Vargas Dixie January 9, 2018 Dixie Vargas, 68, of Roanoke, Va., lost her courageous battle with Stage 4 lung cancer on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Belle Avenue. Dixie was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Victor P. Maybe we finally have this City of Refuge thing down pat after yesterday's study article. The way the Law had it, the accidental manslayer had to flee to one of the six cities of refuge, where his case would be heard. If the 'avenger of blood' (closest relative of the deceased) killed him before he got there, he was guiltless. He might simply have lost it. Or he might figure there wouldn't have been an accident if the fellow had been more careful or not neglected safety. Virginia Lee “Jenny” Lanter Thomas, 93, passed away on January 15, 2018, in the compassionate care of the staff of Ollie’s Place in Wytheville. Jenny was preceded in death by her parents, Lemuel and Rosa Lanter; husband, Wayne Thomas; son, Gary Thomas; brother, Ford Lanter; and sister, Mary Lee Rider. She is survived by her sister, Inez James; brother and sister-in-law, Herb and Betty Lanter; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. During her final years, she was lovingly cared for by special caregivers, Melissa Bechtel and Michael Allen.
