Absolutely. Calling the cops and waiting ten minutes isn't going to get Little Johnny back alive.

We should also be teaching kids about Stranger Danger. Not Teaching them will only allow Kidnappers an edge in kidnapping kids.

A " helicopter parent" is a parent who hovers over his or her children, ever watchful, ever close-by ... ready to guide and direct the children wherever and whenever needed, but at a manageable distance, and close enough to provide real, not imagined protection and security.

Like admin says... it may take ten minutes for police to respond, whereas I have the capability to make bad guys behave themselves (probably) faster than the speed of sound ....about 1100 feet per second.

I have been armed every day of my life, for the past  half-century or so, and have avoided at least three "incidents" just by being obviously armed ( I had to pull my gun, which is otherwise always concealed.

That gun I posted the picture of on another thread is small and light, and has a one-watt green laser on the top, ( my own modification so it works in bright sunlight ...) and still fits in my front right pocket.

I do not expect to get into gun battles ... merely restrain or stop the stupid and undisciplined.  I am never without it, except in courthouses, where it is not allowed ... and airports, and in the bath ... where it is on the adjacent toilet seat, under a towel.

If I expect a sustained fight, I "dress heavier", and differently.

Carrying an unloaded gun around is a good way to get killed .... like trying to outrun an avalanche in a snowmobile with no gas.

OF COURSE IT'S LOADED!

There are people that are sheep, and there are people that are Sheepdogs, like myself ... who have fangs and consider it my genetic duty to protect the innocent (myself included).

An incompetent defense is no defense at all .... and that's why they get eaten by wolves, and  eventually .... the sheep get sheared,  eaten by their Shepherds.

Think of me as a "helicopter gunship" Sheepdog parent.

Once you get that image in your mind ... you may need several beers.

@James Thomas Rook Jr. Thank you for a clear honest answer. I'm a bit in shock actually.

Here in the UK most of us, well i think it's most of us, don't own guns.  As for me I know I'm not mature enough to own one. With my mood swings / depression / anger it would not be sensible for me to be in possession of a loaded gun.

I love your expression :-

Think of me as a "helicopter gunship" Sheepdog parent.

Sort of funny but very serious too. Stay safe and have peace.

Everywhere around me, to about a 100 foot radius, is a safe, peaceful place.

That's how I avoid mood swings, depression and anger.

"Praise the LORD, and pass the ammunition!"

Every 40 seconds a child goes missing somewhere in the United States. There are more than 460,000 missing children each year. Of those missing children, almost 1,500 of them are kidnapped.

100% agreed. Teaching young ones about Strangers is the best thing someone should do.

Kidnappers tend to go for young girls, and kidnappers tend to have several motives.

This is why I am happy, those who have been educating on this, those who teach others on this matter, even young children to teach and speak their story, these ones are the ones who have this wisdom and their solution is to educate and teach.

We must teach our children, we are obligated to do so.

Yes. Because the only thing an abuser, a rapist, a kidnapper, a killer, etc wants is someone who is uneducated and inexperienced. Only only takes a small amount of time to talk to change the tides of battle, in this case, the battle for safety.

I am aware of all of that, Billy .... but the Perp in question knew about me, and believed my daughter.

I NEVER verbally threaten anyone.

EVER.

Once again, the mistake falls on you. I didn’t make an assumption that you had threatened anyone. In some cultures, aside from being seen as an empty threat, there are those that will take the challenge. There is also the sibling bond. When a boyfriend does something wrong to your sister, he suffers a fate worse than death.

48 minutes ago, James Thomas Rook Jr. said:

As usual, you are wrong about that.

You need to get out more.

I don't need to. I have seen enough evil for 8 million witnesses combined in a short amount of time. I have stories that would make a man cry, and a woman puke. I never lived a sheltered life. With some witnesses, this became a problem when confronted with reality.

it reminds me,

Even a proud Brit will see that the UK has equal to more offense than any other democratic nation. So, I wouldn't be too proud to think the UK is a better place to live and raise children.

That is why Piers Morgan was handed a reality check when he attempted to make his argument about gun violence in the US as opposed to the overall violence in the UK.

As had been vocal about this before. We must teach and educate our children, when it comes to things such as sex, when it comes to money, when it comes to child abuse, resolving conflicts, bullying, and a list of other things, we must also teach our children about strangers (Stranger Danger as said in America)
https://www.parents.com/parenting/better-parenting/advice/practical-ways-to-talk-to-kids-about-strangers/ https://www.babycenter.com/0_how-to-talk-to-your-child-about-interacting-with-strangers_3657124.bc https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/stranger-smarts.html http://archive.ncpc.org/topics/violent-crime-and-personal-safety/strangers.html The Bible points out to teach our children so they may be wisdom. For among many of the better solutions, education is key: https://www.openbible.info/topics/how_to_train_your_children
Also learn the statistics regarding child kidnapping, some items I will link below

In the EU, specifically the UK, you have the Grooming Gangs, which has a network in EU. Others being forced as brides and or mates, regardless of the victim's sex.

