warmth, community, and human connection," Starbucks wrote in a release literally called, "Starbucks comes to Italy: An opera verismo in seven acts." Italy worked its magic
Now, Starbucks opens a coffee shop chock full of human connection (if someone writing your name on a cup counts) every four hours on average, and it clocked in $22.4 billion in net revenue last year.
This is just its third Roastery (after Seattle and Shanghai). But Starbucks plans to open Roasteries in New York, Tokyo, and Chicago this year and next.
FWIW: The Milan Roastery might not be an easy sell for the proud Italian coffee-lover. Starbucks will charge more than 3x the going price for espresso and cappuccino in Milan (at least visitors from NYC will be used to overpaying). Already, one consumer group has filed a complaint over prices. Plus, Italians are deeply protective of their coffee culture. Good luck defending why your "grande" size is only a medium.
      So why open the Roastery?
Starbucks is trying to expand abroad as U.S. sales stagnate (and force store closures). In China, for example, Starbucks opens a new location every 15 hours.
And expanding its global footprint is as important as ever—$13 billion of Starbucks's $73 billion valuation is tied to opening stores over the next few years, per Forbes.

THE  FRANCISCO  POPE  PRAISES  GOD’S  WITNESSES  WORLDWIDE !!
Moving – Pascom Porto Feliz: Catholic Conference discusses increasing Witnesses … What drives so many people to become Jehovah’s Witnesses? This was the question asked by some clerics, as shown by the following quotations. For example, in Bologna, Italy, the ecclesiastical authorities, with the approval of the pope, held a conference to discuss ways to combat the success of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The Catholic Church raised a “cry of alarm”, the newspaper La Republica, because every year ten thousand Catholics become Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Jesuit Giuseppe De Rosa said that “the religious point of view the most dangerous are Jehovah’s Witnesses. They come fully trained, and always have the Bible in hand.”
In an article that deals specifically with Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica said:
“The first reason for the spread of this movement are the propaganda techniques [ie, in preaching]. On the one hand, the work is thorough, carried from house to house by people who are strictly trained in this work, and are deeply convinced [ …] ”
“The second reason for the success of TJs is the force of attraction of Jehovah’s message, because it can meet the needs, demands and expectations of the people of our time. First, answers the need for certainty, which is much appreciated at a time where everything is uncertain and unstable. […] Above all, it is an absolutely safe revelation of the future and, therefore, all who accepted, experience freedom from fear and anxiety and can face the future with joy, with ensuring that survive the destruction that will come the great day of God’s judgment on a wicked world, to live in eternal happiness on earth. Second, Jehovah’s message helps to overcome the concern of the individual against the woes of this world, announces that soon will end the unbearable situation of today, and soon, so there will be a new era will be born a new world in which all the wicked will be removed now triumph. […] ”
“The third reason for the success of TJs is that this movement gives its members a precise identity and strong, and is a place where they were greeted with warmth and a sense of brotherhood and solidarity.”
The Vatican document analyzed the needs of people today, and the quote above the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica showed that the message of Jehovah’s Witnesses meet those needs. This also showed Vittorio Messori Catholic writer in his recent book Scommesse sulla morte (a bet on death), who writes: “It makes us think that Jehovah’s Witnesses, is one of the religious denominations of the fastest growing in the world. It is among the religions that are practiced in many countries and perhaps […] is first in terms of fervor, zeal, activism, the ability to make proselytes. ” “And his presence, increasingly pronounced, is not limited to Christian tradition countries, but reaching the whole world, where in the name of Jehovah, and before long, they get results that are superior to those of Catholic missionaries, Protestants and Orthodox, who have worked for centuries. ”
“This stunning expansive force is incomprehensible only to those who simply do not want to admit that […] course in how to understand the Bible, Jehovah’s Witnesses meet the real needs that other theologies do not meet.” “You can not get around the issue suggesting that the growth of witnesses is because they scare people is precisely the opposite:. Unlike the churches” official “, deny the existence of hell and preach the destruction, disappearance after death to the wicked and unbelieving. This may be an unpleasant prospect, but certainly less frightening than the threat of a terrible pain for all eternity. “Yes, the God of Jehovah’s Witnesses is a loving God, and not one that terrorizes the people .
The following quote is the Catholic magazine Mondo ERRE March 1986: “It must be said that Jehovah’s Witnesses are the first to live the faith they preach: Do not IRAM, do not smoke, do not accumulate wealth, remain outside the political discussions […] pay taxes. They live a virtuous and honest life, they are happy and helpful. All this has made people appreciate the ”
I’m glad to know that they have had success in evangelizing them my family is Catholic more from small learn to admire their work in all the earth ….

"The Holy Father is aware of the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which he takes seriously".
The pope was interviewed by Eugenio Scalfari, a veteran Italian journalist and atheist who regularly muses about faith and religion, and enjoys access to the leader of the Catholic Church.
"Reconciliation is not just between government and Indigenous Peoples, it's between non-Indigenous Canadians and Indigenous Peoples as well", Trudeau said.
Pope Francis will not apologize to survivors of Canada's Indian residential schoolsfor the role the Roman Catholic church played in operating the institutions or the abuses suffered there.
Controversy surrounded the Vatican and Pope Francis after an interview was released in which the Pope allegedly claimed there was no hell and people who die without knowing Christ simply "disappear". During his private audience, Trudeau encouraged the pontiff to consider making a formal apology to residential school survivors and their families in the spirit of reconciliation.
A papal apology was one of the 94 recommendations from a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada, and the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, had also asked the pope to apologize during a visit to the Vatican previous year. But, on Tuesday, it was officially denied.
Instead, he wrote, the Pope encouraged the bishops "to continue to engage in an extensive pastoral work of reconciliation, healing and solidarity with the Indigenous peoples".
On Thursday the Holy See stated that a reported interview between Pope Francis and an Italian journalist, which claims the Pope denied the existence of hell, should not be considered an accurate depiction of Francis' words, but the author's own "reconstruction". Certain heretical offshoots of Christianity, like Jehovah's Witnesses, Christadelphians and Seventh Day Adventists adhere to the Annihilation of Souls theology, but Catholics, the Orthodox Church and most Protestant denominations reject the idea.
The commission recommended an apology similar to that offered by the Pope to Irish victims of sexual abuse in 2010.
Sen. Murray Sinclair, the former head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, said a lack of apology could interfere with the healing process. "It was like a driver of a vehicle indicating that he was sorry that somebody had been injured", he said, "but not taking responsibility for the fact that he was driving the auto that had injured" the person.
Trudeau has "done what was asked of him", Sinclair told HuffPost Canada on Wednesday, adding he doesn't expect the prime minister to ask the Pope to reconsider.
Bishop Mark Hagemoen's comments come on the heels of the president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops putting out a letter stating Pope Francis can't issue an apology for residential schools. "Before you can really heal, people have to acknowledge the truth in what happened". Nearly two-thirds of the 130 schools were run by the Catholic Church.

A quote reads: “as long as the Colosseum stands, so shall Rome; when the Colosseum falls, Rome shall fall; when Rome falls, so falls the world.” However, the Colosseum was not the arena in Rome, as other answers have pointed out - it was the name of a colossal statue of Nero known as the Colossus of Nero; the arena was called the Flavian Amphitheatre.

HANOI, VIETNAM — The JehovahÂ’s Witnesses in Hanoi, Vietnam has on Sunday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump to their Kingdom Hall.
Trump joined hundreds of congregants during the groupÂ’s Sunday Public Talk and Watchtower studies.
It is currently not known if Trump’s visit to the meetings was planned but ‘ushers’, otherwise called Attendants, were seen making front-row seat available for the president.
Speaking the press present after the meeting, Trump commended the Vietnamese government for upholding religious freedom in the country. “The status of respect for religious freedom has improved significantly compared to previous years, and I commend the government for such efforts” – Trump said.
The Constitution of Vietnam officially provides for freedom of worship, while the government has imposed a range of legislation restricting religious practices. Despite being a communist country, Vietnam is widely known for its tolerance towards other religions. However, the Government has in the past held discussions about registration and recognition with leaders of JehovahÂ’s Witnesses.
After worshiping with JehovahÂ’s Witnesses in Hanoi Sunday, Trump met with Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang to continue the dayÂ’s business.
Trump told a joint press conference, “For trade to work, all countries must play by the rules. I am encouraged that Vietnam has recently become the fastest growing export market to the United States. Mr. President, I applaud your efforts to implement economic reforms and increase Vietnam’s trade and investment in all directions. The United States is enthusiastic about reforms that promote economic prosperity for all Vietnamese citizens.”

He added, “We just had a great discussion about American goods and services coming into Vietnam. Two-way street. I am confident that American energy, agriculture, financial services, aviation, digital commerce, and defense products are able to meet all of your many commercial needs. And, in fact, not only meet them but what we do is better than anybody else.”
Speaking through a translator, Quang described his meeting with Trump as fruitful, saying, “The president’s state visit to Vietnam marks a milestone in Vietnam-U.S. relations, creating strong momentum for the substantive, effective, and stable development of the bilateral, comprehensive partnership.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will end in January 2019 a special status given to 5,300 Nicaraguan immigrants that protects them from deportation, senior Trump administration officials said on Monday.
A U.S. flag flutters over top of the skyline of New York (R) and Jersey City (L), as seen from Bayonne, New Jersey, August 6, 2011. REUTERS/Gary Hershorn
They also said the program known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, would be extended until July 2018 for about 86,000 Honduran immigrants, but added it could then be terminated.
The decision to end TPS for Nicaraguans is part of President Donald Trump’s broader efforts to tighten restrictions on immigration.Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants from across Central America live and work in the United States, but some are protected from the threat of deportation under the TPS program.
Thousands from both Nicaragua and Honduras were given the special status in 1999 after Hurricane Mitch devastated Central America. In all, TPS protects more than 300,000 people from nine countries living in the United States.
Trump’s administration was faced with a Monday deadline to announce its decision on Nicaragua and Honduras.
Critics have complained the TPS program allows participants to repeatedly extend their stays in 6-month to 18-month increments in case of a natural disaster, civil strife or other emergencies in their homelands.
In the case of Nicaragua, acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke decided the conditions caused by Hurricane Mitch “no longer exist, and thus, under the applicable statute, the current TPS designation must be terminated,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement.
The TPS for thousands of Nicaraguans was due to expire on Jan. 5, 2018, but it was delayed by 12 months “to allow for an orderly transition.”