There's a lot more, but this will do.
My older post was directed to child abuse, but what is mentioned still applies, since child abuse services instruct parents and guardians to teach, we must do the same in other aspects of things such as about Strangers, be it the kidnapper is someone known or unknown:

Also another thing to note is even adults are kidnapped, primarily women, for as of recent a Florida woman who went to Costa-Rica on her 36th Birthday ended up vanishing, thus being kidnapped as some sources say, it is also noted that the driver was suspicious as well as some would say:

EDMONTON — An Alberta family allegedly kidnapped by a group of naked neighbours, who may have unknowingly drank some hallucinogenic tea, say it was a frightening experience.
And the family members say until they learn more facts about what happened, they don't know how to feel about the ordeal.
"We just don't have enough information," said one family member, who asked not to be named. "We have no answers as to whether anything was purposely taken or not purposely taken."
The family members were reluctant to share their experience because of the ongoing court case, but they told The Canadian Press they know the accused as neighbours. They are all members of the same Jehovah's Witnesses church.
When one of the female accused showed up at the family's home in Leduc County south of Edmonton on Monday morning, clothed and acting frantic, they thought there must be an emergency.
But the family said with her were four other people who were naked and the family was forced outside and into a BMW. The man was allegedly put in the trunk and his daughter and her baby in the car with the others.
While the car was being driven, the family said the man managed to jump out of the trunk. As the car slowed, the woman and her baby then managed to get away.
The man, woman and child were then picked up by a passerby in his truck, but the truck was allegedly rammed by the car.
RCMP have said that when they arrived at the scene of the crash, they took five people into custody. Three adults, a man and two women, are facing charges of kidnapping, resisting arrest and mischief and are to next appear in court Nov. 30.
Two teenage girls also in the car were released without charges.
      No one was injured.
The father of the girls, ages 13 and 15, has said his daughters and their mother were having breakfast Monday morning with another couple when they decided to have some tea recently brought back from a trip overseas. The father said the tea was from India, but the family that was allegedly kidnapped said one of the accused had travelled earlier in the year to Thailand and South Korea.
"It's absolutely crazy," said the father, who cannot be named due to a court publication ban protecting the identity of youths involved in the case.
"It's a scary thought thinking, 'Oh, let's try this tea that we purchased.' And then all sit down thinking they're just going to have a nice morning and end up in that circumstance."
He said the girls don't remember what happened.
The Mounties have not said if they're investigating whether a hallucinogenic tea motivated the alleged crime but have said drugs and/or alcohol may have played a role.

An Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) member with a P600,000 reward for his capture was arrested in Zamboanga City Thursday.
Arrested was Bads Adjam, with aliases “Pa Malod” and “Abu Jihad,” who is wanted for his involvement in the kidnapping of six Jehovah’s Witnesses members in Patikul, Sulu in 2002 and 21 foreign and local tourists in Sipadan, Malaysia, in 2000.
Police Senior Supt. Billy Tamayo, the chief of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR), identified the arrested suspect.
In his report to Police Chief Supt. Roel B. Obusan, acting director of the CIDG, Tamayo said operatives composed of the NCR-CIDG based in Region 9 and Naval Intelligence Security Group-Western Mindanao, apprehended the suspect at Sta. Maria, Zamboanga City, on Thursday.

Zamboanga City map (Photo courtesy of Google Maps)
Obusan said the arrest was made possible by virtue of a warrant of arrest with Criminal Case No. 815-3 for six counts of Kidnapping and Serious Illegal Detention with Ransom issued by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) 9th Judicial Region, Branch 4, in Parang, Sulu.
Tamayo said that aside from the kidnapping of six Jehovah’s Witnesses, the suspect was also included in Criminal Case Numbers 122473H-122493H for kidnapping and Serious Illegal Detention (21 counts) issued by the Pasig City Regional Trial Court Branch 262 for the kidnapping of 10 Malaysians, nine Europeans and two Filipino resort workers in Sipadan Island, Malaysia, in 2000.
Tamayo added that the suspect has a monetary reward of P600,000 as per Department of National Defense (DND) and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) joint order on reward number 15-2012 dated November 2012.
The suspect is presently detained at the CIDG-NCR lock-up cell for documentation and proper disposition prior to his turn over to the court concerned.
